The last time I took a vacation over three days, I was on my honeymoon. Suffice it to say, I was in need of a prolonged getaway. Luckily, living in NYC means direct flights to the Caribbean and Jamaica, so quick trips for some fun in the sun and sand are a real possibility. Don’t worry – this time, I remembered a passport for my son!
We chose the Half Moon resort in Jamaica, where the people were warm, the local food was delicious (Ashvin loved it! Surprise, surprise – he’s a big eater) and the views were just what I needed. The key to this trip’s success? Our private pool. My husband will kill me for sharing this, but hey, here goes: he can’t swim. His idea of “swimming” is reading the newspaper in the water. I wanted to spare him the embarrassment I knew he’d feel climbing into a public pool, so I opted for a suite with a private one. Don’t I score major wife points here? Our suite also came with a rollaway crib, which let us roll Ashvin into the shade for a nap, letting him enjoy the ocean air while he slept and us to keep an eye on him. Ultimately, it was like having our own house within the hotel grounds. What a treat!
To me, there is nothing as calming as the water. The feeling of being submersed is unlike anything – the quiet and tranquility are unmatched. We took a paddle boat out one day (my husband fought me – “Who will save me if we flip over? You’ll save the baby, who will save me?”). With Ashvin in my lap, we headed out, and our time “at sea” was my favorite of our trip. No distractions – no phones, no technology – only my family, me and the sun. Perfect.
Evening desserts by the pool and strolls on the beach (wearing my Joan Rivers sunglasses, of course!) made it difficult to transition back to real life, but I can’t complain. Real life is pretty great, too :)
