Diamonds and Gold

Hi everyone!  I hope that your April has been lovely so far and that you’ve made time to get outside, see the flowers that are starting to bloom, and enjoy the warmer temperatures.

After my recent trip to the Basel International Watch and Jewelry Show, Beth and I headed directly to London and Ron joined us there.  We were walking in Soho near the courtyard of the Ham Yard Hotel when we came across this striking bronze sculpture.  I just loved it and had to touch it and feel it.  It made me smile.  Created by Tony Cragg, one of Britain’s most notable sculptors, it really adds to the ambience of the area.  Whenever I walk through the streets of London, my creativity is always sparked.  The store displays are striking and many of the stores we saw on New Bond Street were filled with interesting and unique architectural details, not to mention the sensational window displays.

For dinner, we ate at one of Andre Balazs’ hot spots – The Chiltern Firehouse.  It’s was a hard reservation to get, but it was definitely worth it.  We had a delicious meal with lots of interesting flavor combinations, and the service was top notch.

As many of you know, April is Diamond Month at QVC.  I’ve always considered diamonds to be a true classic and I really wanted to be a part of this month-long event, so I’ve taken my iconic Dew Drop collection and brought it to you in 14k gold with diamonds.

Judith Ripka 2

I’m thrilled with the outcome and so happy that I’m able to debut my diamond collection with these styles.  These pieces have a look of easy elegance and will make you feel so confident and polished when you wear them.

There is something eternally timeless and rich about diamonds, especially when paired with gold.  A piece with genuine diamonds is something that you have forever.  The Dew Drop is a timeless shape that will never go out of style.  Both of these pieces are so multi-generational that you’ll pass them down to your daughter or granddaughter.

I hope that you’ll celebrate Diamond Month with me during my April show. Join me on Saturday, April 18th from 5-6pm.

With love, Judith

Life List: Go Treasure Hunting!

One of the biggest challenges in my life is finding quality time to spend with my friends. I'm sure you can relate…you get so focused on what you need to do…you end up procrastinating what you want to do! Life's short, ladies. Go out and play!

For some weekend fun, I decided to spend some time exploring a local antique store I'd been meaning to visit with my pal Wendy. The Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania is a mecca for treasure hunters like me. There are antique shops around every bend…and Brandywine View Antiques always catches my eye. It's a beautiful white Victorian, absolutely spilling antiques, crafts, and architectural salvage. My kind of place. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

I think of antiquing as treasure hunting. I love unique items with a bit of history, and you never know what you'll find when you start looking. From a tennis racket to surprise Jayne at our upcoming tennis lesson to linen sachets, jewelry, and old fashioned carriages, to interesting garden tools and oversized chairs—can you imagine the size of the table? It was so interesting to pick and poke through items I couldn't find elsewhere.

Later down the road we found a bookstore that I could get lost in for days...Baldwin's Book Barn. It's huge…a five-story trove of treasures! So many books, so little time. Of course I could not resist the 50%-off garden books...and the charm was complete with a lovely black cat, too. All bookstores should have a cat. {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Altogether, it was a wonderful, memorable afternoon with a dear friend...perhaps the best way to spend a day. Next on my life list, I think I'll take time to smell the roses.

What about you? What sort of fun are you looking forward to soon? Make some time…and always bring a buddy.

Fashionably Late is off this week, but make sure to tune in next Friday, April 24! Until then, keep checking in on Facebook (and if you haven’t already, be sure to “like” my page) for some inside scoop, style inspiration, and lots more fun!

Dear Mary Beth and Mark,

Happy anniversary from everyone here at QVC ....... especially, me!
We wish you many, many more years of love, happiness, good health and laughter together!!

Mary Beth, I have been honored to work closely with you over the last three years and it makes me happy to call you, "friend"! We have been through a lot together and have gotten to know each other extremely well.

You are a lady, a woman of faith and love, a savvy business woman, and a dedicated mother and wife. You are a true friend and a caring soul! It is no wonder your marriage with Mark has stood the test of time!

Marriage is not always easy ... living with another person is not always easy. We all have faults and quirks and life is bound to throw us some curve balls (as we know) and sometimes we strike out, but Mary Beth, you and Mark know how to go through life's ups and downs together, as a a team.
No relationship is perfect, but I know you and Mark are perfect together and perfect for each other!!

And with that, again, I/we wish you the happiest of anniversaries, especially as you are getting ready to watch your first born, Eric, enter into such a treasured bond with Alice. We are all so excited for you and we look forward to seeing pictures from the wedding!!

With love,

QVC Welcomes Tim Mendelson for the Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry Collection

It is an absolute pleasure to join the QVC family with The Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry Collection.  I have truly enjoyed my first few shows and greatly look forward to many more.  Among the reasons that I am thrilled to be here is to carry out Elizabeth’s wishes as she left me in a perfect position to do so.  One of her greatest joys in life was a love of jewelry, but not everyone realizes that it was not just for her.  From the deepest part of her heart, Elizabeth wanted to make other people happy and sharing her jewelry with was always a part of her desire.  After she passed, her personal pieces went out into the world to be worn and enjoyed by others.  Now, we are finally able to expand her vision by offering Elizabeth Taylor inspired pieces to a larger audience.  That is what Elizabeth wanted and it is what we offer here.  By doing this we are also helping people.  25% of Elizabeth’s portion of sales benefits The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in order to continue her fight for people living with HIV/AIDS.

I think that at this point it is important to introduce myself.  I had the great pleasure and extraordinary experience of having worked at Elizabeth’s side for over 20 years and now serve as a Co-Trustee for her estate. The things I saw and experienced in Elizabeth’s life were beyond compare, but the greatest part of all was being with her.  We shared wild times and quiet ones too.  Jewelry was always present.  I learned everything I know about jewelry from Elizabeth and the many amazing jewelers who became close friends to both of us.  Elizabeth always talked about how lucky she was to have such beautiful jewelry, but I feel equally lucky to have shared the experience of being around so much legendary jewelry everyday.  I helped Elizabeth curate her collection, choose which pieces to wear, clean them, and generally bask in their sparkle.

People ask me all the time how I came into Elizabeth’s life.  I had a friend in high school named Melissa Rosenberg.  Her father was Edgar Rosenberg and her mother was Joan Rivers.  One afternoon while playing in their pool, Joan called me out and asked me to come inside to speak with her and her husband.  She asked some questions about me, what I wanted to do with my life and what I was going to do for the summer.  Based on my answers she offered to speak with Nolan Miller to see if he had a job for me.  I interviewed with Nolan and he hired me on the spot.  I spent the next year and a half shopping for fabrics he used for his creations.  This was in 1984 during the height of a television show called Dynasty.  During that time, Elizabeth Taylor returned to Los Angeles after her marriage to Senator John Warner and began working in film again.  Nolan’s dream came true with an opportunity to design for the one and only Elizabeth Taylor.  I went back to college and after I graduated got an internship at a film production company.  One day, I ran into a woman I had worked with at Nolan’s.  She was excited to see me and told me she was now working for Elizabeth full-time and needed help.  Most of you may be surprised to know that working on films can be slow and boring, but I’m sure it comes as no surprise that being in Elizabeth’s life was incredibly exciting every moment of everyday.  It was more like being in the middle of a movie.  I stayed to see what would happen and here I am today.

ET2

I miss Elizabeth greatly, but it is an honor to come to QVC on her behalf, and given my history with Joan Rivers and Nolan Miller, this collaboration seems meant to be.

Thank you for taking the time to welcome me and I sincerely hope that I can make Elizabeth proud and the QVC viewer happy. Long live Elizabeth Taylor and may The Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry Collection live at QVC for a very long time.

Blessings,

Tim Mendelson

How Do You Celebrate Your Creativity?

Happy World Art Day! Since 2012, this international celebration on April 15 (Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday) has promoted the importance and value of the fine arts and creativity around the world.

As some of you know, I love to paint and draw. (I’ve shared some of my work in past blog posts.) But for a long time, I never thought I was very good. In high school, art class was really stressful because we were always given very specific assignments and charged by the instructor to create “something.” I would form an idea in my mind and get really excited about it, but I could never make it look exactly the way I envisioned on paper or canvas. It was frustrating and disappointing.

In the years since, I’ve learned that in art and creativity, there is no right or wrong. I let the piece develop freely and see where it goes. Now that I don’t have any specific demands on what I create, the process is freer and more enjoyable. I’ve been experimenting with new mediums and techniques and I’m finding it extremely relaxing and more enjoyable every time I settle down to paint. I look forward to learning more and defining my style.

I hope you enjoy some of the work I’ve posted here. I’d love to hear about some of your favorite hobbies. How do you channel your creativity?

Fashionably Late is off this week, but make sure to tune in next Friday, April 24! Until then, keep checking in on Facebook (and if you haven’t already, be sure to “like” my page) for some inside scoop, style inspiration, and lots more fun!

Blessings,

A Burst of Spring Color

Hi dolls! How is your April so far? Have you debuted your warm weather wardrobe yet? It’s finally time for light jackets, short sleeves, and open-toed shoes. Hooray!

I seriously think that New York has spring fever — the streets are filled, there are tons of people in the park, and everyone seems to be in a much better mood after our long winter. I know it makes me want to be out and about much more.

Last week, I stopped by Watch What Happens Live to see the funny and fabulous Andy Cohen. It was a great chat and we covered a lot of ground. We talked about everything and had so much fun.

While some trends come and go, one thing that is always in style is color!  And, my new TSV is literally a bold, bright, and beautiful burst of color! This delicious Dip-Dye Boyfriend Cardigan is MAJOR. Obviously, I am obsessed with florals, but I also LOVE a good dip dye. What makes this little sweater so special is that it’s true dip dye. Some dip dyes are printed, but not this one — this is the real deal, darling!

What most people don’t realize is that to get a true, high-quality dip dye, you have to follow a meticulous process so that the color graduation is just right. Each one of these cardigans went through that process, and that’s why the hues are so rich and delicious. With so many vibrant options, the ways to style this are endless. And, I’ve even made it easier — if you want a styling shortcut, get one of the Scoop Neck Sweater Tanks. I designed them so that they would perfectly coordinate with the cardigan hues, and ladies, there’s nothing wrong with taking a little styling shortcut!

If you want to dress it up, wear it over a printed dress and cinch it with a cute, little belt. Pair it with a slim pant for a flattering look that will make you look long and lean. With a classic V-neck cut, this was made for layering.

Maybe you’ve always been afraid to mix prints and patterns. Well, this is like a pattern mixing beginners’ course — Intro to Pattern Mixing. You can easily pair it with any prints that you have in your closet and, it looks so chic with florals, stripes, and polka dots.

Fill your spring calendar with fun, fabulous occasions and then, get the clothes to match. You deserve it! See you soon!

Xx Isaac

My Road Trip Playlist

There's something about Country Music that takes you straight home to Heartland. As we're getting ready to travel to Arlington for the Academy of Country Music's 50th Award Celebration, I though to myself... "Let's make a playlist." Let's pretend we're in a Ford Mustang convertible, driving the dusty roads of Texas and singing from the top of our lungs instead of nodding our heads back and forth on that 737 :-). With the launch of Q the music, here are some of my favorite road trip songs from some of Country Music's biggest names.

Miranda Lambert- Little Red Wagon

Favorite line "You can't step to this backyard swagger."

Florida Georgia Line- Cruise

Luke Bryan- That's my kind of night

Brooks and Dunn- Boot Scootin' Boogie

Carrie Underwood- Before He Cheats

Garth Brooks- I've got friends in low places

Miranda Lambert- Only Prettier

Faith Hill- Mississippi Girls

The only song we listened to in college :-)

Kenny Chesney-Summertime

Zac Brown- Chicken Fried

A Georgia boy had to make the list!

Taylor Swift- Picture Burn

Old Crow Medicine Show- Wagon Wheel

Big and a Rich- Save a Horse

Rascal Flatts- Life is a highway

Alan Jackson- It's Five O'clock Somewhere

My Tropical Vacation -- A Chance to Unplug and Unwind

Nothing recharges the batteries like a relaxing vacation. Getting away to someplace beautiful, calming and restorative can do wonders for your spirit. My recent trip to St. Lucia was just that -- a much needed “time out”. The beautiful scenery, friendly people, and laid-back atmosphere was the perfect way to unplug and unwind.

Here is a photo diary from my week of leisure...

View of the tropical bay

Lounging in the sun

Beautiful grounds of the resort

The buildings featured rich wood

Mosquito net canopy -- because it only takes one mosquito to ruin your night

The balcony wrapped around for a great view

The small beach across the bay

Me with the friendly spa attendant

The massage room was wonderful

Surrounded by ships at the marina sporting our Today's Special Value from Denim & Co.

Flowers on the island were amazing

Jose brought fresh coconut juice every day

Delicious seafood was a treat

In the dinghy for a ride around the bay

The island drink is rum, and you can try many at a "rum tasting"

The bartender, Andre, made specialty drinks with fresh island fruits and spices

A gorgeous view at night

I can't wait to go back! Have you ever been?

Leah :-)

P.S. I'll see you Saturday for AM Style, plus you can stay connected with me on Facebook and Instagram!

Let’s Celebrate Spring As Long As We Can!

Spring Bulbs have been a personal favorite of mine. Tulips, Hyacinths, Daffodils and blooming branches bring back so many memories for me. These beauties bring me to the New York Flower Market with my grandfather, Easter celebrations with my family, and like I’m 8 years old again I get so excited to see these little friends peer out on my lawn when the skies are still a wintery-grey.

Any day now we all should be enjoying spring outside our windows, but why not bring the spring blooms inside too? These clean, simple arrangements can stand on their own, or place several together for a wonderful centerpiece.

I like to mix-up the arrangements a bit; some vases are filled with river pebbles and water for stylish look and also to stabilize the bulbs. The other arrangements are simply filled with water as I do like the natural root look too.  Just remember that you want the water only at the tip of the ball (bulb) – too much water will rot the bulb.

Once the bulbs have completed their bloom cycle, remember that you can trim the stalks and any roots and plant them into your garden or landscape. This time next year, what a wonderful surprise you will have to help you welcome spring!

Remembering my Aunt Joan Marie---

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen my post a few weeks ago about my Aunt’s passing.

I wanted to take a moment to remember her and share these memories with you.

Joan Marie was giving, caring, funny & quirky.  She was ever dedicated to her family—her siblings, her parents, her daughter, her grand kids & her nieces & nephews.  She was the younger sister of my Mother & they were very close.  In fact my cousin Christy, me & my sisters grew up together—just like sisters!

As my cousin sifted through thousands of photos for the funeral, there were quite a few that made all of us go—“Wow, I remember that moment…”

{My mother & Joan Marie on Christmas morning}

{Uncle Frank, my Mother holding my sister Diane, my Dad & Aunt Joan Marie}

She was quite the foxy lady!!!  Our family shared so many memories at her home - holidays, pool parties, family reunions & Princess House demonstrations!!!!

My Aunt never cared if my sisters & I brought over one friend or 10, she loved hosting and having people use the pool.  I also think she enjoyed the company.  There were many summers when I’d host 25 or more friends at her home for pool parties!!   After she sold her home, to down size, I remember telling her that when Glen & I bought a home, if it had a pool, we would host the summer barbecues like she used to.  But now she didn’t have to worry about all the fuss, she could just come & enjoy.

Last fall Aunt Joan Marie came to my home to help me craft for a crafting blog.  She loved crafting very much—everything from crocheting, to painting, making ornaments and we even enjoyed scrapbooking together!!  She was also an avid photographer-- she loved taking photographs of all of us & the rest of the family growing up.  So many great memories!!!

One thing I will always remember about Aunt Joan Marie is how she was just so proud of all of us.  I know she missed my Mother terribly.  She would look at me & tears would well up in her eyes every time we even mentioned my Mom.  We didn’t have to speak, but we knew what each other was thinking!!  I can only hope they are laughing together in Heaven.

Joan Marie also loved QVC & Quacker Factory.  She attended every live audience show she could (my cousins husband just told me she had about 20 duck whistles in her apartment) and she also came on the 2011 Quacker Cruise.   She was a delight to everyone who knew her & she will be terribly missed.  I am very sad that she will not be at my wedding in November—well not in person anyway, in spirit.

{Christopher, Chris, Vickie, my Dad-Chuck, me, Christy & Aunt Joan Marie at the housewarming party Jeanne threw for me when I bought my first home}

I will miss you Aunt Joan Marie!!

QVC Welcomes Tiffany Kay for Scott Kay Jewelry

Hi Everyone!

It’s CRAZY how quickly time has flown by since my first QVC show back in February. Being in front of the camera was absolutely terrifying (even for a ham like myself) but I couldn’t have gotten through it without all the support from everyone. THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone for helping make February’s show the HUGE success it was.

The last few months have been a wild ride here at Scott Kay. Exciting things are coming through the pipeline, including MAJOR developments for the upcoming shows this year on QVC. I can’t wait to show you all what I’ve been working on. Hopefully by then I’ll have caught up on some much needed beauty sleep so I don’t crack your TV screens!

Thankfully, I’m starting to regain my footing and my wits after the loss of my father back in December. His never compromising attitude towards life, love and business has undoubtedly helped me through this difficult time in my life. I’m trying my hardest to channel his work ethic and joie de vivre. Nonetheless, I know he is looking down at me and laughing hysterically as I juggle the onslaught of work thrown at me on the daily! Really makes me wonder how the man did it with ease. I’m finding strength I didn’t know I had.

I’m sorry that this entry was so delayed, but I’d love for you to join me right here as I make my foray into the wonderful world of QVC. This amazing company and all you viewers have already started to feel like an extended part of my family. Check back here for the ups, the downs, and most importantly, the gorgeous jewels, that make this journey we call life, all worth it!

Never Compromise.

Backstage Pass to Beauty With Benefits

Last night marks the 3rd year of QVC’s partnership with the CEW, in presenting our Beauty with Benefits event. This is one of the biggest shows of the year and certainly one that I take deep pride in being a part of. The theme of our event is “better together,” which encompasses so many of QVC’s core missions within our community and most importantly with each other.

This year, 19 of the leading brands in beauty came together to celebrate the power of friendship and make up! I hope that you were able to join us for a wonderful evening whether it was via social media or tuning in to our LIVE show. I wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the entire event, including my day of preparation!

I was so excited for the show; I thought it called for a new dress!

Then it was off to meet Chaz Dean’s salon for a hairdo refresh.

When I need to get my skin in shape for any event, I rely on a mask. Since my skin felt dry, I first exfoliated with the Ole Hendrickson Mini Strip Peel. It left my skin smooth and glowing. Then to get more hydration, I pulled out my favorite Tatcha product.

I have been using the Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Masks for over a year now. I was so happy when we finally started carrying them on QVC . They are my little secret for when I want my skin to look firm and super hydrated. Plus they have the added bonus of really freaking out my entire family. Here I am cooking dinner before heading to work. I’m channeling my inner Michael Myers.

Then it was time to leave my Halloween look behind and head to the studio. I can’t/don’t want to imagine what sort of reaction the Tatcha mask would have received walking around QVC, haha!

Before my salon appointment, it was time to walk through the show. Rehearsals aren’t very typical around QVC as you may have noticed how very LIVE our presentations are, but because this was such a special event with a lot of added features and segments, a rehearsal was definitely necessary!

After our walk-through I was off to the salon with our stylist Russell.  I wanted to wear an up-do for the show, but because my hair is a little short my vision would have been a little tough to pull off -- BUT where there’s a will there’s a way, or at least there’s “Style-A-Do” from Hairdo!

The “Style-A-Do” looks very natural and added some volume in the appearance of length!

Not only did Russell do a fabulous job on my hair and make-up, but I’d say he also has a knack for taking selfies too! I received a couple of questions on Facebook about my makeup. It was mostly a mix of tarte and Laura Geller, including the tarte Amazonian Clay eyeliner and my lip color was Laura Geller’s, Love Me Dew Lip Crayon, in Purple Currant.

Meanwhile, back in the green room, our guests were having a social media ball! Thanks to our special supporters, Sonia Kashuk and Cindy Crawford, we were able to make this year’s event extra unique. Sonia and Cindy’s friendship so genuinely embodies the theme of last night’s event – better together. The two have supported and loved each other through difficult times, including Sonia’s diagnosis with cancer.

Because Beauty with Benefits means so much to this dynamic duo, they decided to open the larger conversation of beauty and friendship to all of you. Between 8 and 9pm Sonia & Cindy were fast and furiously typing away during QVC’s live Instagram chat – a place for fans and beauty lovers to chat and ask questions to both Cindy and Sonia. It was a beautiful moment in social media, where our vendors chimed in with positive messages and beauty tips!

Here are some more photos from the green room & social party!

(Alberti & Jessica Foust from BareMinerals)

(Maureen and Leigh from tarte)

(Chaz, Mally, Ashley, and Alberti)

Somewhere between prepping for the show, salon time, and chiming in on our Instagram chat, I realized I was missing something sort of important! Sometimes when I am excited or nervous I tend to be forgetful (I can’t be the only one, right?) So forgetful, that I forgot my shoes at home!! (I love my Skechers, but I’m not sure they complimented the dress like my other pair did!)

My poor husband had to pack up both kids into the car and drive my shoes out to the QVC studio. (If you’re reading this – THANKS AGAIN!) I was feeling a little guilty on top of the excitement and nerves, but he assured me that I would do the same for him. Then to make me feel better he texted me this picture of my girls outside the building. It made me laugh and calmed my nerves to see my “home team” was cheering me on!

Now that all shoes were accounted for it was show time! I stopped in the green room to see all of our beautiful vendors and was SO excited to see our friend Ashley was part of the party. Ashley is a cancer survivor and avid Beauty with Benefits fan that reached out to QVC (via social media) during last year’s event. Ashley shared her story and appreciation for Cancer and Careers and inevitably became part of this year’s story. I am so honored to have met Ashley and to share her strength and wisdom with all of you. Ashley – thank you so much for being you! Your positive outlook on life is contagious and we are so happy to have you in our QVC family!

Well there you have it! It was a long, exciting, and at times stressful day of preparation for an evening that was nothing short of amazing! I am so thrilled to have been able to share this amazing evening with all of you and of course with my co-host/partner in crime Alberti Popaj!

Photo Outtakes – Some of My Favorites

$

I love outtakes. I love them at the end of movies, I love them at the end of a photo shoot… I just love all things from slightly to extremely funny. While thinking of photos that I could share with you that might make you smile, I thought, “I have a PHONE-LOAD of outtakes… Why not share some of those?!”

David Venable and I have taken a lot of photos together over the years. MOST of the time (like 99.9%) we are on our game. AND, that is due to DAVID. He is just so good at what he does. He leads the charge when it comes to focus, fun, and energy. When you take a bunch of photos, of course you’re going to get some missteps. Here are 6 of my favorites:

“Lemme just stretch my face out real quick…”

“Gimme your phone! NO. Gimme that phone! NO!”

“I’m just going to snag a few bites while you’re talking. Hey, who’s that with a camera? Rats…”

Time for a quick bit of silly…

Well, here we were just in a hurry!

And, on occasion, I might just take a selfie WAY to close.

We have a BLAST and sure do love to hear that you do too. Hope you had a fun moment in your day today and don’t worry: much more silliness to come.

And yes, he is TONS of fun to work with twice a week! See you soon ~ Mary DeAngelis

Here's to More GHD's! (Good Hair Days)

Hi PM Stylers…this week, let’s talk hair. Isn’t it a bear? Wouldn’t it be great if you could freeze in time your best haircut ever, never to regrow again, so you always had the 'do' you loved?

I’ve always wanted to grow my hair out, and every time I do it just doesn’t look right. I have many moments in my early days on QVC attempting to grow it, work it, rock it, and then later ..... I look back at photos only to cringe and realize what a miss it was.

It’s a bummer trying to be something, that you just are not. :) Thought it would be fun to walk down memory lane. Let’s start with the early days of Shawn…this is me at 6 or 7, channeling Dorothy Hamill...

Then there were the teen years when I lived in Mexico City, where everything is bigger, larger than life, expressive, bc of the Latin influence (and the 1980’s thing). There’s a lot of hairspray and teasing here, and I was addicted to hair accessories like banana clips and bows.

Prom hair is always a good laugh so this is 1991…

After college I moved to NYC with my BFF Laurie who worked in Fashion. I worked as a Page for CBS making $8/hour. There was no money for fancy haircuts so this is the best I could manage…

After, I was on NBC’s The Apprentice Martha Stewart, I grew my hair out in a style that is my most favorite to date. This is one I should have frozen in time bc I’ve always loved it and never been able to get back to it…

Shortly after coming to QVC I tried the whole grow out thing. I would say this is my version of helmet head, with hair…

Special occasion hair has been interesting bc trying to fake an updo, when you have short hair and nothing to “put up", means first, back combing and attacking my hair with a comb to make it look like there is more than there is. Niece Sloane’s face says it all.

My absolute best hair buddy is my angel friend Maria from Calista Tools. She’s put me in rollers, and done this cool braid thing in my bangs one day for a QVC beauty event, I loved that one…

By the way, if you ever want a killer wig, the angled cut wig By HairDo from QVC is awesome. Check it out here and here’s me in it…

Hair has been an emotional journey for me too. I have had Alopecia twice in my life. Once in HS in my bangs, once while at QVC, on the side of my head. Mally once shared with me that she too has suffered from severe Alopecia. For me, acupuncture worked. But it is a devastating thing losing your hair for no apparent reason, with no control over it. All along, my hairdressers have been my angels. I prize great hair products and tools bc you must treat your hair with respect and care.

My favorite blow dryer that I recommend to everyone is a pick out of Italy called Parlux. I own the 3200 model. I have two and they have lasted me over 10years so the price tag was worth it. There is also an amazing new dryer on Q by GhD. I just gave it to my friend Laurie in Michigan for her Bday. And Chaz will be on Monday night's PM Style, so it’s kind of perfect to talk about hair. I live for his styling creme and I use his Cleansing Conditioner (love the Seasonals) although don’t tell him sometimes I fall off the wagon and let a little lather creep into my routine. Old habits die hard. One thing I have never forsaken is my Blonde. I think I was meant to be a blonde, God was just on holiday that day and no one gave him the memo. So every 4-8wks it's in the chair I go for foils. And the journey too has sometimes been flawed. I am sure you remember some of my blonder days when my hair nearly looked crayon yellow. I think I’ve hit my stride now though, finding the right balance. Had my highlights done just this week.

In my next life I am going to come back with long gorgeous, “air dry”, dirty blonde, perfect, Pantene-commercial hair. (And I’ll also be European. I figure why not dream big.)

What’s your hair hope????

Chicken Patty Melt Sliders & A Tour of UNC Chapel Hill!

Hello, foodies…

Chicken Patty Melt Sliders

Meet Sunday’s recipe, my Chicken Patty Melt Sliders. A few weeks ago I was feeling creative, went to the kitchen, and thought…what if I make an old-fashioned hamburger patty…with chicken. The result was something like the recipe we’re making this Sunday on In the Kitchen with David, but even better. Chef Lynn, on the ITKWD team, added a few special touches—like rye bread and an avocado spread—to make this sandwich even better than my creation. We loved the flavor the gouda added to the sandwich, but Pepper Jack, Swiss, American, or Cheddar—or a combination thereof—would taste terrific. Click to get the recipe for my Chicken Patty Melt Sliders on QVC.com…you can print it and access it along with all of my other recipes…we’re over 500 now!

Guess where I am, foodies!?

UNC Chapel Hill

Venable Hall

It's great to be back on my college campus in Chapel Hill…this building is home to UNC’s Chemistry Department. It was named for a former chemistry professor who also became president of the university…I’m very, very, very distantly related to that Venable family...the chemistry genes didn’t make it to me! Luckily, I don’t have to spend any time in Venable Hall. Instead, I’ll be host the UNC Clef Hangers spring concert tomorrow night! So yesterday and today I’ve been familiarizing myself with the campus once again.

Graham Hall UNC

This is Graham Hall and I lived in that dorm—and the same room, in fact, for all 4 years. I loved campus life and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere but on campus. It was 28 years ago next month that I graduated. UNC is the oldest public university in the country and it first opened its doors over 221 years ago. Being back on campus is almost surreal because as much as things have stayed the same, there are so many changes and new buildings. The campus didn’t get bigger, they just found grass and built buildings. It’s been amazing to walk campus…I remember names of buildings before I see the sign on the door. Suddenly I’m a student again, so excited about my future.

Mama Dip's

Jonathan and Wes are here with me and we three have been eating our way through Chapel Hill and today we visited Mama Dip's, one of my favorite restaurants now, and when I was a student here.

Mama Dip and David

Mama Dip has run the restaurant for over 40 years and treated us to a smorgasbord. We had fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, sweet potato biscuits, squash, mac and cheese, collard greens, and oh my goodness—she brought out homemade blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was out of this world. Off the hook. I took a picture of everything and I’m going to post it later tonight on Facebook!

David Bakes!

There’s never a wrong time to do some baking—okay, some days are better than others. BUT—who doesn’t want a homemade chocolate chip cookie or cupcake now and then? Here are a few of the baking essentials you’ll find in my home. Take advantage of the special offers on these.

I'm a Huge Country Music Fan!

Q is going to the American Country Music Awards this year!

I am so psyched because I’m a HUGE country music fan!!

Many of you know I’ve been singing my whole life.  In fact I was 19 when I landed my first professional gig at Opryland USA in Nashville, TN, no less.  It was awesome!!  At the time I wasn’t a huge country music fan because I was in the opera program at Indiana University.  (Don’t worry I didn’t sing country favs with an operatic flair! The show I did was an old pop classics/big band review. )

Country1

“I Hear America Singing It’s Song” (Obviously, Chaz hadn't created WEN yet!)

During my down time between shows, I would go to listen to the young country music singers on the other stages.  After the summer, I went back to school and jumped back into singing arias in Italian, German, French & English.

country2

I was always performing for my family.  I think this was at my Grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.

It wasn’t until nearly 10 years later that I discovered my love for country music.

In my late 20’s I went to NYC for a few months to audition for operas, musical theatre & dinner theatre shows.  And one of the shows I was hired for was a country music review.  It was weird because my audition song was “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady”, which is  anything, but country.  But after I finished singing, the casting director asked me if I knew any country music.  I told him I knew “When Will I Be Loved” & “Desperado”, but that I didn’t have the music. (How I knew these songs is a whole different story for another time.)  He didn’t care & told me to sing it “a cappella”.  And, I did.  He offered me the contract.  Because he knew I didn’t know much about country music, he gave me “homework”:  to listen to country radio…all the time!

Being the ever-obedient student, I tuned my car radio to the country music station as soon as I got back to Memphis, TN (where I was living at the time). I have to admit that I was having a terrible time relating to it, but forged on!  A few weeks later Tim McGraw’s “I’m an Indian Outlaw” came on the radio. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing:

They all gather 'round my teepee
Late at night tryin' to catch a peek at me
In nothin' but my buffalo briefs
I got 'em standin' in line

Cause I'm an Indian outlaw
Half Cherokee and Choctaw
My baby she's a Chippewa
She's one of a kind

Catch a peek?  Buffalo briefs?  It was some of the funniest lyrics I’d ever heard.  It made me laugh until I cried.  Once I dried my eyes & recovered from my “laugh attack”, I was hooked!  After that I listened to country music in a whole new way.  I found out the music was all about being “real”, loving life, family, heartache & fun.  And the talent…amazing!  It was that song that made me a fan for life!  So, if you ever take a ride with me, rest assured, you’ll be listening to 95.5 WXTU – Philly’s country radio station!

This is why I’m so excited that QVC is going to the ACM Awards this Sunday!!  I wish I was going; but, I’ll be with one of my fav peeps, Carolyn Pollack at 1am for an American West Jewelry show with pieces designed with the ACM’s in mind!

Hey, who do you think will takehomeEntertainer of the Year”Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Miranda LambertorFlorida Georgia Line?  (My vote:  Miranda!)
