Quiche Lorraine--in Photos! What Do You Think?

Hello, foodies…

Happy April and Happy National Grilled Cheese Month! I wish you could see the glee on my face right now, foodies. There's an entire month dedicated to the ooey, gooey, incredible grilled cheese sandwich. (And I didn't even make it up!)

Now, we were all set to create eight different grilled cheese sandwiches this month, but we thought it would be even more fun to celebrate the sandwich's best ingredient: cheese. So, we're deeming April "Cheese Month" on ITKWD. And, we're celebrating cheeses from around the world! Here's the very first recipe:Quiche Lorrainefrom Switzerland!

Quiche Lorraine

This recipe is prepared with the Kuhn Rikon 8" & 10" Silicone Rainbow Whisk Set (K35774).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

1 9" store-bought refrigerated pie dough
10 slices bacon, chopped into 1/2" pieces
1/3 cup onion, chopped
1-1/4 cup Emmentaler cheese, shredded
4 large eggs
1-2/3 cups heavy whipping cream
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground white pepper
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 cup fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped

Directions:

Position an oven rack at the bottom of the oven and preheat to 400°F.

Unroll the pie dough and press it into the bottom and sides of a lightly greased 9" deep-dish pie plate. Crimp the edges. Poke holes into the bottom with a fork and bake for 12 minutes; set aside.

Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F.

Cook the bacon until crisp in a large skillet set over medium heat. Remove the bacon from the skillet with a slotted spoon and place it onto a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Discard all but 2 tablespoons of the bacon fat from the pan and add the chopped onion. Cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the bacon, onion, and shredded cheese into the par-baked pie shell.

Whisk together the eggs, cream, salt, white pepper, nutmeg, and parsley in a medium-size bowl. Pour the mixture evenly over the bacon, onions, and cheese. Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until a knife inserted 2-1/2" from the edge comes out clean and is light golden brown in color.

Let the quiche sit for 15 minutes before cutting and serving.

Now, as promised, here's how you make the recipe, step-by-step:

While optional, it's helpful to roll out pre-made dough a bit to ensure it fits your pie plate. It also helps ensure you crimps are even.
Fold the dough in half before removing it from the counter. Center it over the pie plate and then unfold. You'll always have it perfectly centered that way.
Depending on how thinly you roll the dough (or if you're making crust from scratch), you might have excess. Trim it instead of making high crimps, as they're likely to fold over off the plate during baking.
Poking holes (docking) into the bottom of the crust prevents air pockets from getting underneath the crust.
Perfect!
I wish you could smell this!
Mix well...
Then layer the ingredients like a pizza, ending with the egg mixture.

 Bake for 12 minutes.
Voila!

For your blog question today, tell me what you think of all these photos? Do you find them helpful? Would you like to see more blogs like this? Thanks for your feedback, as always. I'll see you on Wednesday at 8pm ET.

Keep it flavorful!

Dad's Italian Supper - A Legendary Family Favorite!

Both of my dad's parents came to America from Italy, so his family Italian suppers were legendary! Here is his all-day slow-cooked supper - along with my favorite picture of my dad and me.

Dad's Italian Supper

Ingredients:

3 lbs baby baked ribs
1 lb Italian sausage (hot or sweet)

2 hard-boiled eggs
Chicken legs (one per person!)
28 oz tomato sauce
Fresh basil, about 4 leaves
Salt and pepper
1/2 tsp sugar
1 tsp Italian seasoning

Directions:

In a large skillet with a little olive oil, brown the baby back ribs and cut into individual portions. Brown the sausage and chicken legs. Add to large Crock-Pot with the sauce, seasonings, sugar, and fresh basil. Next, add the cooked hard-boiled eggs. Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 8. (You can also add your favorite meatball recipe to this, browning the meatballs before adding to the sauce. You may also need more than one Crock-Pot or you can just divide everything in half.)

Serve with fresh spaghetti cooked al dente, a salad to start off with, and crusty Italian bread. The sauce is amazing–so make enough for leftovers! The eggs are a family tradition. We used to fight over them, so you can add more if you want. Enjoy!

The Power of a Diamond

$

Have you ever wondered why diamonds are the gemstone commemorating April, the first month of spring? What about the meaning of a diamond in an engagement ring or important gift of love? Diamonds are symbolic of endurance and renewal, of rarity, strength and transformation. What begins its life as a fairly common element is subjected to the most extraordinary heat and pressure for a significant period of time, and as a result of this extreme environment, transforms from a common element into a rare and unique gem with astonishing strength and sparkle.  As a result, diamonds aren’t just coveted for their beauty or value, they have become one of the most powerful and emotionally charged gifts that we can give to another, or give to ourselves.

When giving the gift of a diamond to another, the connotation of message is sparklingly clear. “Out of anything I could give, I choose to give one of the most rare and enduring elements on earth." In some instances this may signify the rarity, endurance or renewal of a relationship. When giving a diamond to oneself, it may be a reminder of an event or period that has tested our strength, endurance and resolve, but from which we have emerged stronger and more resilient than before, ready to begin a new phase or journey in our life.

April is Diamond Month at QVC so there are a number of exciting events geared toward those who love the beauty and significance of diamond jewelry. We have shows planned that will reveal new styles incorporating the hottest new trends, vintage inspirations, and impressive “milestone” pieces to be collected and given for very special occasions.   Here’s a sample of some things you’ll see:

J279644

If winter has tested your endurance, this is a perfectly whimsical reminder that spring has finally arrived. This generously sized butterfly (¾” X ¾”), J279644 with ½ cttw of blue and white diamonds will not only warm your heart, but will seemingly “dance” in the rays of the sun. It’s the perfect self reward for doing that extra bit of planting, sticking to your new years resolution, or simply making it through winter with a smile.

 J279626

Add this classic diamond ½ cttw line-style band in 14K gold to your fashion stack.  J279626, is perfect if you love band styles. For those who are planning a gift of love this is the most brilliant way to commemorate an anniversary and say you’d do it all over again, or show how happy you are to enter you new life with this dazzler snuggled up against her engagement ring as a sparkling wedding band.

J280391

The ultimate “milestone” piece is a coveted diamond bracelet that can be worn everyday. J280391 already has an impressive total carat weight but it’s constructed in a very special way. Each diamond “link” is actually comprised of a carefully constructed cluster of diamonds that gives the appearance of a quarter carat solitaire. This WOW bracelet looks like you’re wearing over 10 carats on your wrist! It’s available in 7” or 8” so the actual carat weight will vary depending upon your size. Major birthday? Anniversary? Promotion? This is a milestone that you’ll want to celebrate!

Tell us what you love about Affinity!

Whether you love the idea of giving diamond jewelry to someone you love, rewarding yourself with beautiful diamonds, or simply just love the gem, we’d love to hear your story. Tell us what you love about Affinity Diamond Jewelry. One lucky winner will receive a pair of Affinity Diamond ½ cttw halo design stud earrings in 14K gold and another lucky winner will receive an Affinity diamond ¼ cttw framed emerald shaped ring set in 14K gold.  Join the fun of Diamond Month!

I know that many of you write notes to me via this blog, unfortunately I’m not able to answer you in this format. However, you can "like" me on facebook at Michael O’Connor QVC or Michael O’Connor Style, or if you’re on twitter follow me at @stylingspy. There’s lots of fun to be had this month. Don’t miss out!

Over the past 3 years, I have been a jewelry stylist for John Hardy.  I have traveled extensively, offering my expertise as a personal stylist to our legion of John Hardy collectors across the country.  I am now joining as a jewelry stylist for JAI John Hardy, a jewelry collection created especially for QVC.  The same service that I offer all of my John Hardy collectors, I will now offer to each of you.

My experience as a jewelry stylist and knowledge of the latest trends will allow me to introduce and share with you all the exciting ways to wear JAI.

Meaning "heart" in Thai and "goodness" in Hindi, JAI is inspired by these qualities which are inherent to the passion and traditions of the local craftsmen.  JAI is inspired by the motifs and stories that influence life, aesthetics, and experiences across diverse destinations as far reaching as India, the Arabian Peninsula, and Southeast Asia.

Each collection is a reflection of a specific journey that I have experienced in my travels and the unique details that I have discovered along the way.  My journey will become your journey, their stories will become your stories, and together we will bring the new JAI John Hardy collections to life!

Our journey together starts today, so pack your bags and get ready because we are going to the beautiful islands of Bali and exotic Thailand!  ‘Bali Lanna’ and ‘Sukhothai’ are the first two collections curated especially for you.  This season, it's all about stacking and making statements with your jewelry.  I have chosen stunning stackable hinged cuffs and bangles, everyday chic earrings, jewel-encrusted necklaces, and beautiful gemstone rings.  These are just some of the treasures that I am bringing to each of you this month, only available through QVC.com.

I look forward to meeting each of you in this journey together.  Please feel free to contact me through our QVC blog, on the JAI Jewelry Facebook page to introduce yourself, or follow me @JAIJewelry on Twitter.  Let me know where we should go next on our travels, what styles you are missing from your jewelry collection, or what piece you have always been looking for but have yet to find.  You never know, your request may be the next inspiration that you see on the Q!

Safe travels,

Scott Grimes

Thanks for great March shows... and more Spring picks!

Dear Friends,

A huge thanks to each and every one of you who tuned into the Judith Ripka Collection March shows!  Judith and I, and our entire family (including QVC, of course!), greatly appreciate your support.

We all enjoyed a wonderful show weekend, and what made it even more special was the great response we received to Judie’s TSV, theSterling or 14K Clad Braided Double Row Bracelet (J279920).

Inspired by Judie’s Gotham bracelet from her 18K couture collection, it embodies both the elegance and edge of New York City.  The combination of classic, sophisticated sterling with the braided look of leather strikes the perfect balance between uptown’s fashion flair and downtown’s street chic.

As I shared on-air, this TSV is and has always been one of my favorite go-to bracelets to wear every day.  I always feel that the look of leather adds a fashion-forward look when I mix and match my jewelry.  Since I heard that some of you are having trouble with the clasp, I wanted to share some helpful tips on how to open and close the bracelet.  It took me a few times to learn how to open and close it with ease, but it's now just a part of my every day routine!  It is sincerely one of the most comfortable bracelets I own, and I think that part of that is due to the fact that the material Judie used for this bracelet   is the same that she used for her couture version.  The material is soft and flexible, and the more you wear it, the more it custom fits to your wrist.

Since the first item on my “Spring Top Picks” represents "everyday elegance," I wanted to switch gears with my second pick connoting a "cocktail couture" look and feel.  To me, “cocktail couture” means a piece of jewelry that feels dressier, as if you would wear it to a cocktail party.  If you want to feel as glamorous as you look, this Spring, indulge yourself in the Sterling Estate Pia Emerald Baguette Ring (J279179).

This piece was also inspired by Judith’s 18K couture collection and features Emerald bagette cut gemstones which is on trend with green being the “Pantone Color of the Year.”  To round out my top 3 “Spring Picks,” I am also  recommending the coordinating Sterling Silver Emerald Estate Pia Cuff (J279473).

In addition to the sheer beauty of a rich emerald hue, I have always thought that the color green often acts as a neutral and coordinates with so much that it can also become a good accent color.  Many of my friends have told me that they are drawn to the color green, and I am, too!  And, as Judith shared in her last blog, since Emerald is the birthstone for May, she plans on debuting additional NEW pieces featuring this gemstone.  Therefore, these two Estate-inspired pieces will be great to lay the foundation for your collection.

For find out about more of my Spring Picks, please LIKE me on Facebook!  I will also, of course, be blogging again before Judie and I come back to the Q in May.

Until then, wishing you the start to a beautiful Spring!

Much love,

Allison

It’s Been A Busy Year So Far! See Some Behind-the-Scenes Photos and My Tips On How To Look and Feel Your Best!

This year has gotten off to quite a busy start not only for LOGO by Lori Goldstein but for our New York based studio as well!

We kicked off Fashion Week by styling Dennis Basso's Fall/Winter 2013 collection for his 30th anniversary runway show at Lincoln Center. Dennis is such a talented designer, and it was a pleasure to collaborate with him and push him to break some of his own rules! It was a nice surprise to see some of my QVC family and friends backstage and in the audience. Here are some behind-the-scenes photos from Dennis' show:

David Dangle and me

 Me, Dennis, and Courtney Cason

Joan Rivers and Dennis

Then it was on to Paris where we styled the Maiyet Fall/Winter 2013 runway show. I love Maiyet's mission statement and philosophy, so working with their team is always a joy, and who doesn't love Paris! I also had a chance to do some inspirational shopping for LOGO!

In addition to shows, my first two issues of Elle Magazine came out in March and now, April! Click below to see each one.

March 2013

April 2013

It's easy to get caught up in your work, and sometimes we forget to take a moment for yourself. Spring is finally coming around, and it's that perfect time to focus on looking and feeling your best. It's time to show a little more skin, pull out your Spring wardrobe, and reinvent yourself! Here are some of my favorite tips for looking and feeling your best:

•Spring is about COLoR! Soften up your winter palate and try something new. Start by incorporating a saturated Spring hue or a dusty pastel into a more neutral look. You'd be surprised how just a small pop of color can brighten up your mood.

•Reinvent yourself, even if ever so slightly. Try experimenting with a new haircut or hairstyle. Try a new, lighter hair color for Spring. If the thought of that scares you, then try switching up your hair products. Opt for a fresh, floral Spring scent like gardenia.

•Nourish and protect your skin. Coming off of a long Winter leaves the skin pale and dry. Start with a nice self tanner for a Spring time glow and make sure to protect and nourish the skin with sunscreen and moisturizer.

I just love the newness of Springtime, and I've been SO excited to bring all of LOGO's fresh, new silhouettes, colors, and prints to QVC. Additionally, this Spring I am pleased to introduce you all to Danny, who works closely with me on LOGO in my New York studio. Danny will be joining me on air at the Q, and we will be interacting with all of you on Facebook and Twitter.

Danny and me

Be sure to join us on April 8th beginning at midnight for QVC’s Look Your Best event, as we will have surprises for you throughout the day: new silhouettes, new prints, and new colors of your favorite, top-rated pieces!

What do you do or what helps you to look your best? Let me know in the comments section below. I’d love to hear from you!

xx,

Lori

Aimee Kestenberg in the Making

I received a lot of questions about my background and where I started, so I thought I would give you all a quick snapshot of my life up to this point.

I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. My love for art, fashion and accessories really started at a very young age. My grandmother was an expert seamstress and my grandfather was a jeweler. When I was 5 years old I learned sewing, pattern making and jewelry making. Spending many hours a day with my grandparents, I was taught to master each of these skills. For my 7th birthday my grandmother gave me her old sewing machine and from then on I began to sew with her everyday and make my own clothes and accessories.

At the age of 12 my father, an Australian giftware importer, took me under his wing and began teaching me the ins and outs of the importing business. I traveled with my father non-stop over the next few years spending time in Hong Kong, Indonesia and Thailand, learning his trade and assisting him with buying and exhibiting at giftware tradeshows all over the world.

I am always driven and inspired by my big, beautiful family in Australia.

When I graduated high school I was accepted into Industrial Design at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology where I majored in product design and engineering. Although this course did not have much to do with “fashion” it taught me to think in 3D and gave me the skills to not only focus on the aesthetics of an object but to understand and master the importance of functionality, durability, usability and ergonomics.

I've always been fascinated by the ways things worked..."

During my studies, the popular TV show Project Runway was taking place at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and aired in Australia, quickly becoming a fashion phenomenon. I was fascinated with the idea of New York and made it my mission to find a way to attend Parsons The New School for Design to further my studies in Fashion. After a rigorous and challenging year of preparing my submission, I finally received the letter--“Welcome to Parsons”! It was one of the happiest and most fulfilling days of my life. I had two weeks to pack up life and move to New York City.

While attending Parsons, I completed design internships as well as designed runway collections for various luxury brands, some of which include Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi Couture, Sass & Bide, Jill Stuart and Alexander McQueen.

While working for particular brands, I found that I was constantly faced with roadblocks when trying to push the limits with creativity. I was working in environments where creativity couldn’t flourish and this was something I needed to change.

My training as both an industrial and accessory designer has given me the skills necessary to design and build beautiful accessories in an innovative and functional way. My 3-D vision of objects really gives me the ability to create product, not only for its aesthetic look, but also for its function which is the magic combination for today’s modern woman.

My aim is to continuously push the limits in design and creation..."

I decided to take a risk and leave the company where I was working to begin focusing all of my attention on designing the first collection for my namesake brand, Aimee Kestenberg. I turned the living room of my apartment into a design studio and had handbags, sketches, boards, leather swatches EVERYWHERE in the apartment! I could barely move! It was such an inspiring but stressful time for me. I designed the entire Spring season out of my apartment and put my heart and soul into the launch of the brand. I was incredibly fortunate with the reaction, being picked up by QVC, Nordstrom, Macys just to name a few, as well as specialty stores across 20 States and 3 Countries.

I hope that you feel like you know me a little better now, especially because you'll be seeing more of me around the Q! I'll be back with an hour show in May, so be sure to tune in to see my latest bags. I'll also be continuing to write blogs, so keep checking back to follow me on this new, exciting chapter in my life! In the meantime, check out my full collection here.

xoxo,

Aimee

Global Traveler Style - Lisa Shares her Tips for Packing for Vacation

$

Any day now it’s going to warm up, and we’re going to start thinking of summer vacations. This takes a lot of preparation in the "what am I going to take?" department, doesn’t it? It’s amazing that no matter how concise you think your packing is, you still end up wearing only half of what you brought. One trick to wearing what you pack is to take things you like to wear. I know it seems silly, but if you don't like the T-shirt at home, you probably won't like it on vacation. Finding clothes that you would wear at home and that you can take on vacation is the best way to go. Now, if those clothes multi-task, you're golden!

Enter...the convertible maxi dress. This dress is based on one I own and love. It’s a dress that I wear on days when I’m comfortable with a lower neckline. But, I also found that I can put a bandeau bra under it on days when I didn't want a lower neckline. (This worked because the dress was black.) And, I can wear it anywhere. When we made this dress for the G.I.L.I.(TM) line, we made the bandeau bra in the same material, so you can wear it with or without it. This means that running around during the day, you can wear the bandeau bra with it, and in the evening you can put on big earrings or a statement necklace, wear the neckline lower, and "voila!” You look fabulous! You can also throw a cute jean jacket or layering piece over it, which is perfect as sometimes you need more coverage if you are going into churches, etc. It’s the perfect dress for travel or home.

The lace G.I.L.I. blouse is a piece that flew out when we first offered it and is one of the few pieces we were able to bring back. This is a piece that multitasks because you can wear it with a cami and jeans, as I do quite often or if you want to look nice, but casual (think sightseeing). You can also wear it with jeans, high wedges, and cute jewelry and dress it up for a lunch or semi-casual dinner. Or, put it with a skirt and go fairly dressy if you’re going to a very nice restaurant for dinner. This means one piece takes you a lot of places and you don't have to pack as much. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

The peasant-style blouse is nice, as it’s a finished look, but it can also be casual. If you’re going somewhere where there’s a lot of air conditioning, you’ll want something that’s finished, respectful, has your arms covered, and is comfortable at the same time. This blouse will work beautifully.

I find that when I travel, I’m not dressing up a lot. Most travel destinations cater to the casual traveler, but that doesn't mean you want to look like you just rolled out of bed. We all feel better when we feel like we look nice. (And don’t forget those vacation photos will haunt you forever!) Sad but true. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

You don’t need a separate wardrobe for travel, just a multitasking one that you love when you’re home as well.

See you Friday night at 10pm ET, as always, we’ll have more than just great fashion!

—Lisa

Introducing the Blue Lotus Collection!

Hi Everyone!

I’m really excited about Spring and seeing the first crocuses of the season bloom in my garden, as they did this past weekend, and it always makes me smile.  My family and friends laugh at me sometimes because I’ll drag them outside to see the same perennial I showed them last year when it starts to bloom.  I think the variety of shapes and colors of all the different flowers is miraculous - like little works of art magically appearing from the dirt!

My garden has become such an important part of my life and beyond the beauty of the flowers I’ve found many things about my garden that mimic life in general and the things that I’ve learned along life’s journey.  When we first moved from a city apartment to my current home, I knew nothing about cultivating a garden or even how to begin!  I’m certainly no expert now, but the satisfaction that I get from nurturing the flowers, the incredible inspiration that has come from the unique beauty of each flower as it opens and even the lesson of the impermanence of things and appreciating the moment are all part of what attracts me there.  I‘ve even come to love "rescuing" plants that I come across which you know just need some cutting back, attention, water, and the chance to regenerate.

Lotuses are not something that thrive in my area, but I have been lucky enough to see many of these beautiful flowers throughout Asia.  I would surmise that the symbolism, important to so many cultures, came from similar observations - something so beautiful and perfect growing from the mud.

I am thrilled to share my new Blue Lotus Collection with all of you at QVC on The Lisa Robertson Show tomorrow night,April 5th, at 10pm.  I hope you will all tune-in and share in my excitement for the season and my passion for the Blue Lotus Collection.

Happy Spring XOXO

Barbara
