How much do you love that antique metallic finish you see on lamps, vases, and picture frames? It just looks so elegant and refined, doesn’t it? But, I’m afraid you get what you pay for. The price tags on almost all of those pieces can be pretty steep…especially if the item is a true antique.
So here’s a fun idea for this weekend: make your own “antique” pieces! All you need is some metallic spray paint, vinegar, and water. And, this is what you get! This was just a clear glass vase before and now it has so much more charm. I just love how the flameless candle—which was something I just had on hand—makes that "antique" finish really come through.
Here’s what you need:
• Krylon’s Looking Glass Spray Paint
• 1 cup vinegar & 1 cup water in a spray bottle
• Paper towels
• Glass item to decorate (vase, lamp base, etc.)
Now, here’s what you do:
1. Wash the item in warm, soapy water and dry it thoroughly.
2. Some DIY’ers will tell you to decorate the inside of your item so the finish lasts longer. But, I use this vase true to form and didn’t want the paint/vinegar residue to kill my fresh flowers. So I sprayed the outside with vinegar and water. (You’re likely to get some big drops, which is really what you want, because it makes the vase look “antique” and not just spray painted. But, be careful—those drops run and you’ll want to dab them with a paper towel.)
3. Now, spray on a thin layer of paint (the vinegar should still be wet) and let it dry for a minute.
4. Spray on another coat of vinegar and water, let it dry for a 2-3 minutes, and lightly sponge off the mixture with your towels.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you’re satisfied…mine looked great after three coats.
Give this a go and let me know how it works, okay? I’d love to see photos of your finished projects…remember, you can share them on my Facebook page, Instagram, Pinterest, or Twitter.
