Outside the Lines

“To draw, you must close your eyes and sing”

~Pablo Picasso

When I received my first box of crayons as a little girl (the big box, 64 colors with the built in sharpener) I thought WOW!  It was like a rainbow in a box. I remember spending hours coloring page after page in my Barbie coloring book.  I was an inside the line kinda girl back then.  My mom always told me I was very artistic.  I didn’t think much of it then but I guess the seed had been planted.  (Thanks Mom).

My mom loved Paint by Numbers. Do you remember them?  She ALWAYS stayed inside the lines.  They were beautiful and hung in my grandparents’ home for years.  One day I decided to try my hand at one of the pieces she was working on while she was in the other room.  Oops, she was not happy but it was then that she realized it was time for me to have my own painting supplies.

I took art classes in high school.  I never thought I was very good but I did a few pieces that I was proud of.  I continued drawing and painting as an adult.  I took a class at a local art school.  My family wanted the pieces that I did and still have them framed and hanging in their homes.  My love of painting and drawing was re-energized this year when Leah, and Barb and I went to Painting with a Twist.  Now I can’t stop!

For Christmas, I painted something for everyone in my family and a few friends you might recognize.  Here are a few of my latest pieces.  I never call myself an artist.  I paint for fun.  I paint to relax.  I paint to watch the color move across the canvas and become what I see or imagine.  And now, I paint outside the lines.

Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.”
