Ready, Set, Glow!

Recently we hosted acclaimed author Jolene Hart of Eat Pretty: Nutrition For Beauty Inside and Out who came to speak at The Barn...and what eye-opening messages she shared with us! Jolene is a beauty editor turned health coach who believes we all can “look and feel our best from inside out.”

Jolene reminded us that each season offers fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs that boost our metabolisms and make our skin glow. Her book is a must for anyone who wants to take advantage of the great things fruits, vegetables, and herbs give us. There is so much helpful and applicable information – I keep referring to the key Eat Pretty concepts: wholeness, color, variety, anti-inflammation and individuality. And as spring is the season of cleansing – Jolene buoyed all of us – especially me - to get our “pretty” out.

My Café Director here at The Barn and Valley Forge Flowers, Tracy Rogusky planned the day for us and 50 guests. She prepared a delicious lunch based on Eat Pretty that included these 2 wonderful salads that Tracy created.

Power Green Salad

  • Baby kale, arugula, spinach and any of your favorite mixed spring greens (eyes, skin, liver and bone health).
  • Sliced radishes (healthy skin and nails)
  • Jarred artichokes (slimming)
  • Sliced pecans (minerals and vitamins)
  • Cucumbers (moisturized skin and calming agents)
  • Shaved cheese (optional, but Tracy knows I do love cheese, God bless her) – such as a nutty Gouda

Dress with small amount of lemon (immune booster) olive oil or your favorite vinaigrette (Tracy used Alpine Avocado Vinaigrette that we carry at The Barn)

3 Berry Salad

  • Washed and sliced strawberries(metabolism and antioxidant), blueberries (anti-aging) and raspberries (skin, hair and ant-aging)
  • Lightly drizzle of good Balsamic vinegar.  Tracy used a white balsamic with citrus.  (Use just a small amount of the balsamic – it goes a long way.  And this is encouraging too when you go to buy a good, costly vinegar.  You will surely taste the difference)

Who isn’t ready to glow?!

What a difference a GREAT night of sleep can make!

$

Of all things in life, there is nothing I can appreciate more than a good night’s rest!  Since I started working at the Q, you can imagine that sleeping has become a true LUXURY.  Every minute (actually every second) of sleep that I can get counts BIG TIME when your schedule is all over the place like mine!

Although I always thought that I was purchasing quality mattresses in the past, I have perpetually had sleep issues.  Insomnia… Check! Tossing and turning… CHECK! Restless leg, knots in my shoulder; and even as early as my twenties, the ever so common back pain… CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!  I tried everything to make my sleeping better; from pillows to mattress toppers to the “firm mattresses” that my friends and relatives suggested but NOTHING WORKED…Until I got a Sleep Number.

It’s amazing what 1 GREAT night of rest can do for you! I realized this the first time I slept in my Sleep Number!  On that very first night, I found a number that “felt good” for me (my Sleep Number setting is 50) and I experienced the following:

-  I fell asleep almost immediately

-  I didn’t toss or turn

-  I actually slept so deeply that I had DREAMS (and remembered them when I woke up!!)

And when I did wake up, I POPPED out of bed like I was ready to run a marathon! My attitude was lifted! My body felt great! I felt resilient and ready to do ANYTHING!

That was about two months ago, and I am still experiencing the same kind of results with my Sleep Number! On an average night, I still find that I love my Sleep Number set at 50.  On days when I’ve got a lot on my mind and I’m having a harder time falling asleep I set mine to 35 (ALWAYS does the trick) and on days when I feel like my body needs a little more support, I bring it up between 65 and 70.  No matter which way I choose, the best part is that my bed conforms to me….and not the other way around!

Setting up your Sleep Number is also a neat experience! Here are some photos of my set up and the final result in my bedroom.

The Sleep Number comes in multiple boxes, so I had a friend help me with carrying them up the stairs to my bedroom.  All of the boxes are labeled, so the first thing I did was set up my platform.

Next I assembled the mattress.  There are multiple layers of cushioning, comfort and dual air chambers so that you and your spouse can each set your own customized number.

When it’s all assembled, it fits perfectly into almost any standard bed frame (I used my old one) and making the bed is the same.  Here is a look at my bed all made up.

Notice the Dennis Basso throw and yes….the pillows I sleep on are My Pillows!

Even Prince Charming and Coco have their preferred numbers.  Depending on the setting I have, these two can become very cuddly!!

Remember, you can always follow me on FACEBOOK to see more pics of Prince Charming and Coco, and get the scoop on everything that’s happening at the Q!

Pick your own Sleep Number here.

XOXO,

Alberti

Luck of the Irish!

Somethings are just meant to be! My daughter had a dance convention in New Jersey.  The hotel was sold out, and we looked for another place to stay close by. There were many hotels, and we randomly chose the Embassy Suites.  So on the day we checked in, we were surprised to see Irish flags decorating the hotel, joking they knew we were coming! Imagine the surprise when sitting in the lobby was none other than Stephen Walsh!!

He was part of the Ceade Mille Failte Irish trade show, held in the hotel for the last 25 years. I had no idea!! Stephen then told us that Barbara Campbell from Inis, Eve Harbourne and her Dad from JMH jewelry, and Kieran Costello of Kilronan knitwear were also in for the weekend. Now when dancers are in a convention weekend they are busy all day, so I usually fill my time with reading, walking, and knitting. Not this weekend! Sean and I had a wonderful time catching up with our friends over breakfast and lunch. Deirdre got to meet Barbara and they bonded over their mutual love of Inis Rose fragrance.  Stephen and I sat down and brainstormed new jewelry designs for upcoming shows!

The sound of bagpipes filled the atrium of the hotel to signal the start of the show. I still could's believe my good fortune to have an unexpected weekend with my Irish friends.  One moment I will never forget is that on Sunday morning we began the day with Mass.  It was in a hotel conference room, with no windows and chairs set in rows.  However, it was one of the most joyous religious services I have ever attended, and will always remember the moment we joined hands and voices in the Lord's Prayer.  Not only did I feel lucky, I also felt blessed!!

I hope you enjoy my photos!

Pastrami on a Pretzel Roll - What's Your Favorite Deli Sandwich?

$

Hello, foodies…

If you haven’t had the chance to visit New York City, you must. The sights and sounds are reason enough, but New York is also a living, breathing melting pot with culture and tradition you can literally taste. Some of the nation’s best delis and charcuteries (which is a fancy word for delis that specialize in meat) are in New York and it's where sandwiches like Pastrami on Rye were born.

Pastrami is essentially smoked corned beef. So it’s salty, rich, tender, and obviously, smoky. In a word, delicious. Fortunately for those of us who don’t live in NYC, you can find pastrami at your supermarket deli. This weekend, go and order a pound, pick up some pretzel rolls at the bakery, and make this Sunday’s recipe…it’s our twist on a New York classic: Pastrami on a Pretzel Roll.

Pastrami on a Pretzel Roll

Pastrami on a Pretzel Roll
Serves 8

Ingredients:

Sandwich:

  • 8 pretzel rolls
  • 8 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 lb sliced pastrami

Cheddar & Ale Cheese Sauce:

  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup diced onions
  • 1/2 cup ale-style beer
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2-1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp dry mustard powder

Preparation:

  1. To prepare the cheese sauce, add the butter to a medium-size saucepan and melt over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and continue to cook for another 2 minutes while stirring. Add the beer, stock, milk, and cream and simmer until thickened. Add the cheese, salt, and pepper. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
  2. To assemble the sandwiches, cut the pretzel rolls in half. Spread 1 teaspoon of mustard on the inside of each roll. Place 2 ounces of pastrami per roll. Dip the sandwich in the cheese sauce before eating.

Do you see what we’ve done there? We’re dipping the sandwich in that cheese sauce—like a French dip. But BETTER. I just love that cheese sauce—it’s actually an existing recipe on QVC.com. We made it when we celebrated Cheeses from Around the World in 2013. I don’t think we ever imagined we’d be dipping a pastrami pretzel sandwich it in it, but I’m surrounded by some clever—and always hungry—foodies, the In the Kitchen with Davidteam. What a terrific bunch!

Guess who’s coming to QVC this Sunday?

Kevin O'Leary

That’s Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary! And he’s bringing wine he personally helped create. Kevin is a wine enthusiast and worked with Vintage Estates to bring you some unforgettable blends. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Wonderful to our QVC kitchen.

Kevin Making Wine

And because we all like to have something yummy to enjoy with a glass of wine, I thought these might get your tummy talking…

Cobbler!

Succotash

Pound Cake

Those are recipes from Sunday’s Cookbook Corner® selection…On the Road Again: Off the Eaten Path by Southern Living. This is a brand-new cookbook this month and it sold out in its debut two weeks ago. We’re fortunate to have more copies back in stock and I’ll gladly taste test those recipes for you this Sunday.

Since our recipe for Sunday is a Pastrami on a Pretzel Roll, your blog question today is what’s your favorite deli-style sandwich. Do you love a hearty Italian? Turkey and cheese? Roast beef with horseradish and Swiss? I’ll see you this Sunday at Noon ET, foodies.

Keep it flavorful!

My Trip to the ACM Awards!

Last weekend I was thrilled to be able to head down to Arlington, Texas along with our fantastic remote broadcast team, to host a QSessionsLive show with the amazing Clint Black.

My fellow show host, Courtney Cason, came along as well to do interviews and color commentary, which you will be able to see at a future date on QVC. We were there as part of the big celebration leading up to the 50th Anniversary Show of the Academy of Country Music Awards.  It was SO much fun to be there, and I met so many great folks who were there attending the festival at Globe Life Park (where the Texas Rangers play) and the two nights of outdoor concerts from country music greats. QVC had a booth at the festival during the day on Friday, which allowed folks to stop by, take some really fun photo booth "moving pictures" and grab a free download card to try out our new music download service called Q The Music, which you can try out here!

My good pal Carolyn Pollack was there and we did some serious shopping at the festival, as we are both huge fans of cowboy boots, hats, accessories and jewelry! Carolyn had a sneak peek of her new American West jewelry collection in the QVC booth as well, which you can see here.

These are amazing new pieces inspired by the ACMs and you can find them here. I wore several of the pieces for my show with Clint Black, along with a fun Denim and Company jacket, a G.I.L.I. tank top, and some Nomad cowboy boots from the Q as well!

Speaking of Clint, what a super person he is!! Not only did we have a blast during the show, (which I hope you got to see, by the way) but he was so great with everyone there, from crew to guests to fans. He may seem a little shy on camera, but he will talk your ear off and make you laugh till your sides ache! It was such a pleasure having in him on QSessions and we hope he'll be back on QVC again real soon!! What a talented guy!!

My visit to Texas was short, but packed with excitement and fun and great memories were made!

I hope we're invited back next year!!  I'm already packing my boots and practicing my two-step!!

Till then, I remain more than just a LITTLE bit country!

Your pal,

Carolyn

Meet the QVC Plus Team!

I've been dying to introduce you guys to the amazing team behind your favorite QVC Plus shows for weeks now and have been looking forward to writing this blog. However, as I sat down today, a question hit me: how do you even begin to describe the QVC Plus Team?

Off the top of one’s head - one could say the QVC Plus team is as mighty as the 85’ Chicago Bears, but with better dance moves. Or perhaps even, the A-Team of Television Production. All of this could accurately describe the crew on QVC Plus. Okay, okay – I’m exaggerating a little – but this team comes together every week to bring you several hours of fabulous LIVE Programming. All of your favorite shows on the network are brought to you by this amazing (and hard working!) team of people.

So this week, instead of “Seven for Sunday” - I’m going to highlight eight of the awesome crew members of QVC Plus.  I surveyed everybody and compiled their answers, so you’ll get to meet the team. And who knows, you might even find a #QVCPlusCrush!

Pete and Jay (Pete on the left and Jay on the right)

Pete is a Senior Director/TD and has been with QVC for 23 Years. He speaks German – which allowed him to hire and train the 4 original directors on QVC Germany  over 15 years ago. His favorite guilty pleasure song is “If It Isn’t Love” by New Edition which is a total must have on any good party playlist if you ask us!

Jay is a Technical Director/Director and will celebrate his 19th year with QVC next month. Jay is a big fan of Philadelphia sports and collects autographs from his favorite Philly athletes. He currently has 75 autographs in his basement bar!  Keeping with the Philly theme, Jay’s favorite guilty pleasure song is “Motown Philly” by Boyz II Men. A Total classic.

Ray and Jonathan (Jonathan on the left and Ray is on the right)

Jonathan is a Techical Director/Director and has been with QVC for 5 years.  When he’s not directing shows on QVC Plus, he’s a real outdoorsman.  In fact, Jonathan has thru-hiked 2,178 miles of the Appalachian Trail! Keeping him moving during that hike, was his favorite guilty pleasure song – “Come Sail Away” by Styx.

Ray is another one of our Techical Director/Directors on QVC Plus. Like Jonathan, Ray has also been with QVC for 5 years.  A real thrill seeker, Ray once rode a rollercoaster 101 times in a single day! Talk about getting your money’s worth!  Another fan of 70’s and 80’s rock, Ray’s favorite guilty pleasure song is “Separate Ways” by Journey.

Vinny (Vincent)

Vincent (known better as “Vinny”) is a Broadcast Technical Operator. He has been working with QVC for 23 years!  During those 23 years, Vincent has traveled to all of the 50 states while working with the QVC Remote production team. Not only does Vincent have an eye for a great shot, he's got a great ear for music with Eric Carmen's "Hungry Eyes" as his guilty pleasure pick!

Travis and Curt (Travis on the left, and Curt on the right)

Travis is a Studio Coordinator and has been with QVC for 10 years.  When Travis is not working hard on one of his QVC Plus shows, you can always find him with a book.  Keeping it old school, Travis much prefers to read from an actual book instead of an E-book .  When he’s not working or reading, you can find Travis listening to his guilty pleasure jam “I can’t  Drive 55” by Mr. Sammy Hagar.

Curt is a Studio Coordinator and has been working at QVC for 14 years. However, QVC  Plus is not Curt’s first brush with the glitz and glamour of stardom. Curt actually grew up down the street from Ryan Phillppe, who you may know from several motion pictures.  Curt’s guilty pleasure song is “Tubthumping” from the group Chumbawamba, and yes – we did have to do some research to verify the spelling of their name.

Bryan and Tony (Bryan on the left, and Tony on the right)

Bryan (or Bryz) is a Senior Associate Producer. He has been with QVC for 7 years.  Before his foray into television production, Bryan worked in Radio. Right out of college, he moved out to Sidney, MT (which has a whopping population of 2,100) where he worked as the midday radio personality on Eagle 93 FM.  While he’s working in Television now, his radio roots were evident with his selection of “Move This” by Technotronic as his guilty pleasure favorite.

Tony (or Zuds, as he prefers to be called) is a Senior Associate Producer and has been with QVC for 7 years.  Tony is the martial arts expert of QVC Plus as he currently is a 2nd Degree black belt in the art of Tae Kwon Do.  However, even the experts sometimes take a beating – Tony has broken 4 bones in his life, all on the right side of his body. No worries though,  he has his guilty pleasure favorite of “Gonna Make you Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”  by C+C Music Factory to keep him going.

Tori

Tori is an Associate Producer and has been with QVC for 4 years.  She is also the author of the QVC Plus blog, and feels a little ridiculous typing all of this in the 3rd person. When she is not writing the QVC Plus Blog, you can normally find Tori blasting “Two of Hearts” by Stacy Q in her car. She refuses to call this song choice a “guilty pleasure” because she feels no guilt about it whatsoever.

There you have it! The QVC Plus team! You can join them every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday for amazing live programming on QVC Plus. Also,  please stay connected to QVC Plus by emailing us at QPlus@qvc.com!

Everything's Bigger in Texas

Visiting Arlington, TX for the Academy of Country Music 50th Celebration was an incredible experience. From the time we landed in Dallas until the time we stepped on the Red Carpet, Country Music and Texans alike welcomed us with open arms.

Of course we packed so many activities into our tiny trip... As the saying goes "Everything's Bigger in Texas" and we had a big ole time.

Spending time with Clint Black was such a wonderful experience. He's a gentle, kind soul that told so many stories about country music.

We tried our best to get my hair as high as Texas but with all of the humidity we decided to go with the "full of secrets" look.

Each day was a laid back, cowboy boot kind of day.

At the end of our trip we set up shop on the ACM Red Carpet to hang out with some of Country Music Artists. What a blast! Everyone was so down to earth and had a great story to tell.

We were all sad to leave Texas and in true QVC fashion we all over packed.

Until next times Texas, we love you!!

Featuring the iconic Guardian, mixed with a patented mechanism we call the “soft-touch”, this is a piece that not only has a deep rooted meaning, but is my definition of everyday chic! I couldn’t help myself, and needed to share a sneak preview with you guys! Here’s the original sketch, but there’s been tons of modifications since then so it only gets better!! Way better!

Hope everyone is enjoying their spring as much as I’m enjoying mine!! I would love to see some pictures of everyone in the moment sporting their Scott Kay so post as many as you would like! Seeing everyone enjoying their jewelry that we create is what makes me get up in the morning and come to work every day.

Top Twenty Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me!

$

A friend of mine came to my rescue this week. I write a weekly PM Style blog for you all (well, I had to take a blog hiatus last week thanks to the stomach bug), and somehow, this week, I was stumped about what to write. As most of you know who know me, there are few times I am stumped for what to say. I could tell a twenty minute story about air. But this week, maybe it was the after effects of being sicky, I just couldn’t figure out what to write or talk about. Then my dear friend Denise challenged me with a fun and simple topic, “Why don’t you make a ‘Top 20’ list of things people don’t know about you? It’s always fun to find stuff out about people we think we know, but have no idea.” And so Denise, this one’s (er' these 20) for you!

1. I’m deathly afraid of snakes. I am not embellishing or trying to sound dramatic. I am genuinely, horrifically, terrified of snakes. I can’t watch them on TV. Can’t enter their glass enclosure at the zoo. Can’t see them in books. Once I discovered a tiny Gardener while raking, where upon I ran inside my house, stripped naked in the foyer of my home in plain view of windows and neighbors, because I was irrationally convinced that somehow the snake had gotten on me. (A second runner up fear is heights. I really can’t do them.)

2. I have two tattoos. One is a ridiculous youthful show of bravado when in my twenties and living in NYC, I wanted to do something edgy. I picked something from the picture wall at a tattoo parlor on Canal Street. The other is far more meaningful to me. It is a ladybug, and it rests over my heart. Three other girlfriends have the same tattoo. It is in memory of our friend Jen from Penn State, whose nickname was ‘Ladybug’ growing up, and who died from Kidney Cancer when she was just 29.

Jen and me on her wedding day!

3. I had my tonsils out when I was 23. It was horrible. But worth it. I haven't had Strep since.

4. I once worked at the store Anthropologie as a Fashion Stylist.

5. My Dad wanted to name me Brooke.

6. As a local news reporter, I once interviewed Hillary Clinton. I have no memory of what we talked about.

7. I grew up partially in Mexico. Ages 11-14yr. I was fluent in Spanish then, although now, it has gone a bit rusty. Before Mom and I moved there, my Dad survived the 1985 Mexico City earthquake by climbing down a 17th floor elevator shaft.

8. I once sent a sneaker to the CEO of the Oxygen Network, asking her if I was still in the “running” for a job.

9. I hate roasted red peppers, cherry filling, eggplant, and grapefruit

10. Rachael Ray and I worked together at the same local news station in Albany NY, when we were both just starting out.

11. I crack my knuckles.

12. I am an introvert and have social anxiety.

13. I don’t like to read.

14. I was bullied in middle school.

15. I studied in Geneva, Switzerland during college, and studied AIDS research at the World Health Organization. (So I can truthfully say I have actually had a Swiss bank account)

16. I had Melanoma on my toe; they cut a small part of my toe off because of it. Please pay special attention to moles on the underside of your hands and feet. Those areas don’t have melanin so moles can be a red flag.

17. I’ve always wanted to work for the Travel Channel. I love to travel, dig up cool places, share my finds, and write about awesome and silly adventures.

18. I’ve had Alopecia hair loss twice. For me, the second time, Acupuncture worked.

19. I can do a pretty good Mickey Mouse impression.

20. I have framed nude drawings of myself in my bedroom. A gift from an artist friend in Greece.

So, there u have it!

Join me Monday nights for PM Style and if you've missed anything so far, take a look here! And even tho' I'm not big on reading, pictures work, so follow me on Instagram. How about them apples?! ;)

April 16: The dust of winter settles in every corner. Open those windows, find the air purifier and air out your house. Welcome spring with open arms!

An air purifier also helps reduce the levels of pollen in your air. And, by changing the linens every week, you’re washing away germs and more allergens.

April 17: I love the clean smell you get from a fresh linen or cotton candle. It just gives the impression that your home is clean and welcoming.

Prefer the smell of citrus? Make your own natural room scents.

And don’t forget about these sachets for the linen closet.

April 18: Now that your home smells clean, let that inspire you to do a spring clean out. Find charities that accept old cell phones, clothes, toys, anything that you don't need. Animal shelters and hospitals are desperate for old towels and sheets. And Dress for Success is a local charity that supports the success and wellness of women. Look for similar organizations in your area…your church, local hospital, or community center would be great places to find those organizations.

4/19: Winter comforters, sweaters. and coats take up a lot of room. Not to mention seasonal accessories. Pack those things away in a vacuum bag...you'll save so much space.

4/20: While you’re saving space, send hubby outside to pressure wash the patio and tell him to watch this video before he goes.

4/21: Need help organizing those garden supplies? I use the Creative Outdoor All-Terrain Folding Wagon.

4/24: The fireplace and mantel is the centerpiece of your room and where your eye is drawn. If you only add elements of spring to that one area, it's enough.

Southern-Style Rib Sandwich - What Was Your Favorite Sandwich in April?

Hello, foodies…

This Wednesday we’re bringing you our final recipe for the month of April. (How is that possible? Anyone? Anyone??) Anyway, it’s our last reinvented classic sandwich and we saved a goodie for last. Here’s my Southern-Style Rib Sandwich.

Southern-Style Rib Sandwich
Serves 4–5

This recipe is prepared with the Corky's BBQ 4-lb or 8-lb BBQ Baby Back Rib Racks (M47197).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tbsp whole grain mustard
  • 4 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 3/4 cup shredded red cabbage
  • 3/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 7 sprigs scallions, thinly sliced
  • 1 rack Corky's BBQ Baby Back Ribs
  • 4–5 hoagie rolls

Preparation:

  1. Combine the mustard, vinegar, honey, pepper, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add both cabbages, carrots, and the scallions and toss until completely coated. Place the slaw into an airtight container and refrigerate until needed.
  2. Cook the ribs according to the package instructions. When the ribs are cool enough to handle, cut each rib individually and pull out the bone. Be sure to save any extra sauce.
  3. Cut the rolls nearly in half. Divide the rib meat between the hoagies and pour any extra sauce on top of the rib meat. Place about 3/4 cup of the slaw on top of each hoagie and serve.

Southern-Style Rib Sandwich

This is the kind of sandwich I grew up on, foodies, and I can’t wait to hear what you think. We used a vinegar-mustard blend in the coleslaw because North Carolina prefers vinegar in their barbecue and condiments. If you prefer a classic mayonnaise dressing, I have a Sweet & Salty Slaw Dressing right on QVC.com. We used it for our Cabbage, Kale, & Broccoli Slaw, but it would taste terrific on coleslaw, too.

I’m going to ask you to play favorites today and tell me what sandwich you liked best this month. Was it the Reuben Wrap? Open-Faced Pot Roast Sandwich? Chocolate PB&B?All my recipes are grouped on my recipe page, so you can remember them all. We love to know how we’re doing, so thanks, in advance, for your feedback. I’ll see you this Wednesday night at 8pm ET.

Keep it flavorful!
—David

P.S. LOTS of you have been asking for a Keurig personal brewer with K-Cups and My K-Cup and we’ve got the K10 this Wednesday with 30 K-Cup Packs, My K-Cup AND the Carousel for under $80! Even better, it’s on 4 Easy Pays. Don’t miss this Keurig if you’ve been holding out for that perfect one. It’s here!

Gadget Girl Meets Transformer Book

This gadget girl got super excited at the opportunity to test drive the new Asus Transformer Book! Technology has gotten to the point where it makes life so convenient. Now, we as consumers have the opportunity to decide amongst a virtual buffet of products to fit our every connected need.

Think of the transformer book as half laptop and half tablet. That's really what it is as the 11.6" screen can separate from the keyboard to give you a stand alone tablet experience. I have to say I was in love with the versatility.

Also, the fact that it is super lightweight - only 3.6 pounds!! makes it ultra-portable.

Can you believe it fit in the side pocket of my purse?

With Windows 8 I was able to easily breeze through all of my tasks at work. Plus, I have to say I felt pretty cool carrying it around for all of my meetings with ease.

Make no mistake this Asus transformer book is a powerhouse with Intel processing. Anything and everything you would expect with a laptop or desktop computing experience in a much, much smaller portable size. The only thing you'll have to give up is your optical drive. If you're okay with that, this is a great option for ultra portability and lightweight computing.

We are so blessed to live in an age of technology that allows us to make the whole world our office - and this Asus Transformer is a perfect way to do it - at a great event price and 6 Easy Pays!

I hope this was helpful. So,  until next time I get to test drive some new and innovative electronics item .... Gadget girl - signing off!  {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

P.S.  The Glam girl in me loved the unexpected navy blue color too!

Scott Brothers' Home Style Advice

A few weeks ago, Shawn Killinger asked fans to submit pictures of the areas of their homes that they needed help updating. Drew and Jonathan Scott are here to respond to 5 photographs and give their tips for these spaces!

living room

It's important to let in natural light- it'll help any space feel brighter and bigger. A white sheer or shade that can diffuse light but not block it is best for your windows. It's also great to have some elegant or traditional pieces incorporated but be careful not to over do it. Here, we see too many different styles forced together and they're all fighting for attention! It's kinda like when brothers compete haha. Instead, create a focal point like a feature wall and have the rest of the room complement it. A fireplace is typically a nice feature so don't hide it with that chair!

living room

Less is more. If this wall is where your TV has to stay, focus on bringing balance and symmetry to this wall so that it doesn't look so cluttered.
Put away the toys! Consider a coffee table or ottoman that doubles as storage so you can tuck away toys but have them easily accessible. Your window panels shouldn't fully block the windows so consider faux wood blinds (cost effective) and leave the panels as decor to the side of your window. If you really want wow factor consider adding an electric fireplace and wall-mount your TV above it. Electric units these days can look exactly like the real thing. Be sure to build it into the wall and even add a beautiful tile surround for added value.

Curb appeal: You need some wow factor for your home! Painting your front door and garage doors a slightly bolder color can make the curb appeal pop. Even a darker tone in the same color palette is nice if your trim is white or black! Consider continuing your garden the length of your driveway to help create an inviting entry! You NEED some color in your life!! Flowers, shrubs and even some path lighting could give you the dramatic front scape you need. Check out our Scott Living collection at QVC.comfor some furniture and decor that'll help your outdoor space shine.

Staircase in a home

Defining a space: Throwing two chairs in a room doesn't exactly define a space. Is this a living room? A dining room? Especially when selling, it's important to establish what the function of the space will be so potential buyers can easily imagine themselves in that space. It's okay to use an area rug on carpet as it can help add color of pattern to a room. If it's in the budget, there's nothing better than flowing hardwood through your main floor! The blue and red paint is fairly dark so I would recommend using a little color like a soft gray..and punch up the color and personality in your artwork and decor.
If this happens to be your front entry you could also create separation with some freestanding open shelves for storage that sit below counter height.

a fan's kitchen

Fresh and New: You've fallen into the beige and brown trap! This kitchen feels tired. If you don't have a huge budget to renovate your kitchen, that's fine. Spend money where it counts here: Cabinets, lighting and walls. Simply painting the cabinets white will make this kitchen feel fresh and newer. Along with a lighter tone on the walls the space will actually feel twice the size. Lighting is crucial in any small area. Replace that fixture with recessed lights or at least a newer fixer that can offer some better disbursement of light. If your budget is a little higher, consider new hardware, fixtures, counters and floors. Plus, a backsplash is not only functional but it can be that feature in your kitchen that everyone talks about.

Greetings,

I hope this finds you and your loved ones happy & healthy.  I’ve had a very busy month since we last saw each other.  This past Easter, we celebrated the Baptism of my daughter Olive along with 3 of her cousins during the Easter Vigil.  I felt so blessed to have so many friends & family come together to celebrate such a wonderful occasion.

(olive pic) jaiphotoolive

Looking down from the pulpit at the faces of the congregation full of my family and friends made me think of all the amazing people who I have met throughout my years in both my personal & professional life.  As I get ready to share with you an hour of beautiful new JAI designs and all the stories of discovery that inspired them, I wanted to introduce some of the people that touched my heart and helped influence the love and passion that went into creating our JAI designs.

jaione

In the Northern Jungles of Thailand close to the border of Burma, I came across some local women who were transporting grass that they harvested and would later weave into brooms to sell at the local market.

jaitwo

When I entered the Akha village of the Hill Tribes in the jungles of Thailand I was greeted by this woman.  It is customary that when a guest enters the village they are greeted and they receive a woven wool bracelet so that the rest of the village knows that they have been welcomed.  The women make all their jewelry including their beautiful head-dresses.  The teeth appear to be black as it is a sign of beauty.  The coloring comes from a fruit that looks like an orange as without it their teeth are actually bright white.

jaithreephoto

I had the pleasure of spending the day with some of the most exceptional wood carvers on the outskirts of Bangkok.  Here I met a father and son whose family have been woodcarvers for as long as they could remember.  It was very sweet how proud the father was to introduce me to his son who he said would continue the long legacy of the family’s name in woodcarving.  It reminded me of my dad and younger brother who are both in construction and real estate and the pride my father exudes when telling his peers of my brother’s accomplishments.

During one trip I arrived in a local village as they were preparing for a holiday celebration.  I met a group of women who were making floral headdresses to be worn during the holiday ceremonies.  They worked mainly with lotus flowers & marigolds.  It reminded me of my mom before holidays as she would decorate the home with seasonal flowers and create the different floral arrangements.

One of my favorite places to visit while in Thailand is a local orphanage in Chiang Mai.  It was years ago that I first visited this orphanage and now it’s become one of the highlights to every inspiration trip I take.  I always find a way to return and spend a day with these wonderful children and now have the pleasure of sponsoring 3 of the children’s education & living expenses.

My entire team have fallen in love with the kids from the orphanage.  This is Jen from our marketing department with 2 of the children that she sponsors.

Here are some of the children playing around after we celebrated Jen’s birthday at the orphanage with cake for all the kids.  They were on a little sugar rush as you can see.

I love this photo.  I met this woman in a very small village in the jungles of Thailand.  I don’t think she knew that I didn’t speak her village’s dialect because she kept talking and talking, and I kept smiling and smiling.. you know, the international language.. just smile.

jainine

This is a little girl who is part of the ‘Long neck’ hill tribe.  She had just got out of school, (which is a one room building), and was having a bag of chips as she waited for her older brother.  She said they were headed home to do chores before their parents came home from the hills where they were farmers.

This was a highlight of one of our trips to the islands off of Phuket.  We spent the day diving and exploring some of the most beautiful islands in the world.  (New collection coming soon from this trip) Afterwards, our guide pulled our boat up to this small island. So small that it only takes 10 minutes to walk clear across the island.  In the middle of the island was this little free standing make-shift restaurant.  Here Jen is pictured with the bartender who made our fresh pineapple drinks who was also studying to be a silver smith.  He showed us with great pride all the rings he was wearing as he had made them himself.  We ended up giving him one of our tigers eye Croco beaded bracelets, which he loved.

jaieleven

We visited a distant island of Sea Gypsies who are a group of Nomadic tribes people who worship the ocean.  Less than 400 people inhabit the island.  I spent the day learning all about these mystical people and learned how this small island of sea gypsies survived the great Tsunami without losing any lives.  This little girl pictured here on the porch of her home had taken candy wrappers and made them into bracelets.  You know I had to buy these for my nieces and nephews at home.  This little entrepreneur reminded me of when my brothers and I would make lemonade and pull it around in our wagon to all the construction sites in our neighborhood when we were little to make money to buy candy at our local mini-mart.  She was saving money to buy a doll that she wanted.

twelve

I met a sea gypsy woman who was born and raised on this little island in the Andaman Sea.  She has never left its shore during her 80 years of life.  When I asked her if she ever thought what the rest of the world was like, she said; ‘this is the only world she knows and she loves it.’  She never gave concern to a world that she knew she would never see.

These are just a couple of the people I have met while exploring South East Asia during my inspirational trips.  Although I come from thousands of miles away and do not speak the language or completely

understand their culture and traditions, I have learned so much about the love and beauty that lives in each of us.  I’ve been educated, enlightened, and inspired through my travels which have helped me create works of wearable art that I hope you love.

Please join me this Thursday, April 30th at 6pm ET as I bring more of these inspirations to life in our new JAI designs.  If you would like to experience more of my travels and the world of JAI, please join me on our JAI Jewelry for QVC Facebook page and our JAIjewelry_ Instagram account for more behind the scenes images and stories of my travels.
