TV and me spanning over 30 years!

I had been interested in working in TV while in high school but never thought it was anything more than just a dream. I was just a small town girl from the Midwest, not a big city girl from a metropolis! But while I was a senior in college, I got the opportunity to do an internship at the NBC news station in Minneapolis, and I loved it!

By the time I graduated high school, I had an audition video ready to send out for a potential news job. Within two weeks, I was hired to be the first female evening news anchor in Eau Claire, WI. It was a great place for me to start and get my feet wet while really learning the business. That was 1981 when a lot of cities still only had male news anchors behind the desk. So it was rather groundbreaking back then. I was there 3 years and only left to get married to Mark.

After getting married, we lived in Canada for a few years for Mark's job, and I had to take a break from working. When we moved back to the US, I landed a job right away for the shopping channel in Minneapolis, CVN, Cable Value Network, which was just getting started in 1987. I was getting back into TV, but in a very different genre than news. There was no training, so I feel rather self-taught. There was one very lovely lady on the host team, Carmela Richards, who took me under her wing and taught me so much.

I fell in love with the shopping business, but 3 years into it, QVC purchased CVN and asked me to transfer out to PA to be on QVC. Mark and I decided to give it a try, and that was in March 1990. And I have loved every moment of it!

I am so grateful that God has it in His plan for my life to be at QVC, because it has been a dream come true!

I love to shop, and I get to be a part of that day after day!  Thanks for being a part of my dream by watching QVC! I am so blessed!

Your friend,

Mary Beth Roe

Decorating for Christmas - How to Create a Stunning Entryway!

I am finally making progress in my decorating! I started with the entryway and thought I would give you a step by step. Ironically, decorating the entryway in my home is one of my favorite things for Christmas. It starts out as a perfectly nice everyday entryway…

Entryway Before...

…but ends up being really stunning. I started by using the new Bethlehem Lights garland all the way up the stairs. Then I added the beaded fruit garland on the long stretches of the green garland and used the beaded fruit teardrops where they come up to attach to the railing.

Bethlehem Lights Garland

The beaded fruit garland and teardrops are attached to the green garland with the branches of the garland itself. Put the spine of the one to the spine of the other and wrap the branches around the fruit.

Bethlehem Lights Garland

Make sure the fruit is evenly distributed from the top to the bottom. Using the teardrops at significant points gives it a nice variation as you move along the garland.

Lisa & the Garland

Garland Close Up

Then add the branches and picks to the fruit. Nestle them down in the garland and spread the branches so they look like they are all one piece.

Garland Close Up

I added extra branches at the focal points to make them more important.

Extra Branches

Then I added large ornaments underneath all the way along the garland.

Bethlehem Lights Garland

This is where I was at this point:

Burlap Ribbon Bow

I felt the focal points needed to be more dramatic, so I added some bows in the new burlap ribbon.

Burlap Ribbon Bow

After that I felt the burlap ribbon needed to be consistent throughout so I re-did the front of the garland at the bottom of the stair.

New Bow

A little extra ribbon on either side of the bows gives it flow.

Burlap Ribbon Bow

Here is the finished product once the poinsettias were added around.

Bow & Pointsettias

When you look at it in its entirety, the base is extremely dramatic and then is complimented with focal points up the stairway.

Finished!

Since it needs to look finished throughout, I made a little arrangement with glitter trees and a music box on the console in the entryway.

Finished Entryway

Now I’m going to have to come in my front door more often to enjoy how pretty it looks. It’s inspiring to get started and see progress. I can’t wait to do the rest of the house! See you Friday night for my last big Christmas décor show from 9-11pm ET.

See you soon!

It’s the most beautiful time of the year! Every year we all wait for our favorite season to arrive. It’s magical for so many reasons—cherished time with family and friends, festive holiday parties, gorgeous decorations, delicious treats, and so much more. I started decorating a little bit early this year and it definitely got me into the holiday spirit immediately!

What else makes this season magical? All the beautiful things that illuminate around us. The glow of tree lights, the sparkle of tinsel, the luster of crystal. It’s the flicker of candlelight and the splendor of a chandelier reflecting a beautiful glow. This is the season of Chandelight, and bareMinerals is bringing you a collection that helps you look lit from within with gleaming skin, twinkling eyes, and luscious lips.

Introducing Chandelight Glow, our most stunning Today’s Special Value® collection to date. This magical 8-piece kit captures the romantic splendor of radiant light with brand-new luminescent treasures for the face, eyes and lips. Whether you are going to gift this gorgeous collection or keep it for yourself, I assure you it will be the most coveted, special gift of the season. We all deserve to step into the Chandelight!

Glow On
The highlight of this collection (literally) is our latest complexion innovation, Chandelight Glow Illuminator. We’ve really outdone ourselves with this one. You won’t believe your eyes as you watch this lightweight, satin-soft creamy gel dry down to a silky illuminating powder on the skin. It imparts a natural-looking luminous glow. Apply to the cheekbone, brow bone, and even to your décolleté for an extra special sheen. This illuminator is pure radiant light, no shimmer or sparkle. It is absolutely stunning. (Tip: I love putting a little bit of this on before I put on my foundation- it gives my skin the prettiest under-glow. Love.)

Perk Up
Perk up your complexion with our brand-new Sweet Romance blush. The fresh rose tone gives the softest feminine flush to the cheeks. I love our original blushes because they look so natural and they buff on so creamy. This new shade is also the perfect partner to Chandelight Glow Illuminator.

Put a Twinkle in Your Eyes
Twinkling eyes is a guarantee with our brand-new luminescent eyecolors. Morning Glow, the perfect shimmering ivory, and Nightfall, a warm sugared cocoa shade, are two of our most decadent eyecolors. They complement each other perfectly and are so velvety smooth when applied. Buff and blend endless combinations for your most dazzling eye looks ever.

Lasting Line Eyeliner in Sure Sable gives you the richest shade to frame and line your eyes. Precise, soft, smoky…you name it, you can do it with this eyeliner.

Make Lips Luxurious
Marvelous Moxie Lipstick is like icing on the cake. It's the perfect finish. You will fall in love with the brand-new pink nude shade, Dim the Lights. I don’t know how we managed to merge the perfect neutral with the perfect pink, but we did. And every single person who has tried this on has fallen in love with it. Creamy, saturated, rich satin color. Fab.

Accessorize Glamorously
Just when you think it couldn’t get any more radiant, we made sure every piece of our Chandelight Glow collection was gleaming with champagne-gold finishes. From the soft, luxurious brushes, to the iconic bareMinerals lids, each piece looks so luxe. And then there is the evening bag. I don’t even have words to describe how gorgeous it is. You will be carrying this little clutch to every holiday party for years to come!

That is Chandelight. Step into it. And join us all day Monday, November 24 for a day filled with radiant beauty, gleaming gifts, and a lot of holiday fun.

Cheers to a beautiful season!

Alberti Decorates His Christmas Tree

When I was young, decorating the tree was something we always looked forward to!! My brother and I always wanted to help hang ornaments, and mom was very careful in guiding us.  Here are some of the tips she instilled in us right from the start.

Step 1: Know what you’re working with

Just like knowing your ingredients for baking a cake, you need to know the ingredients that are going to make your tree the centerpiece of your holiday.  So first, I lay out all of the decorations by size and color so that I can visualize the overall theme of the tree. I used some spheres my mom gave me, chandelier ornaments, a traditional set (kringle express set), and these cute Mercury glass birds.

This is the moment of inspiration for me.  I turn on my holiday tunes, and start to have fun!

Step 2: Start with the BIG picture

I place the large ornaments on the tree first. They are the ones that really “anchor” the overall look of the tree. They are also the ones that fill in any empty spaces and give your tree a luxurious look. I nestled  a set of the Snowy Owl Feather Figurines in the center of my tree this year. You don’t see them from far away, but they add a nice element of surprise when people come close and discover the owl looking out at them!!

You don’t see this little guy until you get up close to the tree! He becomes a wonderful discovery for guests and children.

Remember to space your ornaments out on the tree to cover as wide a range as possible.  Try not to hang the exact same ornaments near each other.

Step 3: Add the smaller decorations

Since Christmas is a celebration, I think the tree should have lots of ornaments – it should feel like a wonderful party!  Fill in all the spaces between the large ornaments, and let the them “mingle” with each other.  Since my Bethlehem Lights tree was 9’ tall I worked on a section at a time, but always stepped back to see the overall effect.

I love the way the stars glisten!!

I chose to hang some birds on branches and others on the decorative picks.

Tip: Decorate the tree without the lights on.  It will give you a better view of where the decorations are being placed.

Step 4: Find room for your special/heirloom pieces

We all have ornaments that hold special meaning for us, and I think its important to include them in your tree.  Last year I purchased some of the bee ornaments from Joan Rivers.  This year they have an extra special meaning for me, so I found the perfect spot on my tree for them.

Step 5: Enjoy your tree!

Nothing is more magical than sitting back on the sofa and watching your tree glisten.  I am beyond delighted at the way the tree turned out!! But - I’m still not done decorating.  I have to find the perfect topper and a Nativity.  I’m on the search this week, and will let you know once I’ve decided.

Thanks for reading!! Let me know how your holiday decorating is coming along.  Follow me on Facebook and we can continue the conversation there.

XOXO

Alberti

There is a wonderful book called “thxthxthx: Thank Goodness for Everything” by Leah Dieterich. It’s a collection of handwritten thank you notes. What’s interesting about the notes is that they are not exactly written to “people” -- they are written to the “things” that the author is grateful for every day. She wrote a Thank You note to Air, to Words, to Clean Sheets, to Burnt Toast. The book is one of my favorite gifts to give because it’s a reminder that there is always something to be grateful for, and that there is great power in a Thank You note.

I read my copy of “thxthxthx” often

Which brings me to my friend Venita whose birthday party I attended recently. It was a fun time, and I has happy to be part of the celebration. This week I received a Thank You note from Venita. Along with the handwritten note, she included clippings with her favorite words of affirmation. Like the book, her note reminded me how grateful I am for good friends, and that Thank You notes are personal touches that leave lasting impressions.

November is when we collectively take time to give thanks. How nice when every day is thanksgiving day!

Venita’s Thank You note and affirmations

Happy Thanksgiving,

Leah

Mashed Acorn Squash with Apples & How to Roast Your Turkey

Hello, foodies…

I’m in the middle of a cookbook-signing whirlwind! Yesterday, I was at QVC’s Rockville Outlet near Lancaster, PA; tonight I’m headed to The Doylestown Book Shop in Doylestown, PA; tomorrow I’ll be signing books at QVC Studio Park in West Chester, PA; and on Monday I’ll be at the QVC Outlet Store in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware!

Cookbook Signing - Lancaster, PA

There I am at last night’s signing on the phone with a fan who couldn’t make it to Lancaster. His wife, however, could. And, she stopped by to get a signed book while I chatted with her husband for a few minutes. It was fun—I just love meeting new people. If you can't make the signings today, tomorrow, or Monday, we've got one more on the books down in Virginia Beach, VA. I hope to see you there! More details for all these events are on the In the Kitchen with David page on QVC.com.

Are you getting excited for Thanksgiving? I really am—the whole holiday season is my favorite time of year. I can already smell the turkey and taste all those wonderful foods. I bet lots of you are planning your menu and grocery shopping this weekend, so let me get right to our recipe this Sunday.

Mashed Acorn Squash with Apples

That’s my Mashed Acorn Squash with Apples, which you can prepare in the NuWave oven. It’s so important not to crowd your oven during the holiday season if you want your food to cook evenly. You also can’t expect your turkey to come up to temperature if you have to keep opening and closing the door. By using the NuWave—which is essentially an awesome countertop oven—you needn’t touch your conventional oven.

Mashed Acorn Squash with Apples
Serves 4–6

This recipe is prepared with the NuWave Pro Plus 8-in-1 Digital Oven with 2-Piece Baking Set (K41625).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut in half lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 stick butter, cut into 8 pieces
  • 2 large acorn squash, cut in half lengthwise, seeds removed
  • Oil, for brushing squash
  • Salt and pepper

NuWave Oven Preparation:

  1. Place the apple halves in a bowl and toss together with the brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Place the coated-apple halves cored-side-up and any of the leftover brown sugar mixture onto the silicone baking pan. Top each apple half with a piece of butter. Place it in the bottom of the NuWave oven.
  2. Brush the flesh of the squash with oil and season with salt and pepper. Using the extender ring of the NuWave, place the squash, flesh side down, on the 4" rack and place it in the oven. Bake on high for 30 minutes. Turn the squash and apples over and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  3. Using a pot holder to hold the squash, remove the flesh with a large spoon and place it into the bowl of a food processor. Puree until smooth. Add the apples and the cooking liquid and pulse until the apples are in small pieces. Serve.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare as directed above, but place the apples and squash on two baking sheets. Roast for 45 minutes and then puree as directed.

Conventional Oven Preparation:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare as directed above, but place the apples and squash on two baking sheets. Roast for 45 minutes and then puree as directed.

Earlier I mentioned oven-roasting your turkey and wanted to show you exactly how to do that. Here’s your next installment of Turkey Talk!

If you are oven-roasting your bird, give some serious thought to cooking with countertop appliances like the NuWave or your slow cooker. Last year we created Candied Sweet Potatoes for the slow cooker and they're fantastic.

Your blog question today is more of a poll. List or no list? Have you—or will you—diligently write this week’s list of to-dos down? Or do you work better just tackling chores and the menu as you go? I’m definitely a list kind of man and will be tackling the shopping early next week. I’ll see you all this Sunday on In the Kitchen with David at Noon ET.

Keep it flavorful!
—David

National Adoption Day: Celebrating the Certitude of Family

$

I’m adopted. People always ask, “when did I know?” but I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know. My family is white and I am black, so it was pretty obvious {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} My parents adopted me when I was about 2 months old. Not because my mom couldn’t have children, I’m a middle child, but because she wanted to (and could). I always tease her and say “what happened mom? Did you wake up one day and say “I want a baby,” and go and pick me up?” My mom just laughs.

Kerstin Lindquist is an adoptive parent too, and she recently posted this quote “adoption is when a baby grows in its mommy’s heart instead of her tummy.” My mom would agree with that. My mom says a child is a child. She/he needs to be fed, clothed, bathed, taken to the doctor and the dentist, and cared for depending upon her/his individual needs. When she says that I always think of the saying “love is the process of tending,” love is a verb.

Today is National Adoption Day- a collective effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting for permanent and loving families.

I know adoption isn’t for everyone, for one reason or another, and I appreciate the honesty of those who would not adopt. But there are so many children who need a loving home, that I will forever be one who shouts from the rooftops that adoption is a wonderful thing for everyone involved. If it’s family you want, family you can have.

I don’t know exactly how my mom “picked” me, but I am forever grateful to be part of my wild, colorful, zany, loving family. Not grateful for a favor, like “lucky to be here,” but grateful for the certitude of family. And adoption is that… the certitude of family, for every adopted child.

 - Rachel

Feeling Blessed on National Adoption Day!

Adopting a child is something you do with great excitement and overwhelming fear and hesitation not knowing what lies ahead, but isn’t that true with any of our children? But the attitude with which you adopt is critical. If your overall thought is to do it for yourself and what you will get from it, you may be disappointed, because reality can be very different from imagination. However, if you adopt because you truly want to save a child from its circumstances and allow that child to come in to your heart and your home, then you’re on the right track. Ultimately, you are saving a child but receiving countless numbers of blessings along the way.

These are the two oldest boys waiting for the plane when we brought Elizabeth home. They were excited about a baby sister, but they were determined to have blue balloons!

Honestly, when we adopted our daughter, it was because we wanted to add a girl to the three boys we already had. When I think back about it, it was about us and what we wanted, but we also felt God was nudging us in that direction.

Ryan was only 3, so he didn't meet us at the airport, but Eric and Cory did!

After being an adoptive parent for about 16 years, we’ve done a 180! It’s not about us at all. It’s about what we can give this wonderful girl (young woman) of ours that she wouldn’t otherwise have had, and I’m not talking about material things. I mean unconditional love and acceptance, self-worth and self-esteem, a sense of belonging, a trust that squelches fear, a confidence that she matters, that God created her for a purpose, and He has a plan for her life.

I’ve always said that God knows exactly which kids belong in which families, and I still believe that. All we asked for was a newborn female. We received a precious girl who looks just like us and fits into our family like the missing piece of a puzzle that with her makes it complete.

We learn as much from her as she learns from us. We are better people because of what she has brought into our family. It’s not always easy. There are things in an adopted child’s DNA that you don’t understand. Especially if it is a closed adoption, you may know nothing about the birth parents, so there’s a bit of a guessing game. But like everything else in life, you work through it and walk by faith one step at a time. As we all know, the rough patches in the road bring about the best lessons learned and the biggest blessings.

Elizabeth has become such an integral part of our lives that sometimes I forget she is adopted.I feel like I gave birth to her just like I did with the boys. When I look back at the pictures of Elizabeth growing up, I can’t believe how blessed we have been, and it’s humbling to wonder why God chose us to be her family.

Her daddy, Mark, is so in love with his baby girl that he would go to the ends of the earth for her. It’s amazing how the family cord binds people together tighter than anything else.

She has a beautiful smile, long legs I never had, a giving heart for the underdogs in life and a special relationship with horses that I never imagined! Our sons love and adore her, try to protect her and always want the very best for her.

Her name, Elizabeth, is taken from Mark’s mother’s middle name and my middle name.  And it definitely didn’t take long to decide on her middle name, Grace. "Grace" is a gift from God that we don’t deserve, and that said it all!

Counting our blessings,

Mary Beth Roe

Roasted Butternut Squash and Shallots

I realize that I have become dependent on garlic when I roast my vegetables, so I thought I would try something without it. I had some things already in my refrigerator and decided to look for a recipe to put them together.

Here is what you are going to need: butternut squash, shallots, olive oil, brown sugar, salt and pepper.

Combine:

5 Shallots quartered lengthwise

2 cups of diced Butternut Squash

1 tablespoon of brown sugar

2 1/2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Mix it all up!

I used a regular baking sheet and put it in a single layer.

I put it in the oven at 475°. The recommendation was 20 minutes, but I did it for 40.

It turned out to be really good! I like the roasted shallots, I'm going to have to find more ways to use them :-) This is a perfect side dish for Thanksgiving, if you're looking for something a little different.

It is easy and yummy! Enjoy :-)

What To Wear for Turkey Day

$

What does everyone want to wear to Thanksgiving dinner…. Sweatpants or perhaps anything with an extremely elastic waistband! But since so many of us would never, I decided to put together a fashion guide for Turkey Day! Thanksgiving is the kickoff for holiday fashion, but it’s also really the last hoorah, for all of our fall favorites. This is the time to go big on the cozy sweaters, warm fall tones, and the latest trends you saw this season – plaids, fringe, and boyfriend style (just to name a few).

Here are some of my rules for picking out your Thanksgiving outfit:
1. Think stretch. Let's not set ourselves up for failure here by wearing ANYTHING we don't feel completely comfortable in. Rock your favorite pair of jeans and feel ZERO shame in spending Turkey Day in your leggings. You can always dress that look up and comfort is key.
2. Cozy and Comfy is always welcomed. Fall is all about warm colors, comfy chic sweaters and over-sized scarves. Spend Turkey day feeling the comfort of family, friends, and giving thanks to all that is comforting about fall fashion! (Remember you can always layer your comfortable basics with fashion forward pieces -- aka my favorite chambray shirt with the Joan River's hounds tooth jacket over my shoulders.)

3. Make the most of fall trends. Before the holidays roll around and you find yourself limited to glam style and formal attire, take Turkey Day as your last big outing to rock the trends of fall. This is where you can show off your plaids, boyfriend jeans and sweaters, ankle boots, and don't forget fringe!

4. Shoes -- Your footwear will all depend on where you're headed for Thanksgiving. If you know you'll be spending a lot of time in the kitchen and hosting a large dinner I say stick to flats. (My current favorites) You can never go wrong with a pair of your favorite riding boots. You'll be comfortable and get the last stretch out of your comfortable flat boots before the holiday's come around and it's all about the heel!(Isaac Mirzrahi quilted boots)

4.Mix your prints and add color -- Top off the fall fashion season by going out with a bang. Make a statement with prints & and color!

PS: If you're looking for a Thanksgiving jack pot, check out Mary Beth Roe's toGather collection that features host's home made Thanksgiving recipes, hostess gift guides, wine pairings, and more!!

How To Set The Perfect Holiday Table

$
0
0

In preparation of Thanksgiving dinner, I wanted to share a few of my simple guidelines to setting a festive table. I believe setting the table for the holidays contributes to the ambiance of the meal.

Glasses

The water/soda glasses are to the right of the plate, above the knife. The wineglass is placed to the right of the water/soda glass.

Napkins

My favorite display of the napkin is folded in quarters and placed fanned out in the wine glasses. It adds an elegant and festive tone.

Dinnerware

I prefer to set the table in advance with the dinner plate, salad plate, and bowl layered on top of each other. I love mixing patterns.

Silverware

Silverware should be set in the order it will be used from the outside in. The fork is placed on the left side of the plate. The knife is to the right of the plate with the cutting edge facing the plate. The spoon is placed to the right of the knife.

Centerpiece

I like to add a centerpiece of flowers to add beautiful color to the table.

Most importantly are the family and friends to enjoy the meal with!

Thanksgiving at my House

Thanksgiving has always been a major event in my family. Tons of food, and of course lots of friends and family. I tend to invite pretty much everyone I know, the more the merrier! Joan always opened her home to literally dozens on this day and I follow her example.

We usually take turns having the big day at my place or my sister Kathy’s house in Maryland. I am thrilled this year to be having everyone to my place in Pennsylvania (not far from QVC!), and so far we are about 14 adults and (yay!!) 6 kids. Kids mean a really fun KID’S TABLE and I will be sure to share pictures on my Facebook page soon.

Two years ago we celebrated Thanksgiving at my loft in New York City, which was a real treat. Joan pulled some strings and got VIP tickets for everyone to attend the Macy’s Day Parade that morning. It was the kind of gesture Joan was famous for. We all froze but had so much fun!

Here are some pictures from my dinner in NYC two years ago:

My NYC loft actually held 24 people seated. Wow!

I’ve never been very good at Thanksgiving themed table settings. What I usually do is go to the famous NYC wholesale flower market near my apartment and select whatever catches my eye. It’s not very traditional but I think it looks great!

My friend and colleague, Susan, with her little buddy Roscoe!

A familiar face! My good friend Lori Goldstein came with her delightful Mom.

Love these two cuties! All of these pictures were taken by their Mom, my dear friend Mishi.

Crazy fun with Roscoe, family and friends.

I thought I would share a few recipes of favorites I like to serve on this day.

I like to put out these delicious Spicy Nuts as guests are arriving with Bloody Marys or Prosecco. They are a family favorite and if we didn’t serve them, folks would not be happy! (This recipe was originally from the Silver Palate Cookbook. If you don’t know it, it’s a classic!!)

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1½ cups mixed unsalted roasted nuts
  • 1 tablespoon coarse kosher salt

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 325°F.

2. Melt the butter in a medium-size saucepan over low heat. Add the remaining ingredients except the nuts and coarse salt. Simmer over low heat for several minutes to combine flavors.

3. Add the nuts and stir until evenly coated. Spread on a baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally.

 4. Toss the nuts with the coarse salt and let cool. Store in an airtight container.

Another traditional recipe that my family really adores is Brussels Sprouts with Maple Syrup and Walnut Vinaigrette (again thank you to the Silver Palate!)

  • 4 cups Brussels sprouts
  • 4 tablespoons sherry vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon-style mustard
  • ½ cup walnut oil
  • Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Directions

1. Cut an X in the bottom of each Brussels sprout. Steam until tender but still firm.

2. Meanwhile, whisk the vinegar, maple syrup, and mustard together. Gradually whisk in the oil. Season with the nutmeg and salt and pepper to taste.

3. Toss the hot Brussels sprouts with the walnuts and vinaigrette. Serve immediately.

Joan always spent Thanksgiving morning delivering meals for her charity God’s Love We Deliver. I hope we all think of others on this day and do something, no matter how small, to help folks not as fortunate as we all are.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I will see you all soon at the Q!

George Simonton - The Designer's Designer!

I was in New York City recently and I had an amazing opportunity to visit George Simonton's studio.  Boy....was I in for a treat!  I mean, this is the designer's Designer!!!!

For starters, I had to be buzzed up to one of the most coveted 7th avenue locals.... right smack in the middle of Fashion Avenue and the garment district.  Once there, I couldn't believe the view!!! His wall of windows overlooked the exact route for the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade.  The view was electric with energy!

George was so gracious to walk me through his entire line from the MAJOR department stores.  I was almost afraid to touch as these pieces were exquisite!

Here are 2 photos to give you an idea of just how stunning the items were!

And to think he also designs exclusive pieces for you and me right here at the Q.  I could really see and feel the difference in the details.  This is where George really shines!!!!  After all he is a true designer. I could see the sketching, the fabric layout, the draping, and the fitting all coming together like a symphony.... just breathtaking.

What fun!  Can't wait to visit my friend again very soon...!!
