My All-Time Favorite Hostess Gifts - With A Personal Touch!

0
0

We’ve all been there: jumping into the holiday season with a calendar full of fabulous hang-outs, brunches and parties; wracking our brains for just the right hostess gift.

Now is the perfect time to plan ahead. Of course, you can never go wrong with a bottle of wine. But I’m a sucker for a hostess gift that shows I went the extra mile and added a personal touch with one particular hostess in mind.

This tradition (okay…obsession) started for me years and years ago. I was giving a dinner party, and though it wasn’t my very first, I was still a little nervous. My close friend gave me a beautiful monogrammed candle as a hostess gift. To this day, it stands out in my memory not just because I loved it, but because she took the time to put some extra thought and effort into the choice and presentation…and it showed!

Ever since, I’ve made it a point to pay it forward to all the lucky hostesses in my life. Here are the hostess gifts I’ll be bringing to my holiday parties this year…PLUS that special something that makes them each stand out.

1) Mally Liquid Lipsticks

Mally Liquid Lipstick Collection

These are my favorite kind of hostess gifts, because I buy plenty then break up the sets for all the fabulous ladies in my life! But the real secret is in the bonus gift. I’ve paired them with an organza bag filled with Italian chocolates. Or a vintage compact I picked up in a flea market. Or I nestle them in a micro-mini clutch, perfect for slipping into your gym bag or evening bag.

My perfect finishing touch: A hand-written tag saying “Kisses! From Tara” tied on with a beautiful ribbon.

2) Cheryl’s Cookies

Cheryl's Cookies

This may be hard to believe, but I think Cheryl’s Cookies might actually bump the traditional bottle of wine out of first place for the perfect hostess gift. At least, if the reaction I get when I show up bearing a yummy batch of Cheryl’s Cookies is any indication!

Packaging and a personal note are key here, too. I usually go with something like, “Sweets for the sweetest hostess I know.” Or, “C is for Completely Charming!” And because Cheryl’s Cookies come individually wrapped, they’re perfect for arranging in almost any vessel you can think of. I’ve piled them in a skinny wine tote, in a customized Christmas stocking…even in a festive, ribbon-wrapped take-out container for a yummy and unexpected surprise!

3) Temp-tations Old World Cookie Jar with Cheryl’s Cookies

Temp-tations Cookie Jar

Of course, for the temp-tationistas in your life, there’s the ultimate cookie container – a beautiful temp-tations cookie jar chock full of Cheryl’s cookies!

Teaming up with Cheryl was such a dream come true. I’ve been filling all sorts of temp-tations pieces with her delicious treats for years. So it was great to bring that tradition to others this year.

But personalization is key here. Know your Nista and what patterns and colors she collects. It makes a huge difference!

4) Temp-tations Candle

Temp-tations Candle

When I think of all the hard work that goes into planning and executing the perfect event…What hostess doesn’t deserve a little R&R afterward?

That’s why I love giving a gift that encourages some pampering for the hard-working hostess. Like this candle, paired with a favorite book or maybe a selection of favorite teas or coffee beans.

Just tie it all up with a ribbon and add a note that says, “Me time!” It’s the perfect Instant After-Party Recovery Kit!

5)Temp-tations Old World Bread Basket

Temp-tations Bread Basket

What I love about this bread basket is that the gifting possibilities are endless! Want to perk up that classic bottle of wine? Wrap it in our cloth napkin and nestle it in the bread basket tied with a festive bow. You can also fill the basket with a great bottle of infused olive oil and a fresh loaf of bread for a gift that just begs to be shared. Or pack the dry ingredients for your favorite quick bread recipe in a decorative canning jar, along with a hand-written recipe card, for a gift with a cozy kitchen feel.

So, bring on the holiday parties! We’re ready for them! I can’t wait to give back to my favorite hostesses this year. And I can’t wait to hear from my favorite Nistas! What are your go-to hostess gifts?

XO,

Tara

Hello, foodies…

I had today off, so I DECORATED FOR CHRISTMAS! My Bose was stocked full of Christmas CDs and I’m sure all of West Chester heard me singing this morning. Meanwhile, I just got home from the grocery store with 7,000 batteries because I need them for all of my Bethlehem Lights. Have you started decorating yet?

“Christmas Around the World” continues this Wednesday night on In the Kitchen with David. And this week we’re going to Mexico! Foodies, our ITKWD team has friends all over the world. And, to give you insider insight about Mexico and its traditions, our Senior Copywriter Amy asked her long-time friend Cesar to help. We’re indebted to Cesar for his time...not to mention his lovely wife Heather for translating so perfectly! (Happy First Anniversary, you two!)

Heather & Cesar

Amy: What are some of the most popular Christmas customs in Mexico?
Cesar: Everyone attends church services (a large majority of Mexicans are Catholic), gathering with family and friends, street festivals with music and dancing, and lots of food!

Amy: Where did you grow up? Did your town have any special traditions?
Cesar: I grew up in a large town in the state of Jalisco called Lagos de Moreno. Spending time with family is very important in Mexico, and being one of four children it was important for all of our siblings to get together while my mom and sisters prepared a big meal. Music was always playing, and the men were kind of "banned" from the kitchen while the women cooked.

Amy: Is Christmas Eve just as important as Christmas Day? Is there another day that you celebrate?
Cesar: Christmas Eve is more of a day of celebration—they close the streets, music plays, people dance, and we have bonfires. It’s kind of like mini street festivals in each town. Christmas Day is more of a quieter day to spend with family, eating food, and attending church.

On December 12th, we have “Dia de Guadalupe”, which is a very popular feast in which Catholics worship the Virgin of Guadalupe (who is like Mexico’s Virgin Mary). This day is celebrated by attending church and many towns have parades to worship this patron saint. Many homes also have a mini ‘shrine’ set up in their house with a painting or statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe surrounded by candles and roses.

Amy: Does Santa exist or come? What are children taught about him?
Cesar: Santa does exist in Mexico, though children are taught that the “Nino Dios” (Jesus) is the one who visits their house to bring small presents. There doesn’t seem to be as much emphasis placed on Santa, it’s more focused on the religious aspect and that Jesus comes to each house Christmas Eve to bless the children while they sleep and bring a few small presents.

Now, on January 6th, we have something called the “Dia de Los Reyes” (Day of the Three Wise Men) and children that have behaved nicely all year will receive a visit and presents from the Three Wise Men. This is more comparable to Santa, as children tend to receive more presents on this day then on Christmas, and many leave milk and cookies out for the Wise Men. Like Christmas, Dia de Los Reyes is celebrated with street festivals and religious ceremonies and bakeries sell “Rosca de Reyes,” which is a ring-shaped Mexican sweet bread which is baked with two small dolls inside. If a person is given a slice of the bread with the doll inside, they are supposed to make tamales for their entire family.

Amy: What kinds of food does your family enjoy at Christmas?
Cesar: Tamales are always a favorite and they’re made of masa (kind of like cornmeal), chicken/pork, salsa, and chilies then wrapped in corn husks and steamed. We also have Posole, a spicy pork soup made with dried ancho chilies and hominy. It's served with tostados (fried tortillas), topped with fresh lime juice, and garnishes of shredded cabbage or lettuce, radishes, onions, and cilantro. Ponche Navideno is also popular…and it’s a warm punch made from cinnamon sticks, cloves, guavas, sugar cane, apples, pears, and oranges.

Amy: Do you happen to have any family recipes that you'd be willing to share?
Cesar: Posole is one of my favorite dishes...my mom used to make it for me when I lived in Mexico. The soup gets its heat from the dried ancho chilies, and our family eats ours with shredded lettuce, radishes, onions, avocado, cilantro, oregano, and fresh-squeezed lime juice. Here’s the recipe:

Posole

Ingredients:
Soup:
•    2 lbs pork shoulder, cut into small pieces
•    5 quarts water
•    1 head of garlic, finely chopped
•    1 lb canned hominy, drained and rinsed
•    10 medium dried Ancho chilies (more or less to taste)
•    Salt and pepper to taste
•    Half a lime
Garnishes:
•    Shredded lettuce or cabbage
•    Sliced radishes
•    Finely chopped onions
•    Freshly chopped cilantro
•    Dried oregano
•    Lime wedges
•    Diced avocado
•    Tostadas

Directions:
1.    Add the pork to about 5 quarts of salted water. Bring to a boil.  Add the chopped garlic and drained hominy. Cook for 2-3 hours until the meat is tender and can be cut into small pieces.
2.    While meat is cooking, prepare chilies by removing seeds and veins and then soak in hot water for about 20 minutes. Remove the chilies from the water and blend with about a ½ cup of the pork stock/broth. Add the pepper-mixture to the soup and continue simmering the soup until the meat is cooked thoroughly.
3.    When the soup is ready, spoon it into soup bowls and squeeze fresh lime over each bowl. Add the garnishes and enjoy!

Feliz Navidad, everyone! (Are you singing the song, now?) Many thanks to Cesar for sharing his family’s traditions. My recipe this Wednesday is another Mexican staple: hot chocolate!

Mexican Hot Chocolate

Mexican Hot Chocolate
Makes approximately two small mugs of hot chocolate.

This recipe is prepared using the Set of 4 In the Kitchen with David® Ceramic Mugs (K38333).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups whole milk
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 oz bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao), chopped
  • 1 (3.25-oz) original Mexican hot chocolate round tablet, chopped
  • 1/3 cup condensed milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Combine the milk, cinnamon sticks, and cocoa powder in a medium-size saucepan. Steep the milk over low heat for 20 minutes.
  2. Remove the cinnamon sticks. Add both of the chocolates, condensed milk, and vanilla. Stir the mixture until the chocolate is completely melted.
  3. Pour into mugs and serve immediately.

Foodies, for today’s blog question, tell me what’s your favorite holiday beverage? Is it hot chocolate? Do you wait all year for eggnog? Are you mulling over whether to have a little mulled cider right now? I’ll see you Wednesday at 8pm ET.

Keep it flavorful!

From Russia with Love

0

After my last QVC show, I was “Back in the USSR” as the Beatles sang, or more properly today, the Russia Federation. Ron and I traveled to Moscow for the Press Party and Gala for the opening of my new and larger shop, since after three years of selling my jewelry in Moscow and growing the brand we needed more space.

So before I turn to my upcoming December shows and new goodies for you, let me share some of my Moscow moments.

First some facts – Moscow was founded in the early 13th century and considers itself the third Rome behind the Eternal City and Constantinople. Like Rome, it was built upon 7 hills. It is the largest city in the world in area.

From the airport to the hotel, a two hour bumper to bumper car trip we discovered one of the biggest frustrations about Moscow, its traffic. In city center it can take an hour and a half to go a mile. After resting up from the flight, we headed to dinner at Café Pushkin, to meet with our Moscow team.

Café Pushkin lit up for Holiday.

We left the Hotel at 6:30pm during rush hour and arrived at the restaurant at 8:00pm. After dinner, it took us 7 minutes to return to the Hotel. That is Moscow. Between 10am and 10pm traffic is crazy and everyone runs late, very late. We sampled some amazing traditional Russian dishes at dinner and bonded with our team over several bottles of Russian Standard Vodka.

Inside Café Pushkin

I am not a drinker, but, hey, when in Moscow….After downing a few drinks we felt more like a family than co-workers. Our Moscow staff are all university graduates, stylish, fluent in English and represent my brand extremely well. They are the reason that Judith Ripka has become the top selling American Jewelry brand in Moscow. Meet Roza, Director of International Sales, who runs the Russia operation.

Katya, who handles PR for me throughout the Russia Federation

The following morning Roza and I took a tour of the fashion shops.

Roza and I walking the stores

In every city I visit, the first thing I always do is walk the stores, especially the jewelry stores to see what is popular, understand the merchandising for the Moscow customer, learn what is trending, all to inform myself what to design for that customer. Our walking tour took us to the upscale shopping area where brands such as Ralph Lauren , Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Gucci amongst others had stores.

Then we visited the two main department stores GUM, the oldest and most traditional

GUM Department Store

And TSUM, the newest, largest and most fashion forward

TSUM Department Store

Inside Tsum

I loved this piece in Tsum.

What surprised me most on this tour were all the Christmas decorations and trees everywhere including Red Square.

It was really cold. Even Roza, a Moscovite by birth, acknowledged how cold it was but knew how to dress for it.

I learned that the Russians celebrate Christmas. Santa arrives in Moscowon December 31st.

It took us 9 hours to fly from New York to Moscow; it  apparently takes Reindeer seven days. I also discovered that the Russians celebrate a New New Year (January 1) and the old New Year (January 7 based on the Gregorian calendar). The period from January 1 and January 7 is their biggest shopping period.

After shopping in the morning, we lunched at the Vogue Café where I was introduced to buck thorn berry tea from Eastern Russia which is claimed to have medicinal and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also delicious. The Café was very chic with the walls adored with model shots from Vogue Magazine.

From lunch, we did some sight seeing. Unlike my trip to St. Petersburgin July, which was 90% play and 10% work, this trip was 90% work. The afternoon was my only chance to see the usual tourist places. Roza took Ron and me to Red Square where we visited St. Basil’s Church, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, The "Big Ben" of the Kremlin, and Lenin's Tomb.

My favorite spot was the Museum, which is called the State Department of Treasures in Russia, which housed the Crown Jewels in the Kremlin.

It was heavily guarded. We had to pass through metal detectors and had our cameras and cell phones confiscated and returned when we exited. The jewels and gems were incredible. I took notes though and made sketches. One showcase held 30,000 carats of rough diamonds from the Ural Mountains. Another had 900 extraordinary large natural uncut diamonds. The largest of them had names: “Free Russia” (241.8 carats); “The Star of Yakut” (232 carats); “The Creator” (298.4 carats); “The Alexander Pushkin” (320.7 carats) and the largest of all “The 26th Congress of the Communist Party” (342.57 carats). A third case displayed the “Russian Beauty” Tiara which had 1000 large diamonds and 25 cultured pearls and the “Russian Field” Tiara which was centered on a magnificent yellow diamond of 35.5 carats surrounded by breathtaking white diamonds. There is so much more but time, space and memory are limited.

That night we dined sat Baccarat, one of the most elegant and romantic restaurants in which I have ever dined. The crystal and chandelier were exquisite and the furniture was designed by Philippe Starck.

Getting my store ready for the Gala

It was hard work all day but also fun to share my story and inspiration with the editors, from the local newspapers and fashion magazines including Vogue and Harper-Bazaar and Tatler amongst others who would in turn share it with their readers. We started early and finished at 4:30pm, just in time to race back to the Hotel, close my eyes for 30 minutes, and then get dressed for the Opening Night Gala.

The Moscow team presented me with a book on the Crown Jewels; the cover is the Russian Field Tiara with the yellow diamond center I described.

After the Gala we all went for midnight cocktails in the Observatory Lounge overlooking Moscow where we said our goodbyes and thanked our Russian team for such a wonderful time.

We left early the next morning for home. As soon as I stepped on the plane, one of my flight attendants came up to me showing off her Judith Ripka QVC earrings and “The Cuff,” which brings me back to my December shows, a TSV, and some new special treats I have saved for these end of the year shows.

Flight Attendant from the flight home

My first new offering to you is the TSV. It is a watch. But a watch with many options. The first option is color. It comes in silver, chocolate and black and each color comes with three additional interchangeable straps besides its metal band. Mix and match to go from playful to elegant.

The watches, like most of my other watches, are stainless steel with ionic plating in your color choice and a Swiss parts movement. This one has my favored deployment clasp for that luxury touch.

I previewed it at the holiday party in my store and from the reaction I received from the Ripkanistas, I am pretty sure that you will love it. The item number is J288035 at $229 and $239 for the black spinel.

To complement this offer I will be presenting my first ever watch box, H202070, a solid wood and wood veneer construction, glass window top, fabric lining, with space for eight watches and a pull out draw for additional storage. It comes with a key to lock the watch compartment. Finally, after a year of your asking and my promising, it has arrived!

Lastly, but not least, I am introducing 4 new pieces of a brand new collection, which I designed in collaboration with Swarovski. It is my first collaboration with another designer and it is exciting. Swarovski, the premier producer of precision cut stones, has created a trademarked Judith Ripka Double Brilliant Diamonique Stone with 118 facets for a unique and exceptional brilliance and sparkle.

This is 18 more facets than the 100 facet stone I have been using. Every stone has my name inscribed on the table as it has been made solely and specially for me. Thank you Swarovski. I have taken these brilliant stones and set them in unique Ripkarized settings as rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets and more. There will be four offerings for these shows, J288489, J288481, J288605, and J288606 which start from $79 and go up to $859.

I will feature some more of this collection on my December 17th show and keep them coming next year because it is such a very special happening when a new stone cut is created by the world’s best and given to me for my exclusive use.

Please tune in on December 5th 11pm-midnight, and on December 6th midnight-2am3-5am9-11am3-5pm and 7-9pmYou just have to wait to see it all.

Love always,

Judith

Turn Last Year's Christmas Cards into This Year's Gift Tags!

0

Hi, everyone,

A few months back we made Christmas Card Holders on You’re Home with Jill so you have a festive, dedicated space to store your Christmas cards. Yesterday afternoon, I opened the mailbox and wouldn’t you know, our very first card of the season was inside! Two things immediately came to mind: one, I have the PERFECT place to hang this! And two, I have GOT to get my cards in the mail. Yikes.

Are you the kind of person who keeps their holiday cards year-to-year? My mother ALWAYS did so she knew who to send them to and so we could repurpose those festive cards into gift tags! Looking back, it probably saved us a little money at the holidays because that was one less thing we had to buy. But they were also beautiful! Sometimes if the card was really complex, you could make several tags out of one picture. Other times, you made giant tags for those big packages.

Here’s just an example of how these could look:

Christmas Card Gift Tags

Christmas Card Gift Tags

Now, these are MUCH more elaborate than the gift tags we ever made. If you have time, as I did here, you can back the tags on card stock, add some decorative accents—including a reinforced ring for the ribbon, and then stringing the ribbon, of course. If you’re like me and have a craft drawer, sprucing is easy peasy. If you don’t have those accents on hand, however, just cut those cards down to size, punch a hole in the top, and use whatever string you have handy to make the loop!

It’s always fun to have the kids help make the gift tags. Trevor and Kylie like to help with this and Kylie actually loves to have her gift tags shaped into the letter “K.” I love it, too, because it makes it easy to identify which gifts are hers!

When you’re wrapping presents this year, gift tags can make any package look beautifully wrapped. But so can little sprigs of berries or an unusual kind of ribbon. I love using burlap to make packages seem more festive. Anything you’d use to decorate garland or a Christmas tree would work on top of a gift. I’m also a big fan of gift bags...especially for things like balls, blankets, and things that just will not fit into a four-corner box! Try tying the handles with ribbon to make it look professionally done. And, for that extra special touch, slide an evergreen bough through the loop.

Speaking of wrapping gifts, how are you doing with your shopping? Here’s a gift idea that any girlfriend would love…a Sachi “Lunchin Ladies” Tote (K39650).

The Christmas season is upon us! I hope you’re getting in the spirit…I know I am! :) See you soon.

From my home to yours,
—Jill

How WE would wear it! See how the footwear team wears the shoes you love

Hi Footwear Friends,

Lauren here, this week we were inspired by the “How would you wear it” segment in Leah Loves Shoes! If you haven’t seen it yet, in each Leah Loves Shoes show we ask people on the street how they would wear one shoe from the show. The responses have been great, and we love hearing how different people would wear our shoes at the Q.

Here is how we wear our favorite QVC shoes:

Sara, our Merch Trainee, took the Clarks Indigo Lida Sayer’s for a stoll in West Chester, PA! She paired these mid shaft boots with the skirted legging and a loose sweater. The wine color of these boots is perfect for any fall outfit.

Benedicte, footwear planner, is rocking the White Mountain Sapphire Boots! I love her fun pop of interest with the printed tights. I also spot the popular Jacqueline Kennedy paperclip necklace.

Our planner Chantel, and her future baby girl ;) , are wearing a pair of Clarks tall shaft boots. These clarks boots are perfect for the comfort, but are still stylish! She paired the boots with leggings, textured dress, and an infinity scarf.

Here is Laura, Associate Buyer, rocking the Clarks Crystal Peridot wedges. These shoes work great with tights for a put together outfit at work. I could also see them with boot cut or skinny jeans!

Lindsay, our Associate Buyer, shows her office look and her “walking into the office” look! On cold mornings, Lindsay wears her cozy Mountrek Ellie boots in and out of the building, then can slip on the Clarks shooties for a day in the office.

Andrea, Associate Buyer, is the epitome of causal comfort in the BareTraps Tansy boots. She paired them with leggings and a sweater for her look.

As you can see, we really do love the shoes we buy for you!

How do you wear your favorite pair of shoes from the Q?

Until next time shoe lovers,

Lauren

It’s that time of the year again and everyone at Team WEN is busy preparing for the upcoming holidays. We’re thankful for so many things this year—our busiest year yet! The most important, of course, is family and friends, which we are grateful for every single day. They help give us the energy to push forward and make the most of everything we do. Many of our customers feel like part of our extended family as well. We hear from so many of you throughout the year, and all the positivity you bring into our lives helps make all the hard work worth it.

We've been looking forward to our trip back to QVC more than usual this year. We're from Los Angeles, and the holidays don’t quite have that festive, wintry feeling for us until we land in Pennsylvania and see our first snow of the season. We love it—though, like many of you, we agree that a little snow can go a long way. We’ve been through multi-day power outages too!

These December shows have a ton of amazing WEN products in store for you. From the launch of the new seasonal scent Winter Cranberry Mint, to an amazing Today's Special Value® offer coming up this Saturday, December 7 at Midnight ET, we have a lot to share and we hope you guys are ready for it all. And if that isn’t enough, we’ve got more holiday gift sets than ever before, ready to gift in beautiful boxes for everyone on your gift list.

The puppies and I take off soon and can’t wait to see you all this December.

Happy Holidays and Many Blessings,

Check out her Holiday Set, which includes her easy updo tool, the Wrap Up, a lovely rhinestone encrusted headband, plus a cute bagette to pack it all away or carry out with you on the town. High Fashion Top Knot

This sophisticated style makes a statement of the Audrey Hepburn variety, and looks great on girls with bangs and an off shoulder style dress to really show off your neckline.

Sarah Says:

FIRST Coat your brush with hairspray to tame flyaways as you pull hair into a pony

DON'T FORGET Look up, not down as you make a higher than usual ponytail, which will prevent any bumps underneath and set your bun on the top of your head

USE THE TOOL Pinch and pull the wrap up through the ponytail hair, then just wrap and secure to create a bun

FINALLY Finish with the headband to accessorize your sleek new look

Low Maintenance, Big Style Bun

A favorite style that’s sophisticated yet trendy and super low maintenance, perfect for dancing the night away since it’s already-messy look won’t require a lot of upkeep.

Make it extra special:

THE DETAILS Beachwave some tendrils of hair in the front to pull out of the bun later

OPPOSITES ATTRACT Secure a low bun on the opposite side from your deep side part

KEEP IT LOOSE Use the Wrap Up to make your bun, and remember it’s supposed to be unkempt

FINAL TOUCH Pull out Beachwave’d locks and place on headband, lining up the rhinestones on the same side as your low bun

Fun Faux Bob

Channel Daisy Buchanan with a glam faux bob that carries a zero commitment policy at your next very special occasion.

How to Fool Them All:

CHAMELEON Use the Wrap Up tool in one of three colors that will blend well with your hair

ALL IN Pull all of your hair through the Wrap Up and begin rolling up

STYLE IT Shape and secure into a bob style around the nape of your neck

SECURE Use bobby pins to keep the Wrap Up in place and add the headband for the finishing touch

As I have shared before, I am an Army Brat. It is easiest to describe my “growing up” in thirds.  A third of my life was in the Northeast of the U.S, a third of my life was in the Southeast of the U.S. and a third of my life was in Germany. It has made me an eclectic eater, for sure! But I am pretty out of the box, so would you expect anything less??

I feel like living in the South gave me my deep love for fresh fruit and veggies. The Southeast has many great things going for it, for sure. They also have great sunlight and great dirt! It is just the perfect formula for delicious produce. Fresh peaches just melt the day away!

I then feel like living up North has contributed to my love of casseroles. I do love a one-pot wonder when the weather cools down and if you put potatoes and cheese together, we might be best friends.

Living in Germany while I was growing up gave me my absolute love of ALL baked goods! Cake, cookies, pies, pastries, doughnuts – you name it. I was IN THERE. We were so lucky to live in so many beautiful German towns that were filled with delightful Mom-and-Pop bakeries (called “konditorei” in German). There you could find a warm family and a cozy spot where you could enjoy anything your little, sweet heart desired. One of my favs? Chocolate. NOBODY does chocolate like Germany!

As you may have heard on ITKWD or read on my Facebook page, I choose to eat gluten free, but it has not always been that way! I have learned a LOT so far and would love to know: what gluten free baking recipes do you want to see?  Sugar cookies? Macaroons? Chocolate Brownies? I sure would love to help! Please let me know by responding here or to my Facebook page and I will post a requested recipe in my next blog! Happy cooking and thank you, as always, for sharing.

All the best! ~ Mary QVC

This Friday night is the big "Posh Presents Show" on A Lisa Robertson Christmas! What's a posh gift? It's that ultimate gift. And how do you make sure your recipient absolutely loves it?

We've been doing a Posh Gifts show for many years always highlighting high-end, beautiful gifts for the season. I am excited, as Friday is a chance to dress up, have some friends in, and have a holiday party. This week Michael Beaudry is back with his "mosaic set" diamonds, Jai John Hardy has a new limited edition cuff, we have theG.I.L.I.(TM) Large Roma Tote in a beautiful croco, the G.I.L.I.(TM) leather jacket, a new venture with G.I.L.I.(TM) and Dennis Basso, plus beauty, jewelry, something special from Junior's, and the list goes on.

There will also be a webcast going from the party during the show (which you can watch on QVC.com or the interactive app on your iPad), so you can watch two ways. Talk about a lot going on! If you're going to pick a night to stay in, make it Friday. We'll make it worth it. :)

See you then!

The Right Accessories Really Finish A Look!

Hi, Kids!

I’m thrilled to be back on my blog talking about two HUGE parts of my life that have intersected – QVC and Project Runway! This season was so much fun to tape – we had AMAZINGLY talented designers, fabulous guest judges (HELLO, LISA ROBERTSON!), and, of course, that cute, cute, cute QVC accessory wall. MAJOR. I have to say, accessories really make or break these designer's creations. The right accessories really finish a look. You'll notice that Georgina and I really comment quite a bit about the accessories. It speaks to the designer's overall taste, and we keep that in mind throughout the season.

I have to be honest with you, girls. After three seasons, it isn't any easier to send someone home. These designers work so hard staying up all night slaving away at their garments, and the thought of just dismissing them is DREADFUL. I really try to encourage these designers, not bring them down. I'll point out something I love and tell them to do more of that, instead of saying how much I hate everything else.

I hope you've been enjoying the show so far!

Tune in to my weekly show on QVC, Mondays at 10 PM ET, and Project Runway All Stars on Lifetime, Thursdays at 9pm ET.

The National Christmas Museum - A Trip Back in Time!

0

In case you missed my visit to the National Christmas Museum last weekend on QVC, I wanted to share a little bit about the Museum. It’s in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Paradise PA. This is a great representation of what Christmas was like in years past.  A nostalgic time before technology evolved into what it is today. A simple time with simple but meaningful things.

The founder, Jim Morrison, wanted his visitors to “see Christmas through the eyes of a child” just as he did years ago.

He spoke about when he was young and purchased his first Christmas decoration from Woolworth’s for ten cents. In one of the many rooms in the museum, there is a replica of the Woolworth 5 & 10 store of the 1950’s just as Jim remembers it, and all of the pieces are part of his personal collection. It's pretty amazing!

There are over 20,000 square feet of scenery including a train room, Santa's Workshop, and Tudor Town.  There are also life size characters that take you on a journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. One Nativity is nearly one hundred years old!

So, If you’re ever in Paradise, PA, be sure to stop in and say hello to Jim AKA Santa!

“Forgotten” Cookies

Every Christmas we have egg whites left over from baking, so we make forgotten cookies! This recipe has been a family favorite since my Mom started making them over 30 years ago. They always turn out perfectly in the Kitchenaid mixer. Enjoy hassle free baking, and flourless baking too!

Here is Deirdre at age 6 making cookies. Don't you just love the kitty and puppy jammies!

Ingredients:

  • 2 large egg whites, at room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2/3 cup superfine granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Several drops red or green food coloring

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and spray 2 baking sheets with cooking spray.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat egg whites until very foamy. Add the cream of tartar and beat until fluffy. Add sugar gradually. When the sugar has been added, add the vanilla extract. Continue beating until meringue is shiny. Add food coloring if desired. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.  Drop one spoonful at a time onto baking sheet.  Place baking sheets in the preheated oven and turn the oven OFF. Leave the cookies (undisturbed) in the oven for at least 2 hours and up to overnight, or until cookies are crisp and dry. That’s why they are called “forgotten cookies”.

Here’s a tip: You can use mint extract and tint the cookies green for a chocolate mint flavor too!

Enjoy!

-Jane
