Cooking on Q: My 21st QVC Cooking Event

$

This Sunday, March 10 will be Cooking on Q—my 21st 24-hour cooking event at QVC! I just realized that today when driving home. That's something, no?

All these cooking events have had a few things in common: tons of food, lots of people, and a fair amount of chaos. Over the years, the behind-the-scenes chaos has calmed down and is now much smoother than it used to be. When I first arrived at QVC back in 2001, cooking event day was a day that the crew sort of dreaded. Food stylists would need to scramble to secure a table on which they could present their food and products. Tongs and towels were in short supply and hidden away like prized items. People were tired, having prepped food for days, and missed a lot of sleep. Inevitably, tempers would flare and there would be tears before the day was over. These days, our cooking events seem to run almost like clockwork. The prep kitchen has expanded significantly since the old days, more presentation tables have been built, and there are more people on staff to help out and get things done. I say "almost like clockwork," because it's live television after all, and some unexpected surprises are bound to pop up at the last minute.
What has really changed over the years is the product assortment. Cooking on Q is a day full of the latest gadgets and kitchen gizmos. It's always exciting to see what new cooking solutions are out on the market. It's also great to get a peek at the new designs and patterns that have been incorporated into regular items.

What I like best, however, is seeing the tried-and-true products that have appeared at every cooking event. One such item is the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Everyone I know in the food world loves and respects the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. It's a part of every professional kitchen that I've ever been in, worked in, known, or even heard about. Whenever I think of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer, I remember my very first one and how it came to live in my kitchen.

I was working in California as the manager of a cooking school in a kitchen store. One night when I was at home I received a phone call saying that the school and store were on fire! I jumped in my car and headed over. It was a three-alarm fire and by the time I arrived, fire trucks were shooting water into the building from every direction. A crowd had gathered and there was nothing any of the workers could do but watch the building burn to the ground. Suddenly, one of the store staff members who was a friend of mine yelled to me and called me over to the bookstore patio across the street. She had seen a white KitchenAid Stand Mixer floating out of the store and had grabbed it. It was covered in soot and several scratches, but sure enough, when she plugged it into an outlet, the mixer worked! We were astounded! That poor little KitchenAid mixer—its home had burned down and it had lost everything (including its whisk attachment). It was the least I could do—I adopted it and brought it home. ;-)

I had that mixer for a few years. The smoke stains always reminded me of my old job which I had really enjoyed. After a few years, however, I upgraded to a larger KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Now I have a gunmetal gray, 6-quart KitchenAid Stand Mixer sitting on my kitchen counter. That mixer is older than all the 20 cooking events that I've been involved with, and it'll definitely last me through all the ones yet to come.

So I'll see you Sunday! I'll be on the air with Carolyn Gracie for Kitchen Unlimited with Carolyn at 9am ET and again with David Venable on In the Kitchen with David at Noon ET. Can't wait to see you then :)

In my cup: Iced mocha latte made with my favorite Starbucks Sumatra Blend K-Cup.

All the spring holidays and events are almost here! There's Easter events, Passover gatherings, communions, bridal showers, baby showers—the list goes on.

I love to set up a beautiful dessert table for my spring events. Tiered plates, an assortment of beautiful desserts, pretty linens. At the center of the table or foldaway cart is always my trusty Keurig, an array of K-Cup portion packs, and yummy toppings and fixings—of course—for the amazing creations my guests are sure to make for their beverages.

For Easter, I've decided to focus on iced beverages like iced teas and some delicious iced coffee drinks. My plan is to place the recipes in a frame on the table next to the brewer and let my guests "Keurig" to their hearts content.

We have a huge Keurig day this weekend, all day Sunday. Cooking on Q never disappoints, and we love to bring you some great offers. Maybe you're looking to upgrade your brewer to our Platinum Series Quiet Brewer? Or maybe you're looking for an additional brewer that you can use in a smaller space like our new Keurig Personal Brewer? Perhaps you're getting nervous with all the entertaining events on the calendar and are looking for some great new K-Cup flavors? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, please join us on Sunday!
First, we'll be bringing you an hour of Keurig at 8am ET with the wonderful Leah Williams, then having a visit to In the Kitchen with David at Noon ET, and ending out our day with another hour of Keurig at 8pm ET with the lovely Mary Beth Roe. Keurig has recently partnered with another great name in beverages—teas to be exact. So we'll be sharing this exciting news as well! (Hint: it begins with an "L," has six letters, and ends with an "N.")

Hope to see you all there! And we'd love it if you would share any Keurig questions in the comments section below. We'd also love to hear your entertaining ideas with Keurig. What kinds of special drinks do you and your guests enjoy?

Enjoy your day! Xoxo,
—Melissa Fleming-Epps

We Are Searching For The Next Big Thing In Beauty!

It is awards season, and not just for actors and actresses! Beauty brands, big and small, are competing for the industry’s highest honor, The Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) Awards, Beauty’s Insider’s Choice Awards. CEW Members (people working in the field of beauty) vote on the most innovative products of the year.

Each year, our QVC beauty team heads to New York to walk the countless isles at the Product Demonstration event. It’s a chance for companies to show off their new products in an effort to get some votes. We always go with a different agenda. We look for products and brands that you, our QVC customer, would like to see. Over the years, our team has “discovered” some incredible people. In fact, three years ago, Jamie Kern Lima from It Cosmetics, says she “nervously approached” a QVC beauty buyer, hoping to someday be on your television screen.  We all loved her and now she is one of our most popular color cosmetic brands. At the Product Demonstrations, she pulled me aside and told me that meeting the QVC team at CEW changed her life and she still gets teary-eyed talking about it (she is the sweetest!)

So, based stories like Jamie’s and our strong partnership with CEW, for the first time ever, CEW has added the QVC Beauty Quest to the list of awards. They are calling it the next “big thing” in beauty.  Here’s a quote from the CEW website that sums it up nicely:

“Part of QVC’s success model is that they build trust with the consumer through the power of the relationship so they’re looking at a product that has the ability to emotionally connect with the customer and deliver great results and benefits!”

As we walked the isles last week, there were several exciting companies, people, and products that stood out. Now we need to narrow them down. We will announce the finalists in April. The winner will be announced at the 2013 Beauty Insiders’ Choice Awards Luncheon in May. Then, our winning product will be featured during our CEW show this summer on QVC! I'll be keeping you posted about all things CEW on my Facebook page.

What kind of beauty product would you like to see on QVC? You can comment here or join the discussion on my Facebook page.  Have a great week!

Spring is here!

Dear friends,

I'm so excited to be back in West Chester! Although I was home for less than one week after I came back from the Bonanaza event last week, I had an amazing week with the family. The weather is already sunny and we had a great time cycling and even running a 2-mile race with the kids...I cant believe how fast this year went by!  It's already  spring time and Passover is in 2 weeks.

We all started the preparations for my favorite holiday!  It's the time of the year that the weather is perfect to hike and enjoy the beauty of the countryside of Israel.  I'm planning to take the week off and spend quality time with my family and friends.

Oh well...back to work...the reason I'm so excited about this visit is because we never had an event as special as we have this week. It all started over 6 months ago when we wanted to create a special "limited items" event, using the most rare and expensive gem stones that we ever created in the Paz collections! I can tell you today that it was a huge challenge to resource and find all those stones around the world, but it was a great experience for me and the Paz look is getting a different perspective and touch by using such exotic stones...some of the items are limited and we won't be able to get any more of the gems.  One ring was re-designed according to the stock I was able to find (Adi Paz morganite ring) so today and tomorrow's events truly resemble a boutique  jewelry shop.  I can't wait to share with you!

Please join me today and tomorrow between 1-3pm for Jovella Style!

“Come Ye Back” to the Emerald Isle!

$

With St. Patrick’s Day 2013 upon us, I wanted to share stories of some of my most memorable trips to Ireland! My Mom’s dream was to visit Ireland.  So, in 1988 the two of us planned a trip to the Emerald Isle. It was a dream come true for us, and we had such a marvelous time!  Visiting Dublin and Cork, kissing the Blarney Stone, touring the Ring of Kerry on an impossibly blue sky day, and our favorite, a trip to Dingle on a misty Irish morning.  We loved having soup, brown bread and coffee for lunch in the pubs, still the best I have ever had.  She passed away in 1991, so we never got our second trip in, but somehow I know that Ireland is a part of her heaven.

Sean and I were married for a little over two months when the first Irish show was scheduled on QVC and we were asked to go to Ireland.  This is the trip where we met Matt Doolan of Boyne Valley Weavers, a friend who is still bringing us beautiful things today! We stayed in Dromoland Castle on the last night and, since it was February, we were about the only people there! But we promised that we would someday return and stay in Dromoland again.

Then, along came a little Irish lass named Cara! When she was two years old we crossed the ocean to visit her Grandparents who retired to Galway.  We spent a week there and Cara had the dancing gene already as she loved going to see the traditional Irish dancers and musicians. Her favorite spot was the Cliffs of Moher, were she played Sleeping Beauty around the round tower on the hill. We decided we needed to come back here too someday!

Fast forward about 13 years and now as a family of four, we decided to go back to Ireland, since Deirdre had never been.  We went to the Cliffs of Moher, stayed in Dromoland Castle, and on a misty Irish day went to Dingle.

Our tour guide, Tim, loved the story of how my Mom and I adored Dingle, so every few minutes he would say in his Irish brogue, “Oh, your Mother is so happy you’ve come back to Dingle.”  I agree, and I know no matter what, I will always want to come back to Ireland.

St. Tropez & The Most Awkward Stage of My Life

$

Full disclaimer: I plan to use a lot of sarcasm and dramatic interpretation in the story I'm about to tell you because that's how life is at 13. Please enjoy :-)

At the very beginning stages of life, and by that I mean functioning as a 5-6-7 year old person, You think you've got it all figured out. Your life was simple; there's an idealistic routine you become accustomed to and I admit ... I got comfortable.

The next stage of life is the first time you come into contact with the phrase "stuff hit the fan." Im talking about the revolution that is the between the ages of 11-13 which for a lot of us is comparable to the first circle of the underworld.  Hormones are kicked into high gear... In my case my hair went from a mild wave to 0-60 Roseanne Roseannadana, there was talking of training and undergarments (which of course I thought was silly because why would anyone want to wear "one of those things"... Ew), and all of the sudden people were coming to school with makeup on. I couldn't believe it. Makeup.

With all of that going on I decided the age of 13 was going to be my year, which naturally meant the universe decided it was going to be the most awkward year ever. I had started experimenting with cosmic style makeup and made an investment in a patent leather white pair of Doc Martin boots that even now, I don't think I could forgive myself for. None of that went entirely too well with the fairest of fair skin I was rocking.

Growing up in my moms hair salon, I was always privee to what was the newest on the market in terms of color cosmetics, hair styles, and body treatments. It was almost as if when the the sign went up in my moms salon that read "St. Tropez" it was the universe's way of giving me a break... Only I didn't fully pay attention.

I decided one fateful night to go into my momma's bathroom and "borrow" her St. Tropez. I decided I should only use it on my legs that way she wouldn't notice I has used it.  When I turned and looked into the mirror, I couldn't believe it!  My legs looked like they were out of a magazine! I had never seen such beautiful rich color before! It seemed too good to be true.

Here's where it got interesting... I thought I had outsmarted my mother... I thought, since I have this amazing tan, I'll just bring my shorts in my backpack and change into them like all the other girls do at school and that way everyone can see my new tan... And so I did.

It wasn't until lunch time that all of my girlfriends came over and asked me what I had used... They were in awe of the amazing color. It was the best five moments... I was now the most popular girl in my group.  It wasn't until I got separated in the lunch line that I would have the most humiliating experience ever.

My friend Alex Ramsey was in front of me picking our his vegetables when he turned around and gave me the once over. This is where I had the first "I still got it!" Wave of emotion. He then looked perplexed... Took a bite of his French Fry and asked the question I will remember for the rest if my life "Courtney, why are your legs a different color than your face?" I could feel what little color I had in my face leave my body... I didn't have an answer for him. We both just stood there and for a 13 year old boy who was probably figuring out at that age you should never ask a girl too many questions it was almost like he knew to change the subject. We paid for our lunch and went our separate ways.

I went immediately to the bathroom to see how bad it was and it was if the music from a scary movie had entered my mind. In the most dramatic thought process ever... It looked like my face and hands were about 73 shades lighter than my legs. I couldn't believe it didn't think about applying it to my face and hands! I couldn't run quickly enough to my backpack to change back into the jeans my momma sent me to school in.

When I got back to the table, my semi rebellious girlfriends were bummed that I had put my pristinely tanned legs away! They never even noticed the difference between my face and the color of my legs... Gotta give it to great girlfriends. We all cheer each other on during the trials and tribulations of beauty!

And that how this love affair started... And of course now, I remember to apply all over instead of one specific place :-).

Side note, When I first came to qvc I ran into Amy Stran and commented oh how great her skin looked and she said "oh thanks! It's my St. Tropez. It's the gift I give myself everyday." I knew right then and there, we were going to be instant friends :-)

Needless to say, I am extremely excited about our TSV that's coming up on Tuesday. I like many of you will be enjoying it on auto delivery.

For PM style, I will be rocking my St. Tropez as well as another beautiful frock from Isaac. Everything I wear by him these days I feel can be styled so many different ways... So I'm sticking with him this week. Who knows.. I may come in a little casual or I may take it to the nines... Either way, ill talk to you soon!

Have a great week!

Hello, foodies…

What a day we had yesterday! WHEW! I went home, sat on the couch, and don’t remember much after that! I hope you found some great items to help you with Easter dinner and all the entertaining ahead.

Speaking of entertaining…are you having friends and family over for St. Patrick's Day this weekend? I sure hope so. There are some incredible recipes out there and this Wednesday we've got another to add to your idea bank: Colcannon!

Colcannon

Colcannon

This recipe is prepared with the 10” Lightweight Cast Iron Everyday Pan by MarkCharles Misilli (K36357).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

4 thick-cut bacon slices, diced
2-1/2 lbs Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 3" pieces
1 Tbsp + 1 tsp kosher salt
1 large onion, diced
1 lb cabbage, cored and chopped
4 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup milk
1/2 tsp ground black pepper

Directions:

Sauté the bacon over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet until crisp.

Remove the bacon pieces and set aside. Add the cabbage and onions to the rendered fat, cover the pan, and sauté on low heat until tender, about 20 minutes. Stir frequently.

In the meantime, add the potatoes to a 5-quart stockpot. Cover the potatoes with water and add 1 Tbsp of salt. Simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.

When the potatoes are done, drain and place them into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the bacon, the finished cabbage and onion mixture, butter, heavy cream, milk, 1 tsp salt, and black pepper. Mix on low speed until mashed.

Obviously, this is side can be as traditional and basic as you like. Original recipes called for cabbage, potatoes, and onion. If less-is-more is your style, omit as you please. If you love cream, butter, and the divine swine, as I do, go to town!

Did you notice that pretty Belleek dish in the photo? That's our TSV® on Wednesday! Irish Celebrity Chef and Restaurateur Neven Maguire will be here for the presentation. And, during In the Kitchen with David, we're welcoming the chef into our "Cookbook Corner" with MacNean Restaurant Cookbook, a collection of recipes from his very own restaurant, MacNean House in Ireland.

If you're planning your Irish feast, here are a few more recipes you might add to your menu. All of these live on David's Recipe Page on QVC.com. We've got one more coming on Sunday…check back on Friday for the new dish!

Lamb Stew

Irish Soda Bread

Tell me about your heritage for your blog question this week. Are you Irish? Spanish? Maybe Native American? Or, are you a little of everything!? I'm definitely a mixture...English and Scotch-Irish.

Keep it flavorful!
David

P.S. I almost forgot! We've got TWO "Cookbook Corner" titles this Wednesday night…the first is from Chef Neven; the second is from Southern Living and it's their Rotisserie Chicken Cookbook…101 recipes you can make with a store-bought rotisserie chicken. I love it!

Hello my LCNY fashionistas... Yes the clocks changed. Talk about tired the day after.  Why does it always take a couple of days to catch up from the time change when many a night we have gotten less sleep? Go figure.  The results of our spring color poll are in... drum roll please!!! The winner is (just so you know there is a very handsome gentleman handing the results, we take this very seriously) POOL BLUE!!! Thank you, my friends, for participating. Pool blue is a new color we launched this season.  It lets us know we are on the right track with you.  In case you are wondering what color was biting on the heels of pool blue, it was PINK GRAPEFRUIT.  No surprise right?  Our lovely MBR always looks beautiful in that color.  Speaking of color we have a wonderful lineup this Wednesday.  Three new items and a dress, a little bit of insider trading so to speak, only the blog readers get the scoop.  I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the beautiful pool blue item you will want to check out is A231944 - 3/4 sleeve polished cotton tunic.  How happy are you that you chose to read my blog?  Get your LCNY fix this Wednesday. We have been given 3/20 off only to return to our friends the following week.  I look forward as always to my Wednesday mornings with you.  Bring the coffee and bagels, I will bring the fashions!

Denim & Co. Ladies, are you ready for ROUND TWO??? A few weeks ago, we debuted our very first Denim & Co. "DESIGNER vs. DIVA" Viewer Poll. It was a HUGE success and ALOT of fun for everyone!! You have all told me since then how much you enjoyed voting on your favorite between the two tops. Both were great tops...both had different pros and cons, in your opinion! The REALLY fun part was not knowing which top was chosen by Denim & Co. Lead Designer, Gary, and which was chosen by ME, your resident Denim & Co. Diva!! Well...as most of you know by now, Gary's top was chosen as the favorite by the most voters!!!

Gary and Me

So now...we are READY FOR ROUND TWO!!! Once again, we are going to show you a photo and description of two BRAND NEW Denim & Co. tops, and THIS time, per your request, we're giving you more details on each item. Once again, we will each say WHY we chose that particular top. Once again, we ask YOU to pick YOUR favorite between the two, and, if you can, tell us WHY you like one over the other. This just might be a tough decision! Although the tops are very different, they are both great additions to your wardrobe for many reasons!

Remember, we really LOVE getting your feedback, and it will help us choose future Denim & Co. items to offer you on the Q!! You'll have one week to vote and leave your comments! We will announce which top got the most votes and which one of us picked it during our Denim & Co. 11 AM ET show on Tuesday, March 26th!! After we announce the winner, you'll be able to purchase one or both tops, if you so desire, or you can shop now!

So…here are the "contenders"!! LET THE VOTING BEGIN!!! Choose your favorite! Which one will win - Designer's Pick or Diva's Pick??? Only YOU will determine the outcome!!!

Gary and Me

Have fun!! I can't wait to see which one gets the most votes!!!

XOXO,

Carolyn

A232027 DENIM & CO. 3/4 SLEEVE KNIT TOP WITH ADJUSTABLE RUCHING DETAIL

Description: This top features a new fashion detail on a customer favorite silhouette! The bottom has adjustable drawstring cords that can be "ruched" or not! It features a V-neckline, ¾-sleeves, and cuff detail. It is semi-fitted, made of a 95% cotton/5% spandex fabric blend, and the length ranges from 28-1/2 inches in the XXS to 32-3/4 inches in the 3X. It is available in 5 color choices: White, Black, Bright Rose Pink, Summer Green and Sun Yellow.

DENIM & CO. 3/4 SLEEVE KNIT TOP WITH ADJUSTABLE RUCHING DETAIL

Why it was chosen: "I picked this top because it's not just another T-shirt! It's as comfy as a tee but has that extra special detail of the adjustable ties on the sides. It can be worn more loosely and relaxed or ruched up a bit for a little more fashion-ality and a more fitted look, depending on what you wear on the bottom! I also like the ties on the sides because they are new and different, not like lots of  other tops out there. The V-neckline is a bit more soft, feminine, and versatile than a basic crew neck, and the ¾-sleeves make it wearable season after season. It's a great casual top to wear now with jeans or twills and later with capris, crops or pedal pushers in the warmer months!"

A231868 DENIM & CO. KNIT TANK TOP WITH BATTENBURG LACE DETAIL

Description: The basic tank now has a feminine touch of Battenberg lace! It features dyed-to-match lace at the neckline. It's sleeveless, fitted, and made of 100% cotton. It's a great layering piece for jackets, cardigans, or big shirts. The length ranges from 25-1/2 inches in the XXS to 29-3/4 inches in the 3X. It is available in 6 color choices: White, Black, Bright Green, Light Aqua, Light Coral, and New Stone.

DENIM & CO. KNIT TANK TOP WITH BATTENBURG LACE DETAIL

Why it was chosen: "I picked this top because I love the idea of an updated tank! It is so versatile and, with the feminine detail of the Battenberg lace, it will look great under jackets and cardigans now and wonderful alone as well in the warmer months!! Although it is considered to be a "fitted" tank, it is made of a stretchy rib knit fabric in 100% breathable cotton that is really soft and comfortable. It is more special than a solid tank, and the beautiful Battenberg lace not only adds that pretty feminine detail, but is right on-trend for the new Spring season. It will add a fresh touch to your wardrobe basics!"

How long have you been at Q?  It’s been 22 years!  I started as a model in January 1991.

What was the process to become a model then & is it still the same today?  It’s funny because I met a model at a fashion show I was doing, & she told me who to call.  My contact at Q was one of the producers.  I called him, and after a few minutes of chatting, he wanted to meet me.  When I came in for the meeting, he said “this where you’ll model, this is where you’ll change.  I’ll call when we need you.”  And that was it!  Of course, the process is very different now.  Today you have to have an agent & go through training, etc...

Where did you grow up?  Delaware County & South Jersey.

Where did you go to school & what was your first job out of college?  I went to Neuman College which is now Neuman University, where I majored in Communications.  One day my work study boss from Neuman called & said she had a job that might interest me.  It was for an Audio/Visual Services Specialist at Philadelphia Textile, now Philadelphia University.

When did you start modeling?  I actually got into modeling around the same time as I began work with Philadelphia University. In fact while I was modeling for QVC, I was doing double-duty at the University.

How did your A/V Specialist position & being a model help prepare you for the face of Quacker Factory?  First, I love that I know what’s going on behind the scenes.  My A/V position was instrumental in prepping me for the anything I would encounter behind the cameras.  Of course, modeling gave me the opportunity to learn about being in front of the cameras, the different fashion brands as well as being able to hone my sense of style.  And along the way, I became a fashion stylist, a fit model & a fashion show coordinator/ commentator.  All of that…led me to this!

How did you meet Jeanne Bice?  At QVC.  I don’t remember my first encounter; but, I started modeling for QF here & there.  At one point Jeanne was having a big party in Florida to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Quacker Factory Show.  She invited all the models who worked for her; but, I was the only one who went.  My sister & I flew down to join the party (at our own expense, of course) & that really impressed Jeanne.  So, the next morning she invited us to come for lunch at her house.  When we got there, to my surprise, she wasn’t wearing her headband (Angel laughs)! I feel like I was one of the privileged people to have seen her without her headband!  From that point on we began to develop a strong friendship, which led to my becoming her make-up artist & then, ultimately, a job with the design team.  (On a side note:  As I began working more for Jeanne, the less time I had for modeling on Q, I had no idea what I was being prepared for just a few short years down the road!)

What has your journey been like since Jeanne’s passing?  It will be 2 years in June. I never thought she would pass as suddenly as she did.  I would always tell her she would live a whole lot longer than any of us.  Unfortunately, she did die, and we all had to deal with & handle it somehow.  Believe me, I would rather her still be alive giving me a hard time!  Over the past 2 years, I have a new-found respect for the business she built.  She was and, still is, an icon!  We’ve had to continue on with her business, her legacy & honor her as best we can.  I also have tremendous respect for the sisterhood she built called the “Quackers”.  I am honored to be able to continue that sisterhood & am so happy they (the “Quackers”) have accepted me as the face of Quacker Factory.

Speaking of coming into your own & being the face of QF,you won the 2012 Q Star Guest Excellence Award!  Yes!  I felt like I got an Oscar!  First of all, I couldn’t believe I was even nominated by my peers at Q.  And I really couldn’t believe I won the award.  It was a huge, huge honor!

Anything you want to share about your personal life:  I love to travel!

What are your favorite places?  Montreal, Chicago & the Caribbean.  But, Glen & I are hoping to go to Italy soon.  I was there in 1996.  I really want to show him how beautiful Italy is & how amazing the people, food & wine are.

Anything else you like to do in your spare time besides travel?  Scrapbooking & riding motorcycles.  My very 1st motorcycle ride was 3 yrs ago with Glen.  I don’t want to learn how to ride; (laughs) I just want to be a passenger!

Do you have any sibs?  3 sisters.  2 older, 1 younger.  I also have 6 nephews, 4 great nephews, & 2 great nieces!  They are delicious!  I talk a lot about Ben & Alex on air because I spend a lot of time with them. They’re my younger sisters’ boys.  I help my little sister, Vicky, a lot since our mom passed away 10 years ago.

Your mom passed away.  Did you have a good/close relationship?  Absolutely, yes!

What was one of the biggest lessons she taught you?  (My side note:  Angel paused as she welled up with tears and emotion.  I was honored to be a part of such a holy moment as she remembers her mom.)  She taught me to be confident in myself.  That no matter what I looked like, it didn’t matter.  And I turned it (my plus size figure) into a career!   So, I would pass this on to the plus size girls:  Be confident in who you are!

What has changed with Quacker Factory over the past few years or are you staying true to Jeanne’s vision?  We’re staying true to Jeanne’s vision.  This is what our customer requires of us.  But because everyone loves the DreamJeannes so much, we are trying some new things this year like the DreamKnit.  It’s a very flowy, soft, gorgeous fabrication.  We will continue to stay true to the whimsy, the fun, the embroidery, & the sparkle & shine about which Jeanne was so passionate.

I feel like there are a lot of closet “Quackers” who haven’t taken the plunge yet.  What would you say to say to her?  I have a lot of people write & say they haven’t purchased, but they like watching me.  And what I always say is: “One day, we’re gonna get ya!”  (laughs)  My recommendation would be to start off with one of our lighter (in terms of embellishment) or popular items like the grommet T-shirt detail or the 1x1 ribbed mini sequin top . They’re really hot items & work no matter what your style.

So, are you going to get her with the TSV?  (laughs)  I certainly hope so!

Why?  We took our grommet tee& incorporated the detailing into the TSV in gold vs. silvertone, which is different for us.  We also inlaid stones for added detail.  The fabric is amazing & the colors are spot-on!  Our girls have been asking for the 4-piece wardrober we used to do. So for the TSV we’ve designed several pieces that go along with it so she can build her own wardrobe!

Where can we reach you and join the “Quacker” sisterhood?  Angel Smedley QVC FB or Angel@QuackerFactory.com.

Thank you so much for spending time with me, Angel.  I loved getting to know you even better.  It’s easy to see why the sisterhood has accepted and opened their arms to you!  Thank you, Nancy

One of my greatest pleasures in life is the love of our dog, Lucy. I haven’t had a dog for many years, actually since I lived with my parents. It was just too hard with the crazy schedule I had, and I was never home.  I felt bad even thinking about having a pooch. Instead, I had my cat, Tigger, and then I added another kitty, Pasha, to the family. I had to put Tigger down last year – it was such a great loss to me. He was my bud, my baby. He was with me through a terrible break up, three moves from an apartment, to a house, to an apartment, and finally into our new home. He was with me through my Mother’s death and lots of other ups and downs in my life. I was so sad to let him go, but it was his time.

Three years ago, I met Glen. And he introduced me to his pup, Lucy. Lucy is the sweetest dog you could ever want to have. She greets us all the time with a wagging tail and kisses if we will let her. She lets us know when she is happy and when she is sad. She commands me to feed her – I know it should be the other way around, but I am a bit of a pushover when it comes to her. I think I may have ruined any training she may have received from Glen!! He is so not happy about that!! Well, what can I do??

As we move into spring, I want to get outside more with her and Glen for hikes and lots of play time. It is good for all of us! So in the spirit of spring fashion, spring weather and spring fun, I wanted to share with you this adorable photo of our girl! She is helping us celebrate our big day today. Doesn’t she look smashing?!?!

Lucy!

An Interview with Kate from Inspired Style

Hello there my Inspired Style viewers!  Well we've seen Kate on air and on my Facebook posts but now we are going to get to know a little bit more about the gal who hangs out with us every Thursday night.  We love having Kate as part of the Inspired style family.  Not only is she fashionable but she is kind and sweet too -- The whole package!

Q: What do you do at QVC?

A: I am an Associate Producer here at QVC, which means I am in charge of coordinating and assisting all production activities  on the studio floor  during the live show. On any given day this includes: host/guest/model movement, camera blocking, product flow and demonstrations, and directing the "Testimonial Call" interview and approval process for on-air.  I am also a part of the Studio Scoop team and we capture behind the scenes pictures, write all-access blogs, and are on the scene for the celebrity visits to our studio!

Q: What do you like about being a part of Inspired Style?

A: I love being a part of Inspired Style because it's such a collective effort to bring ideas, fun fashion talk, and a down to earth approach to styling, trends, and working accessories into basics any woman would have in her closet. Everyone on set has a lot of fun before, during, and after the shows. Amy, Iris, and Deanna, all have great personalities and they make working on the show a lot of fun! The crew cares a lot about the show from beginning to end, and it's great to be part of such a dedicated team!

Q: How would you describe your personal style?

A: Describing my personal style is hard to put into one category because I have worked for many retail companies before I came to QVC, with each one being entirely different in styles and tastes!  Along the way I picked up ideas, trends, and tastes, from each brand, and worked them into my overall style today. If I had to choose I would say I am most comfortable dressed up, usually a simple bottom (like jeans), some heels, (I'm short!) paired with a bold top and bolder accessories-I  love statement earrings and necklaces, and I can never have enough sparkle in my jewelry!

Q: What is your favorite brand or product at QVC?

A: My favorite product at QVC would have to be St. Tropez Sunless Tanner! If there is one item I would panic without it would be this! I love being tan, but in a healthy way, and this tanner creates such a realistic, dark tan that makes me feel so much better about being in shorts, & dresses, without having to compromise my skin's health! I would recommend this to anyone who wants a great glow!

Q: Share a fun fact about yourself.

A: A fun fact about me is that I have a twin sister, Erin,  who also works at QVC with me, and she too works in the studio and is a member of the Studio Scoop team.  Multiple times a day we confuse someone who thinks that they are talking to the one sister until they find out it's the wrong one, and then they learn we are twins. It can be fun having people guess which sister is which!

Hairspray!

Tracy Turnblad! You know the name if you’re a fan of musical theater, movie musicals, or campy 80's films. Tracy is the lead character in “Hairspray”.

Being known for a heavy-duty hairspray helmet hair-do is fine for a 60's era fictional character, but in “real life 2013” -- undetectable hairspray is a must.

I was given Alterna Hairspray to try this week. I had never used it before. I had the can in my hand walking through the Host Lounge when Pat James-Dementri saw me and said, “I LOVE Alterna hair products”. We chatted for a bit and then I continued on my way to the studio salon to get my hair and make-up done for the show. I handed the can of spray to Deana our make-up artist and said, “Can you try this on me today?” She said, “This stuff is the best”!!

Those were two reliable endorsements as far as I was concerned. But Saturday in AM Beauty, we’re going to have the expert show and tell us what is so great about Alterna Caviar Hairspray.

A lot of us have questions when it comes to choosing and using hairspray.

Questions like “How do I get hold and still have soft hair?” or, “I have baby fine hair, how do I keep hairspray from weighing it down?”

So, share your hairspray questions with me here and I’ll try to get them answered during Saturday’s show.

See you then!

Leah
