Valentine's Day Traditions

$

Valentine’s Day is such a wonderful time to show the ones you love how much they mean to you. One of our new family traditions is making heart shaped pancakes for breakfast. My son gets so excited to decorate and design the pancakes. The first thing we do is get all of our supplies together: pancake mix, chocolate chips, whipped cream, heart cutters, and strawberries and then the fun begins. You can use lots of other fun additions too with whatever you fancy like bananas, blueberries, or even sprinkles. For the first batch, we went all out and made one really fun elaborate pancake!

My baby girl is still too little to help with the decorating but her task was to dress up in a cute red dress and cheer us on! Here are some of our pictures of us in action:

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone! Hope you have a great day! If you have any fun plans or traditions, I would love to hear about them.

Life is a one-of-a-kind design in process (Carolyn Pollack's Story)

I am a strong believer in serendipity. In my life, I have been fortunate to be faced with both obstacles and opportunities that have guided my journey in unexpected ways. As one of four children raised by a single mom, it was a fortunate necessity that I get creative and resourceful if I wanted new clothing, my first snow skis, or a new bike. My mom and I designed my clothing, and she brought them to life late at night at the sewing machine. I worked on my cousin’s farm until I was old enough to work at the local department store. There I met my first professional mentor, Dixie, who took me under her wing and challenged me with heading up the company’s Teen Board and Career Board while a full time college student. She believed in me more than I did, and I am forever grateful.

My first job out of college was with a fashion jewelry company that was the main jewelry vendor to an up and coming Minnesota company by the name of Target. Mr. Lawrence called me into his office one day and asked if I would move to Los Angeles, where Target was expanding. He felt our Minnesota headquarters could use some boots on the ground and eyes on the trends in California. Now I was perfectly happy in Minneapolis, and was actually shocked when the word “yes” came out of my mouth!  While in LA, a friend and I were reading a newspaper article about this magical place called Santa Fe, and decided to take a road trip.  I knew the minute we reached New Mexico that it was the place for me, and I moved there the next year.   Little did I know I would meet the love of my life, who just happened to be producing jewelry! It was a match made in jewelry heaven, and we were married 11 months later.

I never imagined I would be on television, but have since come to learn that my sister Becky always thought I would be a news anchor. Little did she know I was petrified of the camera!!! So on Thanksgiving day in 1995 when Bill put me on the plane and wished me luck on my first QVC appearance, I was wondering what the heck I was doing!! But Bill believed in me, as well as the people at QVC, so all I could do was trust that they knew something I didn’t!

A lot has happened since that first nervous appearance. Bill and I are blessed to employ 200 people in Albuquerque who have been up to the challenges of an ever evolving company. What started as a Southwestern jewelry company now includes my Carolyn Pollack Sterling designer brand. I am so proud of all of the craftspeople who have challenged themselves and grown with us through the years. Creating 400 increasingly difficult and beautiful new designs per year takes a talented, passionate team. And thank you all for collecting our jewelry and sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. You are a blessing in my life, and I thank QVC for bringing us together. When work is such a big part of your life, you better have fun along the way and as you can see from the photos here, Bill and I have had more than our share of fun with QVC!

I am grateful for the love and commitment my mom showed during those difficult years. Speaking of serendipity, I remember vividly the look on my mom’s face when she got off the phone that night in 1979. One of her high school friends remembered my mom’s dream of owning a bridal shop someday. This friend was ready to try something new in her life, and she and my mom soon opened up shop in a charming historic house. While my mom was passionate about the business, her friend decided it wasn’t for her, and they parted ways. It was a sad situation that I shared while at work with Dixie at the department store. As luck would have it, the company was ready to lease its bridal department rather than continuing to run it themselves. Dixie wondered if my mom would like to lease it. That phone call to my mom would be one of the happiest of my life. What started out in a back corner of the dress department, my mom would grow to be one of the largest bridal shops in Minnesota. And yes, that still meant spending late nights at the sewing machine making sure every wedding was perfect!

Valentine’s Day is here!  With a household of seven, we have a lot of celebrating to do. Our house is always full of love, but February is an extra special month for us all to reflect on the essence of family & friends.

family

I’m so excited to share with you all a new tradition we started this year!  Pinterest has so many great ideas and this one caught my eye—I couldn't wait to try it out!  It's called a "Valentine Love Banner “ and I was in love with the idea that it could bring some smiles to my children’s faces.  Arts & crafts are always so fun to do, so we gave this one a try!

My husband Keith & I hung ribbons on each of the kiddos bedroom doors and each day they awoke to a new "thing" that Mom and Dad love about them. These special notes were written on a numbered heart and attached to the ribbon. We started it on February 1st and it has changed our morning routine for the better!  The usual struggles to get everyone up & moving have been replaced with excitement to get out of bed and see what had been left for them.   Not only did the children enjoy it - but it was a great time for my husband and I to sit and reflect on each of the five individually.  It's something we definitely will be doing again next year and reminds us how lucky we are to have each other and our beautiful children.

door valentines

And Valentines...it's also time to share Valentines with your classmates!  This was a fun project as well that my family was able to do together. We searched the internet and everyone picked out what they wanted to do. We ran to the store, gathered all the supplies and came home to work on the children’s Valentines.  I had the opportunity to sit with each of my children and assemble their Valentines with them. What a special time for all of us!
valentines
With our busy household and crazy schedules, individual time with each of the five is something that doesn't happen often enough. With this project we completed two things - finished class Valentines and spent very precious time together. I cherish these moments.  With Cassidy turning 15, Chloe and Lily at ten and Brady and Cole at six, time is flying by way too quickly.

What did we sip on while we assembled our Valentines?  Well, Cafe Escapes Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa of course (M109774) - made complete by a heart shaped marshmallow peep.  Always a hit and extra yummy!  The best part was that the kiddos were able to do this all by themselves with just the touch of a button :-)

hot cocoa

Speaking of hot cocoa - Keurig will be back on February 18th at 6pm EST with an hour of amazing offers and brewers. I will be joining Sharon Faetsch and we will be sharing fun entertaining ideas! All Keurig brewers will be on EZ pay at this time as well!

Looking forward to seeing you then! Here's a special recipe for you to enjoy….

What are you doing for Valentine’s Day? Whatever it is, I am hoping it is filled with lots of love...and coffee. :)

Joe n I originally had plans to go to a couple's retreat to celebrate Valentine's Day, but the snow put a damper on that, so we went with plan B ....... the Big Apple, NYC! A little snow cud never stop the city that never sleeps!

We had a fab' late lunch at Balthazar in soho, then saw 'Jersey Boys' on Broadway.

From there we went to the Freedom tower...quiet, peaceful snow falling. Was very emotional. Almost 13 yrs ... and still hurts so bad

We are so glad to be joining you this February to offer these much-loved philosophy anti-aging products in our Today’s Special Value® system. It includes some of our favorite products, so we couldn't resist the urge to write and tell you why!

philosophy super-size resurface & reveal system for anti-aging
philosophy super-size resurface & reveal system for anti-aging

Dara Lynn:
How would you like to have the look of ageless, flawless skin with minimal effort? That is the result you can achieve with our super size resurface and reveal anti aging system. philosophy has put together this dynamic duo of a weekly resurfacing peel and our top performer miracle worker moisturizer. Spend just minutes a week with the peel to reveal and resurface your complexion to a glow you never thought could be achieved with an in home product. Next use miracle worker moisturizer daily. Power-packed with our best antiaging technology, miracle worker leaves your skin more youthful-looking and vibrant. microdelivery peel and miracle worker moisturizer have always been at the top of my all time favorites for skin care. I can’t wait to show you this truly winning combination!

Heidi Guest:
In January, Mari Lyn and I had the opportunity to speak with QVC hosts about this super-size resurface & reveal anti-aging system. It was a virtual love fest as we talked about the virtues of each product, both individually and collectively. If there ever was a dynamic duo, this is it. If you have ever wanted to learn about makeup-optional skin and the philosophy brand, the time is now. You're going to love the way you look.

Along with the QVC hosts, everyone at philosophy loves these two iconic performers. The microdelivery peel is something I’ve relied on for over five years, long before I began working for philosophy. I’ll never forget the first time I used it. After just one treatment, my skin was glowing. Over time, I began to discover that "makeup optional skin" was not just a great marketing phrase but instead, a reality. The vitamin C treatment not only provides a sensorial experience; it's like going to a spa once a week in the comfort of your own home. You emerge not only glowing but feeling uplifted…like you did something good for yourself.

Who doesn't want to perfect and resurface the look and feel of their skin? The idea of renewing your skin and bringing forth the best version of itself is not only compelling in concept but attainable for anyone, no matter what your skin type. With our microdelivery peel, you can help recapture that youthful-looking glow for yourself. It was this year's QVC Customer Choice Award Winner for Best Peel for a reason: it works!

miracle worker miraculous anti-aging moisturizer performs miracles on my skin daily. I have come to rely on this silky formula to reveal a moisturized, luminous, and smoother-looking texture on a daily basis. It is the gift i give most friends who are celebrating special birthdays who yearn to revitalize a dull complexion and combat the look of aging. The best birthday gift I can give them is their glow back and this is exactly what miracle worker does. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Try this super-sized duo and experience the miracle of ageless skin for yourself. After all, the best cosmetic IS great looking skin.

Mari Lyn Meier:
How good can your skin look? If you think your skin looks good now, wait until you try this system.

When I first came to philosophy, I thought I had pretty good skin. When I first used the microdelivery peel, my skin began its journey to GREAT skin! I'm so happy we are offering this peel in this collection because it is for everyone. That is, anyone who wants her skin to look better. Your skin will transform from dull, rough, and lifeless to smooth-looking and radiant. Your skin feels as soft as a baby's bottom to touch, after 1 application. Oh, and it's super easy: 2 steps just once a week. I bet you will catch yourself looking in the mirror more and touching your skin. And, you'll look forward to your peel day every week. Since it's supersized, you will have plenty of peels to take you though June. To add that much-needed hydration that skin craves during these colder and drier months, our miracle worker moisturizer answers the call. It feels silky-smooth, and nourishes like no other moisturizer we have. Yes, it too, is for everyone! Especially those concerned about aging. Personally, my skin became more even and softer than I ever thought it could.

We couldn't have you peel and moisturize without cleaning the skin first, so we have included our little box of miracles. purity is a philosophy girl's favorite way to cleanse. If you haven't tried it yet, now is your chance. I like to use the miracle worker lactic-acid cleanser in the evening after I cleanse with purity and use as a mask once a week. Of course, our eyes are the windows to the soul, so we wanted to give you our best anti-aging eye balm to help fight those wrinkles.

These products together can help improve the appearance of your skin for the better…even if you think it already looks pretty good!

Enjoy your new beautiful skin!
xoxo

Creating a Hairstyle for New York Fashion Week

I love New York Fashion Week. It gives the city such a fun energy and the shows are always so inspiring to see. This year, I styled the hair for the DANNIJO Fall/Winter 2014 Presentation. The theme of the show was coined "BOXERina." It was brought to life with a boxing ring, beautiful ballet dancers, dramatic hair, and the amazing collection of DANNIJO jewelry.

Sarah Fashion Week

My vision behind the hair focused on marrying the graceful nature of a ballerina and the tough appearance of a boxer. I also wanted to create a look that was flattering from all angles and could stay together through a two-hour performance. I created a funky faux hawk with my Wrap-Up and Half-Up. Check out my behind-the-scenes and how-to photos below.

The show was amazing and I had so much fun styling all the wonderful dancers. It was also really special to work with another sister-run company. I hope you enjoy!

Spring 2014 brings a whole new look on style. The best words I can use to describe it are neat, fresh and free. The hair should appear shapely and soft, beautiful but simple, loose but styled.  This is what inspired the look I create for Antonella this season.

For her hair color I chose two shades to blend out her existing hi lights; a deep chocolate brown and caramel brown shade to match Antonella’s super sweet personality!  I worked with one of my lead stylist Patty, who does Antonella’s hair when I’m not in town, or busy at the Q. She methodically alternated with each color section by section to create the beautiful hues of brown throughout her new style, it reminds me of torte shell.

As for her new haircut, I started by creating a perfect length that would still look very feminine for Antonella but have a little more of the diva drama she also loves by creating a very strong blunt bottom line 5 inches shorter. The perfect new length I chose was about an inch below the collar bone and I cut at a 30 degree angle so her new look would have a lot of movement and swing.

Once I began cutting sections from the part my angle was closer to 75 degrees and I was point cutting these sections because it creates a more lightness to the style that blunt cutting does not and I pulled the part line up to cut because both techniques  create more lift on top, because my girl Antonella loves her lift!

Then I sprayed on Calista Tools Embellish Expand to give her extra fullness, shine and style before I blew dry it. I then repointed the slight graduation and re blunted the bottom line. I dry cut 100% of the time, even if I wet cut first, because that’s how it becomes perfect and extends how long the haircut lasts.

To finish Antonella’s new rocking look I used Calista Tools Embellish Volume for great volume, list, texture and hold. Taking a section 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick, spray from root to end, a little heavier in the root for my bling girl, hold 5 seconds and then worked my way through all the sections of her hair. Then I took my Perfecter and created a soft wave in the front and flipped the ends up and VIOLA! GORGOIS!!!!!

Reach out if you have any questions…hope you get a chance to get an inspiring new look for the Spring too!

Ingredients:

1 cup toasted coconut

1 cup toasted gluten free oats

1 cup toasted large chopped pecans

1 cup raisins

1 cup crushed potato chips

2 1/12 cups chocolate chips

3 tbsp Crisco

Directions:

Melt the chocolate chips and the Crisco together until no lumps remain. Add all the remaining ingredients to the melted choc chips. Stir until all ingredients are coated. Drop by tablespoon on cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Let set (cool) until firm.

*You do not have to toast 1st 3 ingredients I like taste better

**If you want you can melt the choc chips with 3 tablespoons peanut butter and 1 tablespoon Crisco for a different flavor.

Fashion is not all about clothes...in my opinion, it is the "total package" - hair, make-up, jewelry, clothes and, of course, ATTITUDE!  {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Today as we recognize our favorite "Fashion Friends", I wanted to call out my amazing friend and hair stylist, Maria McCool.  Since so many of you have complimented me on my new hairstyle and asked for more information about how I achieved the look, I asked Maria to break it down for you - step-by-step. Being the sweetheart that she is, she said "Of course!"  Enjoy!  XOXO {#emotions_dlg.thumbup} A

Our Home Away From Home in Puerto Rico & Valentine's Day

There’s no doubt that I love a good tropical vacation, but escaping New York during this crazy winter is twice as nice! Goodbye 54 inches of snow. In the past year we have visited Puerto Rico three times, making it our go-to for great food, reliably beautiful weather, relaxation, and not to mention a short and direct flight from JFK.

The moment we arrived last weekend, my 21 month old son Ashvin started screaming “Blue skies, blue skies!” which really goes to show how gloomy and cold it has been in New York for the past couple of months. Check out the swaying palm trees!

resort

My mom keeps telling me that we should leave Ashvin with her and my dad and enjoy some couple time away from our son. Somehow, we just CAN’T do it. While it would be fabulous to travel with carry on luggage and enjoy couple time at the pool we feel like our son enjoys our trips more than we do. His smiles and laughs during every trip make all the extra work worthwhile.

Sometimes you see families lugging around tons of stuff for their kids to the pool, but not us. We like to pack lightly. A bunch of small books and we’re lucky to borrow or buy stuff at our hotel. For this visit, we bought Ashvin a wetsuit which means his fun in the pool lasted hours longer than usual. This was a great investment, because the pools weren’t heated and got a bit chilly. We were so happy to maximize both his and our time swimming and splashing about!

in the pool

me and manoj

As much as he loves the pool, Ashvin loves the beach even more. His favorite activities are looking for shells and rocks, jumping in the waves and hanging out with his dad as you can see from this adorable picture.

ocean

Anybody else dreaming of an island vacation? We had such a lovely time on our weekend excursion, Ashvin slept the whole way home. He was exhausted! But I felt revived and ready to tackle this crazy weather all over again.

We got back and rekindled our romance for  Valentine’s day. Manoj got us a couple massage at home. It was FABULOUS and a wonderful end to our weekend. I got him tickets to Mama Mia and we’re seeing it this weekend. What did you do for Valentine’s day?

Speaking of parties, Jill Bauer and I will be joined by a live audience for two hours at 4:00pm.  I’m so excited to spend time with so many of our collector friends.  Tune in, you may recognize some familiar faces!  At 8:00pm, Jane and I will celebrate with a two hour finale!!  I can only hope I am still making sense.  I apologize in advance if I get a little punchy!

I am so excited that the time has finally come to celebrate spring and color!  I’ll be premiering 35 new designs throughout the day, and mixing and matching them with many of your favorites!

I would love to hear how you plan to freshen up your fashion with some new colorful pieces!

I hope you’ll join me, beginning at midnight for a very special Today’s Special Value, and throughout the biggest Carolyn Pollack Sterling Jewelry event of the year!!!

With love and joy!

A Visit to the Southwest...and to the Heart of a TSV!

Gabby and I had been pondering where to go on vacation for months…Texas? Louisiana? Or our all-time favorite, Way out West??

After a lot of thought we settled on New Mexico. We’d visited Colorado many times, but we had never spent time in the Land of Enchantment. It occurred to me this might also be a great opportunity to learn more about one of our QVC designers, Carolyn Pollack! I took a chance that she might be in town while Gabby and I were there. And as luck would have it, she and Bill were delighted to give us a tour!

Once we were settled in, we visited with Carolyn and learned all about the hard work behind the creation of all her pieces. But during this visit, all of the 200 employees were focused on one item and one item alone: the Today’s Special Value bracelet!

Carolyn and her team took us on a tour: we viewed hand sketches where inspiration first becomes physical reality, saw computer models that transformed those ideas into three dimensions, watched as castings were created first in resin and then in hot liquid metal, and marveled as craftsmen and women with more patience than I’ll ever have painstakingly polished, perfected, and hand-placed all the gemstones in these gorgeous pieces.

Did you know that this is what the TSV looks like before it becomes a creation in silver??

Everyone I spoke to was proud to show me their work. They invited Gabby and I to give jewelry making a try! And while we both had a blast getting our hands dirty participating in the process, more importantly we left with an even stronger knowing that every person in that workshop deserves the highest praise for the perseverance and pride in their work that happens on a daily basis.

One of us should NOT be this close to a machine that holds molten silver. Hint: that person is me.

Gabby and I call this part "bobbing for baubles!" It's where the jewelry is bathed and beautified.

Every time I wear the Today’s Special Value (I chose Lapis), I’ll look down and not just marvel at the beauty of the piece itself, I’ll give thanks to so many people who make it their life’s mission to help women across the country feel beautiful, and make them smile if only for a moment as they glance down at the work of art on their wrist.

You’ll also see a few “outtakes” from an afternoon excursion we took later in our trip. Carolyn, Gabby and I got fitted for cowgirl hats (Gabby’s favorite part), and Carolyn even helped me pick out a dress for our upcoming American West show!!

Gabby and I also toured downtown Albuquerque and Santa Fe, took a trip on the world’s longest tramway (eek!), ate fabulous Southwestern food and bonded as mommy and daughter. I thank YOU for reading and sharing a glimpse of our vacay! And I hope you’ll tune in February 21st at 9am as Carolyn and I take you through more beautiful pieces from her collection!
