My Mom

I imagine you feel the same way I do, even though you are a Mom, Mother’s day is still about your Mom! And even though I haven’t celebrated with my Mom in over 20 years, the day is still about her. She was, to quote a favorite line from a prayer, “my light my sweetness and my hope.”  As David Venable often says (even though she was in heaven before I met David) “A very wise woman once said….” And then will quote my Mom. She was born in Mahanoy City in the “coal regions” of upstate Pennsylvania, the youngest of four daughters.  She and all of her sisters graduated from Immaculata College in the late 1930’s and 40’s, quite unusual in those days. She often thought she had a vocation to the religious life like her two sisters, until Sylvester Rudolph came into her life and the rest is history!

But how she loved children and loved being a Mom! I am the youngest of five but she really wanted nine!!  She had the uncanny ability to say the right thing no matter what was going wrong in my life.  I always think that a cup of tea with Mom would pretty much cure anything. She passed away much too soon for such a vibrant, wonderful woman when I was in my late 20’s, but thanks to her stories and her impact I feel  she lives on today and you know her too.

Two of her sisters entered the religious order, Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known as the IHM’s.  I was visiting my Aunt Theresa many years ago (who just passed away at 96), and I was sad that when I would have children my Mom wouldn’t know. She looked at me with a smile and said, “Janie your Mom will know you are going to have a baby before you do!”  And she was so right; my girls will often comment that they miss Grammy, so her spirit is alive with them. I was so proud when I was interviewed for the book “Wise Irish Women” and I was able to tell her story of wisdom and love.  But she was hysterically funny too, a woman of many facets.  Here is a favorite photo from my wedding, when we greeted each other after the ceremony. That’s a picture of love.

I recently went to a Mother/Daughter Communion Breakfast, and another awesome IHM Sister spoke about the bond of Mother and child.  She told us “From the moment you were conceived, only two people knew about your life, God and your Mother. Their love for you is powerful and never ending.”  How true that is.

Happy Mother’s Day!

A Visit from my BFF, Makeovers, my Beauty Obsession and PM Style this Week!

Happy Monday!  I was so sad to see this weekend come to an end because I finally had my first BFF visit after almost 3 years of living in Pennsylvania! Meet Liz… we’ve been friends since our freshman year of college (almost 10 years, yikes!), when we would commute back and forth to see our boyfriends who lived back in Georgia.  She was the one friend that everyone was always envious of;  Extremely beautiful, sweet, and never missed out on anything yet maintained a 4.0 all of college.

Here are a couple of photos to catch you up…

Here’s a photo of us at a horse race called Steeplechase

The night before her wedding, Oct 2012

Liz and her hubby, Tyler over Easter 2013.

I don’t think anyone loves the fact that I work for QVC more than Liz.  Between the conversations of beauty products and handbags, QVC always comes up.  This week I wanted her to be treated like she was spending the week at a Beauty Spa and for that, she is the topic of my BEAUTY OBSESSION.  Take a look.

Here is Liz’s Before and After using IT Cosmetics Tightline Full Lash Black Mascara Duo

Here is Liz’s story, direct from her…  “I wish my lashes were longer and thicker.  With other primers that I have tried, they are white.  Sometimes I can’t cover the entire lash with the mascara and the white primer will show which makes my lashes look gray (and that’s not a look I’m going for! Ha!).  True story, I’ve been in a hurry before and gone to work with only the white primer on.  I’m not proud to say this but it’s happened twice.  My coworker Amanda didn’t know how to approach me the first time it happened.  Was I sick? Did I burn my lashes?  Now that I explained what happened, she is always on the lookout for me and my potential ‘no-no primer’.  I love that this wand is one of the smallest I’ve ever seen.  You can get close to the root and it doesn’t clump.”

Here’s why I am obsessed with this product… if you’re someone who loves the look of big lashes … this creates a full line of lashes because it has the eyeliner built in.  Because the brush is so small… you can get close to the root without getting too close to your eye.  I also love this because I have light lashes… you can get the look of beautiful lashes without the look of a heavy mascara.  What are your thoughts on this brand new product? If you can’t tell, we are in L-O-V-E.

Here’s a look at Liz with Kate Sommerville Exfoli-Kate on. I love that it doesn’t look like she has a treatment on.  I finished off her newly exfoliated skin with some of my favorite Dr. Gross Glow Pads

I hope you have a wonderful start to your week, and I will leave you with a sneak peak of something BIG that’s going to be available from Susan Graver next week.  Check out these beautiful Summer Must-Haves.

What Have You Been Grilling Lately? Steak? Pineapple? Chicken?

Hello, foodies…

We’re halfway through grilling month already! Can you believe it!? So far we’ve marinated steak, we’ve grilled yuca, and thrown fresh scallops on the barbecue. But, we’ve got a lot more recipes to cover with ingredients like steaks, burgers, and chicken. So first things first: steaks and burgers. How do you get great-tasting, perfectly prepared red meat?

So what would be a great appetizer or side for your burgers or steak? Grilled Summer Veggie Bruschetta.

Grilled Summer Veggie Bruschetta

Grilled Summer Veggie Bruschetta

This recipe is prepared with the Ninja 1200 Watt Mega Kitchen System (K38794).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

Marinade:
6 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
2 tsp Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
Pinch of garlic powder
Pinch of onion powder
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 tsp kosher salt

Vegetables:
1/4 lb eggplant, peeled and sliced into 1/2" slices
1 zucchini or summer squash, ends removed and halved lengthwise
1 red pepper, stemmed, seeds removed, and quartered
3 medium mushrooms
1/2 medium red onion, peeled and cut in 3 wedges
1 medium tomato, stemmed and cut into 4 wedges
1/2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1/4 tsp minced garlic
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
1/8 tsp ground black pepper
1/8 tsp kosher salt

Bruschetta:
1 baguette, sliced into about 25 1/2" slices
3–4 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
8 oz goat cheese, room temperature

Directions:

To marinate the vegetables, whisk the ingredients in a small mixing bowl until well-combined. Place the eggplant, squash, pepper, mushrooms, and onion into a plastic zip-top bag. (Do not add the tomato—you won't be grilling it.) Pour the prepared marinade into the bag, tightly seal, and shake to distribute the marinade. Marinate for 15 minutes.

To grill the veggies, preheat the grill to medium. Remove the vegetables from marinade and place them directly onto the grill grates. Grill for 4–5 minutes per side, or until the vegetables begin to soften. Set aside.

Let the vegetables cool to room temperature. Cut the squash into four pieces and place the pieces into the bowl of a food processor along with the tomato, the grilled veggies, balsamic vinegar, garlic, basil, pepper, and salt. Pulse until the veggies are finely chopped and the mixture is well-combined.

To grill the bruschetta, preheat the grill over medium heat. Brush each side of the bruschetta slices generously with olive oil. Grill the slices for 5 minutes on each side, or until nicely toasted. When the bread has cooled slightly, spread about a tablespoon of the goat cheese on each slice. Top the cheese with a generous tablespoon of the vegetable mixture. Serve immediately.

Now that you’re on Instagram, please post some pictures of what you’re grilling this month! In the meantime, for today’s blog question, tell me what you’ve already grilled this season. Have you made burgers? Chicken? Grilled Pineapple? I’ll see you Wednesday night at 8pm ET. We have a very special guest…Daphne Oz! Daphne is a co-host on The Chew and she’s coming with Relish, a unique book that she calls an adventure in food, style, and everyday fun. If you’re seeking practical advice for happy, healthy eating and delicious living, Daphne’s book is for you.

Keep it flavorful!

P.S. Hey, Memphis foodies! I’ll be at Corky’s Ribs & Barbecue (5249 Poplar Ave) this Thursday night from 7-9. The company is debuting a brand-new barbecue sauce and it’s the recipe from my cookbook. (It accompanies the North Carolina Pulled Pork!) I’m truly flattered…this is the first time Corky’s has ever used an outsider’s recipe on their award-winning barbecue. Come on by and try it!

A belated Happy Mother's Day to all !! We had a lovely weekend here in eastern PA for Mother's Day this year, and as I wandered about my garden (mainly pulling any sneaky weeds who dared to appear after the rainstorm the day before), I noticed how many roses are already blooming!! I'm not sure if it's because I waited till a bit later to prune them this year, or because of the Cottage Farms Rose Booster (which they love), but they have already had a huge growth spurt this Spring and it's not even June yet! I went and grabbed my camera to share a few photos with you here in today's blog posting.

I'm thrilled to have some roses out already, even before the peonies, and just as the dogwood and pear tree blooms are turning to green leaves. The lilacs are adding an incredible fragrance to my garden pathways as well and are so lovely in shades ranging from white to lavendar to rich purple.

As always, at this time of the year, I am reminded, a bit sadly, that as my garden begins to show signs changing from Spring to early Summer, it means we are nearing the end of Gardening Season at QVC for another year. Next week, will be the Finale of Garden Party with Carolyn for the season, on Tuesday, May 21st at 9am. We will have a great mix of products to wrap up the season for both your patio AND garden ! We'll feature items that will make your OWN garden parties and get togethers the BEST ever, all summer long! You'll still have time to get it there by the end of May....AND we'll also have some great ideas for Father's Day as well. :)

A quick reminder that all of our LIVE PLANTS are now offically LAST CHANCE onQVC.com. You will not find any live plants on our website after the end of MAY, so if you are still in need of some beautiful flowers and plants for your garden, with plenty of time to grow this season, be sure and check out the Last Chance offers on Live Plants from Roberta's, Cottage Farms and Gardens Alive on our website! I just discovered some beautiful rose shrubs in lots of different colors from Gardens Alive, which I promptly ordered, to plant around the sides of my garden shed. Yes, I can always find a spot for MORE ROSES!!

Also, don't forget to click here to see THIS week's latest video blog with another wonderful gardening tip from my buddy Phillip Watson of Cottage Farms.

Phillip has already been busy designing gardens for some of his Connecticut clients the past couple  of weeks...but you can see and hear his gardening tips as often as you like, here within my garden blogs, as well as the earlier tips from Eric Wallien of Roberta's. Just scroll through my various garden blogs from this season to find all the video tips.

So, I'll look forward to having you join me for my final two Garden Party shows of the season, Tuesday, May 14th at 9am and the finale on Tuesday, May 21st, also at 9am!

And don't forget our Last Chance Plants on qvc.com, along with many tools and other gardening favorites on my Garden Party page, which will be available to you throughout the season for items you may have missed.

Meanwhile.....don't forget to stop and smell the roses in YOUR garden....or the lilacs, or the lilies, or the fragrant day lilies!! They will all make your day more enjoyable!! Please POST your OWN garden photos on my Facebook page, Carolyn Gracie QVC, now that your flowers and plants are growing!! We would all love to see how each other's gardens are turning out!!

Waving to you from behind the rose hedge -

Carolyn

Our employees at our Founder's Park location in West Chester, PA, were watching a goose for a month sit on her eggs and block their access to their outside eating area.  Well, just in time for Mother's Day, the eggs hatched!! We thought this was such a cute story of a mother's love so we decided to share the photos.

Pics around the building warning Q employees of the locations

The area was roped off with yellow security tape, plus the male was on the roof watching.  Talk about protected!

View from within the building

The eggs are hatched! We know it's a little hard to see the goslings but we couldn't get any closer.  She was protecting her babies!

We hope you enjoyed our little story and had a wonderful Mother's Day!

How to Get Your Skin Ready for Summer

$

Hello friends,

I'm so excited to start my blog here on QVC.com! As a skin-care expert, I can’t wait to share my tips and tricks with you. I began treating skin at my spa in Beverly Hills in 1975. Since then, it has become a destination for Hollywood celebrities. My clients went crazy for my formulations and began asking for products that they could take home with them. That’s how the line of Ole Henriksen products was born.

I can’t believe summer is just around the corner! We all want to get our skin summer ready, especially after a long winter that wreaked havoc on our skin, causing it to be dry, dull. I witness the transformational powers of peeling treatments daily. With that in mind, I created my Lemon Strip Flash PeelOle Henriksen Lemon Strip Flash Peel 1.7oz to give you all the benefits of a peel in the comfort of your own home. This potent peel exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin surface cells to help improve the appearance of skin tone, skin texture and dull looking skin. I recommend using this treatment once or twice a week depending on your skin's needs. Follow with a hydrating honey mask (yes, plain, sweet honey). You'll love it and so will your skin.

Cheers to a flawless summer complexion.

Liquid Knit Heaven: Video Blog!

When I first started my collection with QVC twenty-three years ago, the line was based on silk/like woven pieces that were figure flattering and extremely comfortable, we called it SG Sport. As my line evolved, so did the material. I wanted to take that same idea of comfort and style from SG Sport and develop a soft, stretch, knit collection. Being a working mother of three, I understood the importance of throwing on an outfit, taking the kids to the bus stop, then hopping into the car to drive to work all while looking and staying presentable!

I always loved the look and feel of silk, but knew that it wasn't practical for the everyday woman on the go. Trial after trial, we finally knew that we hit the jackpot when we were draping the fabric on the dress form and we saw how it glided and flowed over the form -just like liquid! On top of the gorgeous texture, this fabric had an incredible amount of stretch and recovery for comfort, and was virtually maintenance free. No wrinkling, machine washable and it lasts forever! When we debuted the new fabric on QVC, woman started writing to me for more and more... they couldn't get enough - Thus my signature fabric, Liquid Knit was born! :)

What are your favorite Liquid Knit pieces? Do you still have any of the early Liquid Knit designs in your closet?

Please join me Wednesday, May 15th at 3pm ET for a special hour jewelry show (including my NEW Liquid Jewelry) and then at 9am ET Thursday, May 16th for fashion fun with Pat!

xoxo,

Susan

Hello, hello!

Spring is in the air, and with this new fresh season, I am excited to debut NEW, NEW, and more NEW designs including a special TSV.

As cliché as it may sound, every Spring feels fresh and new to me.  There is something about walking through Central Park and seeing the cherry blossoms, lush green grass and trees, and the new flower buds that puts a kick in my step.  My mood always lightens with the start of Spring.  I feel refreshed and renewed and ready to take on the world!  I also always feel very grateful this time of year, post-Mother’s Day, as my sons and their families always host a special Mother’s Day brunch.  So, last week, we all gathered at one of our favorite restaurants on Long Island, and enjoyed the afternoon together.  It was such a lovely day and a treat to have our family together in one room.  As life gets busier and the grandchildren get older, it's no small feat to gather all 16 of us!  So, THANK YOU to Peter, David, and Brian, for giving me the best Mother’s Day that I could ever imagine.

How was your Mother’s Day?  I hope all of you Moms out there were pampered, as I firmly believe that being a Mother is the most important job that you will ever have.  In that spirit, celebrate yourself and this month, indulge yourself in anything that makes you feel good – from a spa treatment to a day of relaxing and reading magazines to treating yourself to new jewelry!

Without keeping you in suspense any longer, it is with great pleasure that I debut my May TSV, the new Odyssey Watch, which features 10 floating Diamonique stones in the case.  It is the perfect Spring watch with the whimsical feel that the floating stones create.  This timepiece can easily be dressed up or down with its more classic croco-embossed leather strap, which coordinates with the colors of the floating stones.  This is my first watch design with a genuine Italian leather band, which will be available in black, white, turquoise, and taupe.  It will be the perfect addition to your jewelry collection as it coordinates well with both sterling silver and 14K gold clad pieces.  As an “odyssey” is often a series of wandering or adventures, I hope you will enjoy this special design throughout all of your many adventures this Spring and Summer.  I just love to watch the stones shake and float in their own adventurous odyssey inside the watch face constantly separating and reforming into new shapes and configurations.  The floating stones make each watch uniquely yours with every turn of your wrist.

Another new favorite of mine is the Sterling and 14K Clad Diamonique Hoop Earrings (J280122).  Hoop earrings are a timeless favorite, and I think that every woman should have a pair in her jewelry collection.  They are a great basic piece and easy to wear.  What I love about this NEW hoop design is that I incorporated an Assher Cut Diamonique stone, which was a hit in the solitaire ring and stud earrings that I previously brought to you.  An Assher Cut stone always adds a unique touch of glamour, which makes this earring, like the Odyssey watch, easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion.  Also, with gold becoming an even bigger trend, it was important to me to offer this new design in both a goldtone and rosetone.  And, for those of you who have sons like me, you can tell them that you like hoops as much as they do – hoop earrings to their basketball hoops.  (That is what I have told my own sons for the last 30 years, anyway!)

If you are starting to add more 14K clad to your jewelry wardrobe, please check out this link, which I hope will inspire you with other pieces you can layer in to your collection.

With gold front and center, I thought it only appropriate to debut some of the most popular pieces in 14K including the Assher Cut Diamonique Ring (J280114).  This best-selling design is also a great piece to start your 14K clad collection with as a solitaire ring is a perfect every day ring.  I have also put together a collection of other pieces that I think are great “everyday essentials.”  This assortment includes a mix of both 14K clad and sterling pieces, all of which are great basics which are easy to layer into your existing collection and add a pop of pizzazz to your Spring wardrobe.

Last but DEFINITELY not least, I have a big surprise and delight for all of you, which is a NEW collection of Tanzanite pieces including the Sterling Oval Tanzanite Textured Cuff (J279888), the coordinating Sterling Tanzanite Earrings (J279887), and two Tanzanite chains, one in 18-inch and one in 20-inch lengths (J280155).

Tanzanite has been a long-time favorite with its deep blue and rich coloring.  But, what many people don't know about this special stone is that it is the first gemstone to have been added by the American Gem Trade Association to the list of Birthstones since 1912 and is now an official Birthstone of December.  So, for all of you December babies out there, celebrate your 1/2 birthday (coming up in June!) by treating yourself to a piece or pieces in this new collection.  The meaning behind this exquisite stone makes it even more special, as it is thought to have many mystical and healing powers, including uplifting and opening the heart.  It is said that people who wear Tanzanite are well grounded in truth, nature, and spirituality.  I love the meaning behind this gemstone which shows us all a more graceful, gracious way to live.

Living with grace and sharing our lives with friends and family is one of the most important lessons we can all learn, and I try to remind myself of this every day.  I feel very lucky to be surrounded by wonderful family, friends, and fans including each of you who have shown me unconditional support and enthusiasm for my designs.  I would also like to take a moment and thank the Ripkanistas for their love and support.  This past month, I was lucky enough to have lunch with a fabulous group of people who presented me the most beautiful floral box which included personal letters to me.  Here are some pictures from the luncheon, which I hope you enjoy.

Tonight we have the perfect bra solution for you - Barely Breezies TSV!

Hi ladies!  I'm so anxious for summer weather and all the great clothes we get to enjoy --- but I don't like having any show-through of my bra under my tops!  You know the kinds of bras that show their material through your shirt or when it's cold inside with the air conditioner on --- and we need some modesty?!?

TONIGHT we kick off the solution to all those issues with our Barely Breezies TSV during our first 2 hour "Flatter Your Figure With Jacque" 12am ET/9pm PT!  Barely Breezies comes to the rescue with their latest version of their Best Selling T-Shirt Bra!  It's the first ever Barely Breezies Printed Satin T-Shirt Bra!

You'll love the color choices:  Grey, Nude, Black, Pink, Light Blue --- and for the first time offering Teal in a Today's Special Value!  The fun leopard tonal print gives us some added fun!

The reason I'm so passionate about this new bra --- I was a bra fitter at a major department store at one point in my life!  Now - first thing is first - if you haven't replaced your bras in quite some time - tonight is your night!  If you're not replacing

your bras on a regular basis - the broken down elastic is not giving you breasts the proper support!  Elastic wears out after time - so do your "girls" a favor and give them some much needed support!  Bras should fit snug across the back for proper support - and this bra has built in comfort stretch across the back bra wing and hook closure!

You'll get support from this fantastic bra from Barely Breezies - along with their signature UltimAir lining to wick away any moisture so you stay cool and dry!

But the fact that this bra has modesty built in - so you have no show-through when you go into a place where the air conditioning is on High - is extremely important!  Of course as a "T-Shirt Bra" it leaves a smooth silhouette underneath anything you're wearing!

If you have questions - please let me know!

Our Family Vacation To Jamaica!

The last time I took a vacation over three days, I was on my honeymoon. Suffice it to say, I was in need of a prolonged getaway. Luckily, living in NYC means direct flights to the Caribbean and Jamaica, so quick trips for some fun in the sun and sand are a real possibility. Don’t worry – this time, I remembered a passport for my son!

We chose the Half Moon resort in Jamaica, where the people were warm, the local food was delicious (Ashvin loved it! Surprise, surprise – he’s a big eater) and the views were just what I needed. The key to this trip’s success? Our private pool. My husband will kill me for sharing this, but hey, here goes: he can’t swim. His idea of “swimming” is reading the newspaper in the water. I wanted to spare him the embarrassment I knew he’d feel climbing into a public pool, so I opted for a suite with a private one. Don’t I score major wife points here? Our suite also came with a rollaway crib, which let us roll Ashvin into the shade for a nap, letting him enjoy the ocean air while he slept and us to keep an eye on him. Ultimately, it was like having our own house within the hotel grounds. What a treat!

To me, there is nothing as calming as the water. The feeling of being submersed is unlike anything – the quiet and tranquility are unmatched. We took a paddle boat out one day (my husband fought me – “Who will save me if we flip over? You’ll save the baby, who will save me?”). With Ashvin in my lap, we headed out, and our time “at sea” was my favorite of our trip. No distractions – no phones, no technology – only my family, me and the sun. Perfect.

Evening desserts by the pool and strolls on the beach (wearing my Joan Rivers sunglasses, of course!) made it difficult to transition back to real life, but I can’t complain. Real life is pretty great, too :)

It's almost Monday, so The Wishful Dish is upon us!

With Memorial Day right around the corner, the grill is definitely on my mind.  I think the number one food for the grill has to be the burger.  But how do we take a burger from average to amazing?

First, we skip the hamburger, and go right the steakburger.  Kansas City Steak Company makes the tastiest burgers in the biz and because they are made from steak trimmings, they are more juicy and flavorful than you can imagine. So, by themselves, they are delicious, but if you really want to kick it up a notch, add a condiment.  Now I don't mean ketchup or mustard, but aioli. Please don't let that scare you, because an aioli is simply a garlic mayonnaise.

My show, The Wishful Dish, is about bringing everyone back to the table, so the recipe has to be quick and easy (and yummy!).  And when you order something frozen from my show on Monday, it will get there by Friday.  So, here is my Friday Night Meal!  It may sound fancy, but this is as easy as it gets, and its packed with flavor.

Here is the basic recipe:

Garlic Aioli

2 cloves of garlic (or three if you are daring!)
1 cup of mayonnaise
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt

After you remove the skin from the garlic, mince the cloves finely. Then, you can crush the garlic by using the flat side of the knife and scrape the minced garlic while pressing at the same time.  This creates a paste-like texture that releases the garlic essence into the mayonnaise.  After this, mix the rest of the ingredients together, cover, and let the flavors blossom in the fridge for about a half hour.  Grill the burgers to your liking, and spread it on top!  That's it!

Quick tip:  Fresh garlic is best, but if you are short on time, grab a jar of crushed garlic.  It's okay to substitute to get the job done!

Now, that's just the beginning!  If you want to get creative, just take the basic recipe and use it as a springboard for other awesome flavors.  You can add ketchup, sweet relish, horseradish (one of my personal faves!), paprika, or anything you want!

Also, the buyers have been able to get a great value on a new Cheryl's
cookie assortment that expires at the end of the day tomorrow, but you
can look at it now by clicking here.

So, I'm looking forward to having you join me tomorrow at 5pm for the
Wishful Dish!  Don't forget to bring your appetite!
