Spring Break Means Fun with PEEPS and Easter Treats

0
0

After a beautiful weekend of temperatures in the 80's --- one last blast of cold (hopefully) pounced on us with a very late April Fools Joke!

That didn't stop me and Theresa from taking some time to make something fun, crafty, colorful AND yummy!  We made a few tasty treats for Easter out of PEEPS!

In case you weren't aware, PEEPS are made in Bethlehem, PA --- right up the road from QVC!  (Hmmm...I sense the need for a field trip!)

Which is your favorite Peep?
The traditional Peep Chick or the Peep Bunny?

Theresa and I got out all of the ingredients for our first tasty treat: PEEP KABOBS!

*You'll need wooden skewers

*Mixture of fruit (choose your favorites or a variety for color.)

*Peep Bunnies (Pick your favorite color OR more than one color to add more color to your kabob!)

Unfortunately our season fruit isn't looking as colorful as fruit in the directions -> http://thefrugalgirls.com/2013/03/peeps-fruit-kabobs.html

But we had FUN anyway!!!  What a great treat after an Easter Egg Hunt!

------------------

Then we HAD to make PEEPS BUNNY RACECARS!

To make ONE car you will need:

*Twinkie style cake
*2 Large Marshmallows
*1 Peep Bunny
*1 mini traditional pretzel

Cut out a compartment in the Twinkie for the bunny to be able to sit in the "Racecar".

Cut a notch out in front of the bunny to inset the pretzel steering wheel.  Push down into the cake to secure.

Cut each large marshmallow in half.  Attach the sticky sides to the side of the "Racecar" as wheels!

Vroom vroom!!!

Complete directions here -> http://www.freefuneaster.com/easter-recipes/easter-bunny-racecars/

(We didn't use the frosting to adhere the bunny or the wheels - the marshmallows and the cream from the Twinkies were enough for ours to hold!)

---------------

I may have created a monster with our last treat!!!  Theresa loved this!

PEEPS S'MORES!!!

*Graham Crackers
*Bar of chocolate
*Peeps Chicks

We assembled the graham cracker and chocolate on a plate.  The we added the poor, unsuspecting Peep on top.  AND THEN ....... Put it in the microwave for a few seconds until it tripled in size ... then smushed the top graham cracker on top!  Voila!

Full directions here ->  http://thefrugalgirls.com/2013/03/peeps-smores.html

YUMMY!!!  What a fun Spring twist on s'mores!

Then we had fun and just put a couple of PEEPS Bunnies in the microwave!  It's fun to watch them puff up so quickly!

Do you have any fun Spring / Easter treats you love to make?  Share your recipes below or please post then on my Facebook page -> www.facebook.com/JacqueQVC :)

Have a Happy & Blessed Easter!

Hoping it's a beautiful Spring for ALL OF US!!!

Easter: A Time of Rebirth, New Beginnings, and Hope

Happy Easter!

Easter is very special to me.  It is a time of rebirth, new beginnings and hope. It was my Grandma Dooley’s favorite holiday. My Grandma lived for her family, and treasured her “ladies” as she called the many women who were welcome to walk right through her unlocked door with their sewing needs.  My Grandma was a gifted seamstress, and this is how she made her “pin” money, as my mom calls spending money.  On Easter, this money went to buy all 18 grandchildren a special box of candies from the Fanny Farmer store at the mall.  This was quite a treat, I always looked forward to the butterscotch lollipop included in this special assortment.

I miss my Grandma Dooley, and can still feel her soft hand as she held mine in church.  She let me play with her charm bracelets, one gold with eighteen charms engraved with her grandchildren’s names, and the other silver with 27 great grandchildren’s charms.  When the sermon went on a little too long for my attention span, playing with these charms was my way of thanking God for my family, and looking forward to gathering together at Grandma’s for a rousing game of wiffle ball or football. Grandma never forgot a birthday, never missed a baptism, graduation, or wedding. And she kept up with the crowds while shopping on Black Friday, spending an entire day at the Minnesota State Fair, or sitting on the curb for the Minneapolis Aquatennial Parade. She loved family traditions, and we all have countless fond memories thanks to Grandma Dooley. She was everything we could dream of in a grandmother.

At this time of year, I count the blessings in my life, among them are three grandchildren of my own, Easter Lily, Ivo Sol, and Grace Lynne.  I am also grateful for your friendship and the joy you bring to my life.  I look forward to spending time with you on April 17th as we celebrate this beautiful season.  The spirit of rebirth and renewal has inspired the new designs in my shows. Turquoise is a gemstone known for uplifting the spirit, and this spring it seems to be popping up everywhere in fashion and design. I can’t wait to share my newest Sleeping Beauty turquoise pieces with you, because you deserve only the finest genuine turquoise!  And I cannot wait to debut my dragonfly collection, which has taken eight months to perfect! In many cultures, the dragonfly is a symbol of change, poise, and balance.  A beautiful aspiration, I think.

I’m excited to spend time with my dear friend Nancy Hornback and our new host Alberti, who is an absolute gem, from 1-3 am.  And from 1-3pm, it’s the return of “Carolyn Squared” as we like to say when I’m on air with Carolyn Gracie!  What a joy!

Happy Easter!

Love,

Carolyn

8) Why Are The Leaves On My Plants Turning Yellow?

The good news is your plant just may be going through its natural growth process by yellowing its leaves and shedding them.  The other good news is your plant is telling you something is wrong by yellowing.  And more times than not, diagnosing your plant like a doctor with a patient’s symptoms can be clear-cut.  Could it be...

Change of location? This is the first question to ask.  Like most people, plants like their areas and are accustomed to it.  If the new area is too light or lacks light, the plant in its defense will drop their leave in order to grow new that can adapt to the conditions.  Consider moving the plant back to its original spot, if it was thriving there.  Or if this isn’t possible, such as you’ve moved, then keep a watchful eye and give your plant time to acclimate.  It may just be as simple as this.

Limited Light? Does your plant have yellowing on the lower leaves?  Check to see if the yellowing leaves are on the side of the plant not in the direct light, then there is the problem.  Oftentimes too, plants next to a window shed leaves because of shorter days and will have a growth spurt when days get longer.

Cold Conditions? Have you moved your plant recently into a drafty area or has it experienced an unusual blast of cold weather?  Try placing the plant back to where it thrived or moving it to a warmer spot in your home with more light.   Do the opposite if you think the plant in undergoing heat conditions.

Nutrient Deficiency?  Are the top leaves yellowing?  Or do you notice yellowing in unusual patterns?  These are the tell-tale signs of deficiency.  Perhaps the plant is nitrogen deficient or you getting too much calcium in tap water.   You can also try Chelated Iron to green-up your plant.

Over Watering? When a plant gets too much water it strangles the roots and this is a major cause of yellowing.  Few plants like to have water in their trays, so water accordingly.

Overly Dry? Has your plant been missing regular watering?  Like people, plants need to drink consistently.  See if getting back onto a schedule will improve the plant health.

Insects?  If your plant leaves look yellow or burnt, it might be the result of infestation i.e. Spider Mites.  Spray a systemic insecticide provided these are not edible plants…

9) How Can I Stop Deer From Eating Everything?

Honestly, there truly is no full-proof way to prevent deer from having a bite (if there were, surely we would all own stock in it) but there are some ways to discourage these majestic but destructive animals.

Here I go again, (my blog post “It’s True – It’s Time To Prune”) but pruning and cleaning up your garden is a great place to start.  I trim the lower branches on my trees regularly because unless deer are extremely desperate, they will go find “low hanging fruit” on someone else’s property.  A yard clean of leaves, acorns and rotting fruit is like a store with empty shelves and again, the deer will move on.  Over the years so many friends and fellow gardeners have given me “solutions” to try like spreading cat litter around your property borders, placing bars of deodorant or strong smelling soap around your property and  hanging them from garden gates.  And who knew that deer do not like any “melodic” noise whether it’s wind chimes or the radio?  A great excuse to have music playing from your patio speakers all of the time!

You can also consider the many plants and shrubs that deer just don’t like.  I compare it to a restaurant that serves nothing but food you don’t eat (ok, it might be hard for me to find any restaurant with nothing I like to eat, but that’s another story all together).  Here are some ornamental varieties I like and deer unfriendly:

-Ground Covers:  Barrenwort, Pachysandra, Spotted Deadnettle, Sweet Woodruff, Lily of the Valley, Bearberry, Bugleweed.

-Perennials: Forget Me Not, Lambs Ear, Bleeding Hearts, Butter and Eggs, Tansy Statice, Peony, Hyssop, Buttercup, Basket of Gold, Catmint, and Lemon Balm.

-Bulbs:  Tulip, Autumn Crocus, Daffodil, Snowdrops.

-Ornamental Grasses:  Indian Grass, Fountain Grass, Big Bluestem, Feather Reed, Hard Rush, Blue Fescue, Blue Oat Grass.

Sorry deer, you can come over for a glimpse of my garden, but you can’t stay for dinner!

10) How Do I Prune Hydrangeas?

Even experienced gardeners have questions on when to prune hydrangeas.   And no wonder with four different species of hydrangea and hundreds of varieties!  With these mind-numbing numbers, let’s focus on two of the most popular; the Mophead (Macrophylla) and PeeGee (Paniculatas).

Mophead and Lacecap Hydrangeas - You really don’t ever have to prune a Mophead hydrangea.  But for the health of the plant, you can remove dead stems at any time of year.  If your Mophead is older than five years and too large, then you can cut back a third of the old wood after it has bloomed. Your typical Mophead blooms on the old wood so leave the shoots and only prune out any dead sticks. But there are new varieties, like one of my favorites Endless Summer, which blooms on the new and old wood.  I relish this species for many reasons; it can full-set bloom twice in a summer, which is not true of other Macrophylla, comes in pale shades of blue, lavender and pink, and is fairly prune-resistant.

Pee Gee bloom on old wood and can be pruned any time of year except summer when they are preparing to bloom.  Some of my colleagues prune back these varieties regularly right after the blooming period, yet I do not even touch these beauties until the fall. We look forward to watching the snow fall onto the blooms in the winter.  If I do feel the need to prune, the great thing is that these hydrangeas are one of the only varieties that can be trimmed into tree-form.

Both the Paniculata and Macrophylla are beautiful used in floral arrangements and the blooms dry nicely to make into dried arrangements and wreathes too.

I hope you enjoyed celebrating National Garden Month with me! Be sure to check out our Gardening Guide for all of your garden and outdoor living needs!

An Easter Twist on a Classic Treat

0
0

Most people are familiar with the classic treat S'mores, but have you heard of S'meeps? It's an Easter twist on a classic; instead of using marshmallows, peeps are used. Of course, I chose yellow, but any color will do.

S'Meeps

Ingredients:

Graham Crackers

Chocolate Bars

Peeps

Just like S'mores, a piece of chocolate is placed on a graham cracker, then add a peep and place in the microwave. Set the timer and watch closely for the peep to puff up. It only took about 20 seconds for me. Remove from the microwave and place another graham cracker on top and push it down. The warm peep will begin to melt the chocolate. Delicious!!!

Have fun and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow for AM Beauty and AM Style ...... a few surprises will be coming your way. : )

Workout clothing is a problem. For my sanity, I have to work out most days.  Not long, gym sweating, iron pumping workouts, but some movement that requires me to eventually shower that day.  I try to do this in the morning because I don’t really feel like I can enjoy the day and focus on the myriad of mommy/wife/host duties I have until my 25-90 minutes of moving is over.  If, by chance, I can’t work out in the morning, I put on my workout clothes and won’t shower or change until I’ve exercised.  As a result, many days I start and end my days a) shower-less and b) in exercise clothes.

Needless to say, workout wear makes up about half my wardrobe. My problem is I really don’t like stretch pants.  Please no lectures about being size four and being thankful, because I am, tremendously. I love my body for how strong and healthy it is and that it gave me a gorgeous little human. But, you know what, it seems like no matter what size we are, there is usually something we cringe at from time to time right?  For me it’s my hip/thigh area.  I’ll be honest…. I don’t love it. If I had a proportionate bust to even it all out, it would be a different story, but the Lord blessed me with a chest made for a runner, so again, I am thankful, yet not overly excited about it.  Anyway, stretch pants and I don’t get along.  In order to find appropriate workout pants that I can wear most days, most of the day (yes even to meetings at the Q) I usually have to spend a small fortune. I don’t believe workout pants should cost a hundred bucks. They are spandex!  Why so expensive? However if you try on the big name ones that lift your rear and make you somehow appear slimmer doing your downward dog and then try on the much less expensive ones that somehow add jiggle to your inner thighs and are nearly see through when doing said downward dog, you will shell out the extra 75 bucks every time!  So when QVC told me they had a new line of workout wear called 90 Degree by Reflex, I was excited about the cute tops and jackets but unwilling to even acknowledge a 35-dollar pair of pants.

The tops by Reflex are darling.  Great patterns and colors, including animal, which is even more popular in workout if that’s at all possible.

The jackets are even better!

Animal and fun colors, with great high-end details and ruching, and the seaming that makes you look like an hourglass goddess.  These jackets are not just for before and after your workout; they are for every day!

But the pants!  The pants are a modern apparel miracle.  I threw them on one day in a fun bright teal and expected to see puckering and dimples and rolls in the bottom and thigh area.  I assumed I would see my thighs stretch out of the too thin fabric as I cringed and grabbed for my closest tunic.  When I looked in the mirror and saw a thinner looking mama staring back, I was in shock!

I usually have to do multiple changes to find the right outfit for me to host a Zumba or Pilates show in, but not this time.  I was completely comfortable appearing on national TV in these pants and I hadn’t increased my credit card debt to get there!

Truly, I am astounded.  I have gone back online and bought all the colors in these capris and I cant wait to try the other styles too. The fact that the tops and jackets coordinate and make me look like a hipper version of myself is a huge added bonus. Oh and, yes you can actually work out in these cute clothes because they stretch and breathe, and they don’t show awful sweat stains in embarrassing places.  The unfortunate part is, with workout clothes this cute, and this affordable, I have even less of an incentive to get out of them during the day!

Give our Reflex line a try and let me know what you think.  We always love to hear how we can improve and make an even better product for your busy lifestyle. You can find me at www.facebook.com/kerstinlindquistqvc  and every Thursday at noon and Saturday at 10am on QVC!

Blessings!

Passover Dinner

0
0

Chag Sameach to you and your loved ones.

I love holidays, and being able to celebrate them with loved ones is something I cherish deeply.

The beginning of this week marked the start of Passover, the Jewish holiday commemorating the liberation by God of the Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt. We begin this holiday with Seder dinner; a family feast where we retell the story of our liberation and eat symbolic foods that represent the story of Passover and celebrate our freedom.

Most of the day on Monday was spent preparing for Seder dinner. Among the many dishes I prepared, I made my famous matzah ball soup, a traditional Jewish dish made with chicken broth and hand-made matzah balls made with matzah meal, eggs, water and either olive oil. It’s a dish I love to make, especially for Passover.

For Seder, we were joined by our family friend Tiffany who is celebrating her recent engagement! My granddaughter Aya asked the 4 Questions, which asks us all to reflect on what makes this night and dinner different than all the others. Part of the tradition of The 4 Questions is that the youngest person at dinner do the honors, and so Aya was chosen. It was a wonderful evening and I’m thrilled that we were able to enjoy it. I hope you were able to enjoy yours as well.

What holidaysdo you look forward to sharing with your family, and what holiday traditions do you cherish most?

Make a Spring Centerpiece in Seconds!

0
0

Hi, everyone! Happy Easter!

What’s on your calendar for tomorrow? Are family and friends coming in for the holiday? Are you spending the day preparing for your loved ones’ arrival? I know how much I cherish my weekends, so I’m sure your to-do list is growing by the minute. But don’t forget to take a break from the cleaning and cooking and join me for You’re Home with Jill tomorrow at 8pm ET. I’ll show you how easy it is to make my Pineapple Casserole I shared earlier this week. And, I’ll also show you how to make this!

DIY Spring Centerpiece

Doesn’t that just say spring? You’ll be thrilled to know you can “make” this centerpiece in a matter of…oh, let’s see…seconds. All you have to do is find a spring wreath, glass hurricane, and a flameless candle. This particular wreath is something I purchased a few weeks ago…it’s the Bethlehem Lights Dogwood Wreath, H202316. Then, I just put a hurricane and candle I’ve had for ages inside to make a centerpiece.

You can really use any wreath you already own, as well as any kind of decorative hurricane, be it a clear glass or pretty mercury glass vase--even a tall mason jar would look terrific. Just be cognizant of the size of each piece so it balances. The decorative jar or hurricane should fit fairly snugly inside the wreath and should be high enough to be seen over the sides. The candle inside should also clear the sides of the wreath, but shouldn't be as high as or higher than the lip of the vessel.

I’m so excited to see you again tomorrow at 8pm ET. But, if you’re traveling or having a glow-in-the-dark egg hunt tomorrow, I’ll take time now to wish you and your family a very Happy Easter.

From my home to yours,
—Jill

Easy Plants, Fertilizing, and Watering, Oh My!

Gardening questions cropping up now that spring is here? We have you covered! Check back every week for answers to the most frequently asked gardening questions.

5) What Plants Are Easy and Fool-Proof?

As my friend Philip Watson says “There are good reasons these plants flourish along the highways.” and he is talking about four plants that are determined to exist with or without you.

Peonies– One of the most beautiful and fragrant plants I know, peonies will live longer than most of us, upwards of 100 years.  Peonies love full sun and cold winters as the chill of the winter helps bud formation.  When planting, don’t plant deep!  The root base should be only 2 inches below the soil surface.

Butterfly Bush– This colorful shrub attracts butterflies and hummingbirds with its vibrancy and fragrance.  The stunning blooms will last through the summer well into autumn.  And no need to fertilize, as too much will support leaf production, not flower growth.

Daylilies– Often called the “perfect perennial” the Daylily is known for its color, ability to thrive almost everywhere, its drought resistant and has the ability to thrive in wet areas.  The Daylily blooming period can last from one to five weeks, and the “rebloomer” variety blooms twice a season.   Maybe one of my favorite things about daylilies is the way Philip describes them; “The Daylily knows what it’s doing even if you don’t.  You can plant it upside down, sideways and backwards, in a pot, in a garden, anywhere.  It doesn’t need fertilizer, good soil, bad soil, doesn’t matter.”

Rose Of Sharon - There is a reason we find this flowering plant all over rental properties. The Rose of Sharon is a wonderful hedge plant, is drought tolerant and blooms in the late summer into the fall when other blooming plants have come and gone.  A type of Hibiscus, the Rose of Sharon has an “exotic” looking flower which appeals to many garden enthusiasts.

If you haven’t already, be sure to add one of these no-maintenance beauties to your outdoor space and simply let them do their own thing.  Show-offs….

6) When Do I Fertilize My Perennials?

Fertilizing your perennials before they bloom in spring is key.  A reminder I use is “April showers bring May flowers.”  It makes sense that by fertilizing now, the seasonal rain we get will help dissolve the fertilizer and also pull it down deeper in the soil right to its roots.

I think of feeding my plants this way: plants like people need nutrition.  Could we survive on bread and water?  Sure, but we’d be weak and very unhealthy without the nourishment we get from a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, and proteins.  For our plants to be their best too, they need the right sustenance as well.  Here are a few fundamentals to help your plants be the best they can be:

  • Less is more with fertilizing perennials.  Most perennials are light feeders.  Over-fertilizing puts undue stress on plants.
  • Blooming plants want higher doses of potassium and phosphates and a lower percentage of nitrogen in the formula.
  •  Perennials such as Coleus and like foliage plants that do not flower or go to seed require less fertilizer too.
  • Heavy feeding perennials such as peonies, mums, and daylilies should be given bone meal in the fall and then give them another second feeding in the summer.
  • So not to forget our annual friends, annuals require more fertilizer because of their one and only, short life cycle.
  • Established plants in your garden need a treat, so a good sprinkling of fertilizer around each plant is a kind act.

Whether a “thank you” or “welcome back” fertilizing, any correct fertilizing is a small token for our green friends for all of the color, shape and enjoyment they give us the season long!

7) When and How Do I Water My Garden and Potted Plants?

Watering questions are varied and numerous because there are no hard and fast rules.   Do not get overwhelmed by the many factors of properly watering; type of plant, climate, weather conditions, soil, exposure, season.  Take a deep breath and let the look of the plant and feel of the soil direct your watering care.

There are some basic rules of thumb (“green thumb” that is) I use as a guide for my container/potted plants:

How much to water potted plants - Drainage is the key to healthy roots and flourishing plants.   If your container allows, drainage holes on the sides as well as on the bottom is ideal.  Dry surface soil is an obvious signal to water and you may want to water your container plants more than once a day.  Yet, differences in pot, plant size and amount of plants in each, will impact how quickly the soil dries out.  Again it’s best to watch and determine watering schedules for each container.  And remember, no potted plant wants to sit in water so less is more until the plant lets you know its watering needs.  Some plants may need water only once or twice a week, succulents once or twice a month.

How to water potted plants– Focus on the root base of each plant, not the foliage.  When watering, direct spout to the base of the plant, do not water from above through the leaves down to the soil.  You can tell that you have reached through to the roots by watching for water coming out of the drainage holes.

When to water– In warm weather, mornings are the ideal time to water outdoor plants.  This gives plants a chance to drink before the hot sun of late morning.  I strongly advise against watering in the evening because if the foliage stays wet all night long this will create a base for disease.  But of course, if at the end of the day one of your plants is wilting, give it a small amount of water to hold it until the morning feeding.   With your plants in your garden or on your property (not in containers) consider a good drench every 3 or 4 days.  This will give the roots a reason to reach further into the earth to find their own water source and enhance its strength and growth.

And of course don’t forget to “water” yourself too – be well!

Jazz Fest Celebration

Even if you can’t make it down to New Orleans for this tradition, you can celebrate the 45th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival right in your own home.  Jazz Fest is all about letting the good times roll, celebrating the cultural heritage of the city of New Orleans, and the birthplace of jazz.  With great performances, food and more … what’s not to love?

One of my all-time favorite Jazz Fest foods is Crawfish Bread.  It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy crawfish and it’s a decadent snack that’s great on the go.

Crawfish Bread

Crawfish Bread

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Emeril’s Original Essence
  • 1 pound cooked Louisiana crawfish tails (with any fat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onion tops
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Creole mustard, or other whole grain spicy mustard
  • 4 ounces grated Provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 4 ounces grated white Cheddar cheese
  • Two 15-inch loaves of soft French bread

Directions

  1.  Melt the butter over medium heat in a large skillet and, when hot, add the onion, celery, and bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables have wilted, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the garlic, thyme, 1 teaspoon of the Essence and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the crawfish tails, salt, and remaining Essence and cook, stirring, until the crawfish have warmed through and released any liquid and the liquid has evaporated, about 3 minutes.
  4. Stir in the green onions and set aside to cool.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  6. When the crawfish have cooled, stir in the mayonnaise, Creole mustard, and the cheeses until well-combined. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  7. Cut the two loaves of bread nearly in half lengthwise and divide the crawfish filling evenly among the bottom portion of the two loaves. Fold the top portion of bread back over the stuffing and then wrap each loaf tightly in aluminum foil.
  8. Place on a baking sheet and bake until the filling is heated through and the cheese is melted, 25 to 30 minutes. Slice into the desired size portions and serve hot

Once your crawfish bread is ready, put on your favorite jazz record, mix your favorite drink, kick back, relax and pretend like you’re down at the New Orleans Jazz Fest!

When I was developing this formula, I knew I wanted to create a moisturizer that was suitable for all skin types and addressed multiple concerns at once! That’s why I developed Age Arrest with Telo-5 Technology; it offers a comprehensive antiaging approach, targeting the look of wrinkles, roughness, dryness, uneven skin tone, and loss of elasticity. The formula is rich, and absorbs quickly, leaving a beautiful finish. It contains botanical extract, hyaluronic acid, marine extract, an antioxidant blend with amino acid, vitamin C, and Vitamin E, and red algae to help improve hydration, firmness, and skin elasticity.

I’ve always wanted to create a retinol product, but I also knew I wanted a treatment that would be moisturizing to help keep the complexion hydrated and appear healthy-looking. The result is a dramatically different retinol treatment! The RetAsphere Smart Release Carrier System is an exclusive micro-encapsulation technology that stabilizes retinol in its pure form, delivering it in a lipid shell. It replenishes skin with Ceraminde-3 essential skin lipid to help moisturize the skin. It diminishes the appearance of crow's feet, wrinkles, and expression lines while keeping skin looking and feeling more hydrated, smother, and firmer. The result is supple, smooth, younger-looking skin.

I can’t wait for you to try my Wrinkle Release Duo! Best of all, it’s easy to incorporate into your regimen. In the mornings, apply Age Arrest Cream followed by SPF. Age Arrest can be used alone or layered over a treatment serum like DermalQuench Liquid Oxygen Treatment. At night, incorporate RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream three nights a week as your PM moisturizer. I like to alternate between Age Arrest and RetAsphere. For example, I use RetAsphere Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights and Age Arrest on the other nights. Over time, start using RetAsphere more frequently, building up until you are using it every night.

I’d love to hear from you while I’m on air! Call in and let’s talk skincare!

See you on the Q!

Love, Kate

Easter Leftovers? Try My Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes with Ham!

Hi, everyone!

I hope you had a very happy Easter. Are you on a sugar high from all of those chocolate bunnies, Peeps, and Jelly Beans? Or, was your Easter basket full of healthy treats like trail mix and KIND bars? I had a great mix of both—as well as Easter ham, pineapple casserole, and all the fixins! As I expected, there’s quite a pile of leftover ham in the fridge. (Is it the same at your house?) And tonight I’m gonna make my Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes—with Ham!

Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes with Ham

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 4 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, skin on & sliced 1/8'' thick
  • 1-1/2 cups white Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1-1/2 cups Fontina cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cups Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 cups precooked ham, chopped
  • 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Melt the butter with the olive oil in large Dutch oven. Add in the onion and sauté until golden brown. Sprinkle the onion with the flour and stir until combined. Add the milk, cream, nutmeg, salt, pepper, Cheddar, and Fontina and stir until the cheeses are melted. Add the potatoes and simmer for 15-20 minutes over low heat.
  3. Pour the potato mixture into a 9'' x 13'' baking dish. Gently fold in the chopped ham. Top with the 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese and bake for 20-25 minutes, until thick, bubbly, and golden brown.
  4. Garnish with the sprigs of fresh thyme.

This item is prepared with the Temp-tations® Tara's Garden 9'' X 13'' Baker with Lid-It & Wire Rack (K37853).

You don’t have to use exactly two cups of in this recipe—that’s the beauty of a recipe like Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes. It’s already good; you’re just enhancing the flavor! It’s up to you how much “enhancing” you want to do.

Enjoy those leftovers, everyone—especially the chocolate!

From my home to yours,
—Jill

Beauty Obsession: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha-Beta Glow Pads Anti-Aging Self-Tanner A62775

The title alone should have you assuming that this is unlike any other self-tanner.  A lot of us use self-tanner for the obvious reasons; the looked of a slimmed figure, the color that makes us look like we are radiating from within, it’s a temporary fix to a look that we want permanently.

What do we do when it comes to the look of a radiant complexion? Going after the complexion that matches the confidence of how we feel about our bodies when using self-tanner can be quite the daunting task.  A lot of self-tanners are not formulated to be used on your face.  They can clog pores, sadly tint pores, and cause interactions with other skin products that leave you with results you weren’t looking for.

In walks Dr. Gross.  A Park Avenue mainstay, this man, an incredible dermatologist has given us the power of confidence within the treatment of his glow pads.  Not only do his Glow pads deliver a natural-looking tan for our face and décolleté, but his glow pads deliver exfoliation and anti-aging benefits.

When you first go to apply the pad itself, it is quite soft with a calming scent.   You’ll notice that once buffing into your skin in circular motions that there may be some discoloration… that is the exfoliation going to work for a nice even application.  The glow pads are packed with Vitamin D and Hydration which is going to target the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles.  All of this put together is an everyday treatment that’s hard at work, but all anyone see’s is the look of sun-kissed skin without the harmful rays.

Before

After

Take a look at my before and after.  See what I’m talking about?  I use the glow pads in conjunction with Dr. Gross’ Glow Moisturizer to help maximize the benefits of a face that is always in need to of luminosity and color.

My advice: Use this everyday with your other favorite skincare products.  It honestly is radiance I haven’t found anywhere else, that gets my skin natural complexion noticed before a full face of makeup.  As we celebrate Makeover Monday,  let these 50 glow pads be your challenge for a more radiant, confident complexion.

PS.  I just saw on qvc.com there are glow pads for the body now… in they go into my cart!

PM Style:

One of my favorite people is back in PM Style tonight, Stylist and Designer, Jen Rade!  Just in time for the warmer weather she is back with three brand new pieces, which you can see first here!
