David & The UNC Clef Hangers Wish You a Very Merry Christmas!

Hello, foodies…

I hope you were lucky enough to see the men's a cappella group—the UNC Clef Hangers—perform in our QVC studios last month. For those of you who don’t know, I used to sing with the Clef Hangers when I was a student at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Anyway, the current group honored us with a few Christmas carols during their visit and they allowed me to join them for a very special number…

Foodies, I hope this holiday season finds you whole with the people you love most surrounded by warmth, happiness, and lots of delicious food. Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

 Keep it flavorful!
—David

P.S. Wednesday is QVC’s A Joy of Jewelry Event, so I’ll see you Sunday on In the Kitchen with David at Noon ET.

A Piece That Inspires

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE! I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to sleeping in, wrapping a few last-minute gifts, staying in my PJ's all day and cooking up a storm before opening up pajama gifts with Gabby and going to late-night services. However you're planning on spending your holidays, I hope it is immersed in love and laughter.

But before I start my Christmas celebrations, I've got something very exciting to do...kick off the Christmas Eve Today's Special Value from Diamonique! It's a groundbreaker for this line...a stunning interlocking openwork ring laced with sparkling jewels. In my opinion, it's a celebration of everything Diamonique is: brilliance, fashion, elegance, innovation, and affordability. I can't wait to show it to you live!

As I was brainstorming what I wanted to say about this ring to you at midnight, I kept visualizing all the the things this ring reminds me of. It's only very special pieces that inspire me like this one did. And it makes me smile because it calls to mind so many beautiful images. I thought I'd share a few!

The sophisticated and beautiful lines of the Eiffel Tower

The bursts of light and excitement from fireworks

The delicate and airy ribbon movements of dancers

The sparkle and drama of the New Years Eve ball dropping

If you have a moment, stop by my Facebook page and share your thoughts on this TSV, or more importantly, sharing your holiday plans and wishes with me. I'm so grateful to you for watching us on air, reading our stories here, and sharing your joys with us online. You are a blessing. Happy Holidays!

Reduced-Guilt Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Recipe

Last year, I got a Vitamix for Christmas. You'd have thought I was 10 years old getting her favorite doll all over again! I squealed when I unwrapped it. I couldn't wait to make smoothies, soups, doughs, and more. Cut to a year later, and I'm still a Vitamix vixen! Today we've got the Vitamix as a TSV, so I thought I'd give you a peek at something I whipped up for Gabby and myself just a couple days ago!

I try to "eat clean" as much as I can. This time of the year is the hardest. Treats abound everywhere! And while that's a great problem to have, it means making better choices and looking for healthier alternatives are more important than ever. So when I had a craving for pumpkin pie, I looked to my Vitamix to help me with a slimmed-down but just-as-tasty version. I call it the "Reduced Guilt Pumpkin Pie Smoothie!"

You will need:

1/2 ripe banana

1 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice)

1/2 canned pumpkin

1 tsp or to-taste agave syrup

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp ginger

pinch each of nutmeg, cloves and allspice

ice to taste

Directions:

Here are your very complicated instructions: throw all the above ingredients in the Vitamix and blend! I know. Difficult, right?

As you can see, I topped mine with whipped cream. Fat-free though, I swear!! But after giving it a try I think I might blend in some oats for a breakfast option too. What do you think?

Let me know if you gave this a try...and if you have a favorite Vitamix treat stop by my Facebook page and let me know! Happy New Year!

The Bauer Family Christmas Tree - Merry Christmas!

Bauer Family Christmas Tree

If I could only have one Christmas decoration, it would be the tree. While there are certainly glamorous ways to decorate a tree, I’ve always seen the tree as a symbol of love and family and wonderful memories. Our tree tells my family’s story…and I’d like to share some of it with all of you…

Jill's First Ornament

So, I guess the story should start here. This is the first ornament my mom ever bought for me. She was pregnant with me at the time, and this angel hung on the tree she and my Dad had in December, 1967. I was born 4 months later…funny how the angel has dark hair like me, especially since my folks were both convinced they were having a boy!!

Kylie's First Ornament

And speaking of first ornaments….when Kylie came into my life, this was the first ornament I ever bought for her. She was only 1! I’ve bought her an ornament every year since.

Baby's First Christmas - Trevor

And this is the ornament Kylie picked out for her little brother after Trevor was born.

Grandma Metzger's Ornament

The big, red ball ornament is in memory of my Grandma Metzger. She gave me a similar, beautiful red ornament, but it broke several years ago when our tree fell over. I don’t think I’ve ever sobbed so much. But this one is pretty close to the original. I think she would like it.

Handmade Santa

This ornament is one my mom made years ago. It was always one of my favorites growing up, and now it's one of my kids’ favorites too. They actually fight over who gets to hang it each year!

Jill's Dad's Ornament

We bought this snow globe ornament after my dad passed away. My Mom hangs it on the tree each year. We sure miss him.

Jill's Dad's Ornament 2

This is another ornament I found after my dad died…he loved race horses. It just seemed perfect. My kids treasure this ornament and usually like it to be the first ornament we hang on the tree. My dad would have loved that.

Duke's Ornament

This is the first Christmas without our sweet dog, Duke. He loved Christmas! He would go in and lie down near the Christmas tree as soon as it was put up. He was magic.

Rottie Ornament

Of course, we still have our funny Brosky…so he gets an ornament too!

Cardinal Ornament from Joan Rivers

This is an ornament that Joan Rivers sent me several years ago. She knew how much I loved cardinals and that they reminded me of my grandmother. I was a little emotional putting this egg on the tree this year. I still can’t believe she is gone…I know she’d be happy that her ornament was part of my family tree.

I hope you liked seeing how we treasure our Christmas tree! It’s truly the story of my family…what we love, who we are, where we’ve been and who we miss. I’m sure your tree tells a similar story…isn’t it wonderful?

Sending love to all of you this Christmas!

XO,
Jill

A Treasured Walking Buddy

Whether you're an easy-going walker or a speed racer, Today's Special Value Vionics are going to be your new go-to shoe for hitting the pavement. I wanted to share with you guys the joy that having a walking buddy has given me! Here's a little bit from Kerstin's perspective, then from me.

“Rachel and I didn’t know each other that well when she emailed me and said she saw I was walking the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer 3 day walk and wanted to help me train. I was so happy!  I had no one to walk with and I was still a new host far from home and all my people. We bragged our walking shoes, and headed out to start what would become some of our most treasured traditions.

Those months of walking we became best friends.  She was always a few steps behind me, since I’m such a walk-aholic, but I keep her motivated, and she keeps me from getting too crazy! She likes to sleep in can be a fair-weather walker, but I get her going!!! Our walks have become more about our mental health than physical. We talk and work things out, and our relationship has grown so strong as a result. I’m so blessed by her and love that she took a chance and reached out to walk with me all those years ago.” –Kerstin

“I like walking and it definitely feels good for my body, but I like to take a leisurely pace, enjoy my surroundings, and my company. Kerstin and I balance each other out, and I love having her as a walking buddy...even if she makes me walk in the snow and the heat AND the rain...

It’s created such a bond between us, and it’s that special time we have together that has let us truly get to know the other one. We even grab some other of our fellow hosts to join in our crazy walks! Stacey Stauffer and Alberti Popaj have both joined us recently. It’s such fun!

For anyone who is looking to improve their mental and physical health, I highly recommend grabbing a walking buddy. You may even find your new best friend.” —Rachel

Everyone falls in love with this antiaging treatment cleanser and I guarantee you will too. It makes your skin feel so sensational and removes all makeup, including eye makeup grime from the day, but it never leaves your skin feeling dry. It leaves your skin feeling perfectly hydrated and polished.

Step 2: Perricone MD Cold Plasma Eye
To have the power of Cold Plasma’s delivery system for your eyes is truly, truly phenomenal. Cold Plasma Eye addresses the visible signs of aging around the eye. If your eye area is one of your greatest concerns, this is a powerful tool to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while refreshing and hydrating the delicate eye area. In a consumer-use study, after four weeks of using the Neuropeptide Nécolletage, 90% said they were amazed how this product improved the appearance of the ring lines around their neck. Welcome to a beautiful, younger and sexier looking neck

Bring on the blues, in a happy way! Your birthstone crashes in the end of the year with heavenly blue topaz, cooling turquoise, and the pleochroism properties of Tanzanite in blue, purple, and red! Your stones are breathtaking and highly sought after.

Turquoise has been valued since the ancient civilizations of the Egyptians, Turks, American Indians, Aztecs, and Persians. It represents friendship and luck, and many travelers wore turquoise to bring them good fortune along their journeys. Take care of your precious turquoise and keep it safe from scratches as it is on the softer side at between  5.0 and 6.0 on the Mohs’ Hardness Scale.

Bronzo Italia Turquoise & Polished Bead Inlay Round Bangle

Bronzo Italia Multi-strand Turquoise & Brushed Satin Nugget Bracelet

Your Blue Topaz has cooling properties thought to settle hot tempers and cure insanity…..that’s a stone for me!!!! Blue Topaz is known for its good clarity, and it’s cool blue that is similar to aquamarine, but without the green tones. It’s a very sturdy stone, at 8.0 on the Mohs’ Scale, so if it’s properly taken care of, it should last a lifetime!!!

London Blue Topaz Sterling Tennis Bracelet

Gemstone Bold Sterling Bracelet

Or Paz Sterling 2.40 ct tw Blue Topaz Large Bangle

Tanzanite was newly added as one of your birthstones in 2002 and that makes you super cool because it represents a happy life and good fortune! Tanzanite is a recent addition to the gem world- it was discovered in Tanzania in 1967, and that is still the only place it can be found, which makes this scarce stone extra special!! You should make sure to take good care of your tanzanite because it is a relatively soft stone – a 6 on the Mohs’ Hardness Scale.

So all you December blue babies, celebrate, because you have 3 of the most sought after stones and everyone loves them! (Including ME!!!)

Happy Birthday!!!

Favorite Time of Year

Hello all. I hope that everyone is bundled up and enjoying the holidays with their families. So far, I am having a great holiday season with my family and friends.

I recently attended a holiday party on a boat called The Atlantica. We cruised around the Hudson River and enjoyed stunning views of the New York City skyline. No matter how many times I see it, I am still thrilled by that view.

I really love to bake during this time of year. One of my favorite recipes to make is biscotti. Whether you’re enjoying biscotti with tea, coffee or a holiday punch, it’s the perfect seasonal treat. Below is my favorite recipe. It’s easier than most biscotti recipes and I think you’ll love it!

My Favorite Biscotti Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • 2 1/4 cups flour, all-purpose
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 2/3 cup raw pistachio nuts

Directions:

1.     Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2.     Butter and flour a baking sheet.

3.     In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

4.     Beat in the eggs, vanilla, and orange zest until blended.

5.     In another bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, cloves and salt.

6.     Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat until blended.

7.     Stir in cranberries and pistachios.

8.     Divide the dough in half.

9.     One at a time, place the 2 dough portions on the prepared baking sheet and form each into a log about 1/2 inch high, 1 1/2 inches wide and 14 inches long.

10.  Space logs at least 2 inches apart.

11.  Bake the logs for 25-30 minutes or until set and light brown.

12.  Transfer to a cutting board and let cool 6-8 minutes.

13.  Reduce the oven temperature to 300 degrees.

14.  Using a very sharp knife, cut the logs in the diagonal into slices 3/8 inch thick.

15.  Stand the slices upright on the baking sheet and return the sheet to the oven for 15 minutes to dry the cookies thoroughly.

16.  Transfer to racks to cool.

I made some with pistachios and some with chocolate chips. Let me know how yours turn out!

Since the holidays are such a busy time, I wanted to send everyone a reminder about an amazing promotion. For today only, everything is on Easy Pay! You’re done with your holiday shopping, so you can finally treat yourself to those pieces that you’ve been dreaming about.

I know that you’re at home relaxing, so this really is the perfect time for self-indulgence. Enjoy the rest of the holiday season! See you next year!

Over the last three weeks, I've been jet-setting across the globe. From Aruba, to London to Los Angeles to New York, the Evianna Fig is quickly becoming my must-have accessory of the season.

While soaking up the sun in the Caribbean, my metallic pair added a hint of glamour and effortless style to an aqua sundress. Then in the UK, they gave a tailored finish to my winter wardrobe.

For all those who love our Ashland bottom (Jane Treacy are you listening?), the Evianna offers the same low wedge silhouette and Bendables flexibility, but with a slightly more tapered shape making it even more versatile. The smooth leather and decorative perforations show the true craftsmanship of Clarks. With all my travels, I am so grateful I had the Evianna Fig keeping me feeling fashionable, but most importantly, comfortable.

QVC B-I-N-G-O Night at the Coatesville VA

As you might imagine, the holiday season FLIES around here. I mean, when the enormous tree goes up in the atrium in October I'm pretty sure everyone probably thinks, 'hey it's a little early for that don't you think?' Then, next thing you know the tree is gone and the gorgeous holiday sets are broken down because now everyone in the building has caught Spring Fever!

While the holiday season moves at the speed of light, there are so many wonderful events that QVC offers to everyone in the building that allow us to slow down and smell the peppermint mocha cappuccino brewing in the cafe... that allow us to enjoy the sound of our favorite Christmas carols sung by the QVC choir in the middle of the atrium...that allow us to reach out to our local community, build relationships, and cherish moments with those who sacrificed their lives and service for all of us.

With that said, a couple of weeks ago we had our 3rd Annual VA Bingo night. It's really a night for us to celebrate the holidays with the vets. We share laughs, stories, news of BINGO victories, and most importantly it's a time for us to thank each and every veteran for all they have done.

Oh and did we mention how amazing the prizes are?? Speaking of which, I will now use this time to give a big shout out to Nancy Swisher, Caroline Stueck, and all of our Q employees that came out for this fun night of Bingo. Nancy Swisher, who is part of the Talent Department, pours her heart and soul into this event each year to make sure it is just right and that we are dishing up the best of the best prizes for our vets!

Despite any unlucky BINGO cards, I believe the night was a complete success and a great way to stay grounded in what the holiday season is truly about. So often we are consumed by our gift lists, and who is cooking what for dinner, and where will we open presents. But really, is that what the holidays are for? No, it's about taking a step back to appreciate your loved ones, your friends, your co-workers, and also the individuals you may not know on a personal level who have fought and served our country.

I'm so excited to share photos from the night so that anyone who was not able to attend can truly see the magic in the room. A little competition mixed in with some good old-fashion fun topped off with AMAZING PRIZES!!

Mele Kalikimaka!

This holiday season, I am so grateful that our family is blessed with health and happiness.  We celebrated with a vacation on Oahu with our son Miles, his wife Heather and our precious granddaughter Grace. It was so nice to have a week to get to know her, she will turn one on December 23rd, and we hadn’t seen her since April!  We found we have a lot in common.  We both love swimming, Christmas trees, luaus and Mickey Mouse!  About the only thing we didn’t see eye to eye on is that sand is an irresistible snack.

The adventure continues this week when she travels to Minnesota to meet my family and her first snowman! Everyone is so excited, but a little concerned about the fact that our little San Diego baby prefers bare feet! I’m hoping she loves her Uggs as much as I do. We’ll see how she embraces her puffer jacket and pants, this may change the way she feels about spending time with her Grandma Carolyn. It’s one thing to be dressed up in pretty Hawaiian dresses, quite another to be bundled up like an Eskimo. I’ll need to remind myself that I spent my infancy in snowmobile suits, Grace in swimsuits!

Bill and I want to thank you all for being such a special part of our life, personally and professionally.  We have had a wonderful year, thanks to you!  I look forward to hearing your holiday stories filled with family and friends. May your Christmas be joyful and your New Year bring all l that you wish for!

Love and Cheer,

Carolyn

Hi friends. Happy New Year! 2015 is finally here. I hope that everyone enjoyed spending the holidays with their families and friends.

The New Year is a great time for new beginnings. This year, my New Year’s Resolution is to eat less carbs and eat more protein. What are your New Year’s Resolutions? I would love to know all about them—let me know on my Facebook page.

The holiday season brings me so much inspiration for my sketches. Besides attending holiday parties, I’ve been sketching like crazy the past few weeks on everything from napkins to wrapping paper.

We have great shows coming up with lots of 2015 pizzazz. You’ll love my beautiful, sterling morganite ring. The light pink color of the morganite is so beautiful and happy—it even reminds me of spring.

Hoping all you January babies will love my rhodolite tennis bracelet and matching necklace since garnet is your birthstone.

Start the New Year with us. Watch my shows on January 4 from 1–3am and January 5 from 11am—12pm. I look forward to waving to you during the show and welcoming in 2015 together.

XO,

Judith

Color My World!

$

0

I honestly believe that my good friend Jeanne Bice was one of the very few women who changed the way woman ‘of a certain age’ wore color!  Before Jeanne, women over 40 were forced by clothing designers with items that were limited in color to just dark shades of black and brown.  When Jeanne first appeared on QVC in 1995 she proudly proclaimed:

“Listen ladies, throw out those dark shades and step into all of the beautiful colors of the rainbow that God has given us – it’s time to take color away from just the cute skinny young ones and reclaim what is rightfully ours!”

And you know what – you all listened – and Jeanne brought you more and more and more vibrant colors each month to match your vibrant and beautiful souls!

Jeanne LOVED color – and so do I!!  When Jeanne would call me up, she would frequently say to me – “Patrick, Quacker Factory is all about comfort and excellent quality – but it’s also about color – don’t ever forget that.  Color is a reflection of ones soul – so make sure you ALWAYS wear a little bit of color every single day.”  I’ve followed her advice – and every time I am on QVC showing Quacker Factory, I make sure to have one of my trademark colored sweaters on – it helps me know that Jeanne is right there in the studio with me!

When Jeanne bought her new house in Florida, she ‘hired’ her daughter Lee to be her decorator since Lee had a degree from the prestigious Parsons New School of Design in New York City – and her first instruction to Lee was to make sure there was LOTS of color.  Lee also loved color, so she had no problem meeting her mother’s expectations – as you can see from these pictures of Jeanne’s stunning home!  The first one is of Jeanne’s Family Room and the second one is of Jeanne’s Living Room  - and of course the third one is of my favorite room in her house – the Kitchen.  (I think you’ll agree that Lee did a Quack-Tabulous job!!

Jeanne loved this time of year around the holidays because it meant that she could add even MORE color in the house with all of her gorgeous Christmas trees!  Here’s a picture of one of her many colorful trees:

Another beautiful woman who Jeanne admired, Dolly Parton, loved color as well.  Who can forget her hit song ‘Coat Of Many Colors’?!

And our Quackers who are Red Hatters know a thing or two about color as well!  Many years ago a woman named Jenny Joseph wrote a poem called ‘Warning’ that starts off with these words:

“When I am an old woman I shall wear purple

with a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me…”

That poem started a revolution of sorts, and now wherever you go, you can see ladies sporting their purple outfits and their fabulous red hats taking inspiration from the poem that is all about embracing life and FUN, rather than being held back by age, and what everyone ‘expects’ an older lady to be and do!  Jeanne & Jenny definitely changed the way women wear color – and I personally believe the world is a better place because of that!!

Speaking of color, did you know that there is one very important group that sets the worldwide standard for colors?  It’s called The Pantone Color Institute and just about every known designer relies on it to ensure color consistency around the world.  In short, Pantone is THE color expert!  They provide color trend forecasting and use a standardized color reproduction system that allows different manufacturers in different locations to be able to match colors perfectly.  Quacker Factory and QVC rely on the Pantone system to ensure each of your items is consistent and beautiful.

Each year in December, Pantone announces their Color Of The Year – and it’s something that I really look forward to!  I’ve loved writing my ‘Patrick’s Pick of the Month’ blogs for you the last few months – and I’ll be bringing you more picks in the New Year – but for now I’m happy to reveal to you the Pantone Color of 2015!!

This years stunning and beautiful color is – drum roll please…

Marsala

On the Pantone website, they describe this beautiful color like this:

“Marsala is a subtly seductive shade, one that draws us into its embracing warmth.  Much like fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness.”

I couldn’t agree with them more!  And lookie here – I’ve found a picture of our beloved Jeanne Bice wearing a color very similar to it.  (She was ALWAYS ahead of the current trends!)

What do you think of the 2015 Pantone Color Of The Year – Marsala????  Are there any items you would like to see our incredible Design Team make with this color?

I announced the Pantone Color Of The Year yesterday on my Facebook page, and one of our Quacker viewers wrote to me and said she thought the beautiful color Marsala looked like fine wine – my reply back to her was “I’ll drink to that!”

I agree with the great Oscar Wilde’s quote about color:

“Mere color…can speak to the soul in a thousands different ways.”

2015 marks our 20th year on QVC!  We have a lot of exciting plans for the ENTIRE year.   Make sure you have signed up to receive our emails so you don’t miss a thing!!   Click here to join:  http://bit.ly/Join_QF

Hello, foodies…

How was your holiday? Are you still celebrating? I hope so! I had a wonderful Christmas with my family in North Carolina and today I’m headed down South for a little fun in the sun. My fellow hosts will be filling in for me on In the Kitchen with Davidwhile I'm on vacation, starting with my friend Carolyn Gracie this Sunday.

Carolyn will be presenting our next-to-last Sweet Treat for the month of December…Slow-Cooker Chocolate Bananas Foster, which is as easy and decadent as it sounds.

Slow-Cooker Chocolate Bananas Foster

Slow-Cooker Chocolate Bananas Foster
Serves 6–8

This recipe is prepared with the Ninja 4-in-1 6-Quart Multi-Cooker with Recipe Book & Travel Bag (K41333).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp rum extract or 1/4 cup white rum
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 bananas
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts, toasted
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Preparation:

  1. Place the butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, rum extract or rum, lemon juice, and cinnamon into a slow cooker. Stir the ingredients together.
  2. Peel the bananas, slice them widthwise into 1" discs, and place the pieces in a medium-size bowl with the cornstarch. Carefully toss the bananas until they're coated with the corn starch and spoon them into the slow cooker. Carefully fold them into the butter/sugar mixture well coated. Set the slow cooker on high and cook for 1 hour.
  3. After the cooking time ends, remove the lid and stir the bananas, being careful not to break them up. Sprinkle the chocolate chips and walnuts over top. Place the lid back on and let it sit for 5 more minutes, or until the chocolate chips are melted. Serve over ice cream.

Mary QVC will be keeping an eye on my Facebook page while I’m out of town but I promise to check in when I can. And I promise to write a quick blog for you on Monday and Friday, as usual. Have a wonderful holiday weekend, everyone. I hope you can join Carolyn and Mary on Sunday at Noon ET.

Keep it flavorful!

VIDEO

Mimosa Cupcakes
Serves 12

This recipe is prepared with the KitchenAid 5-Quart 325-Watt Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Glass Bowl (K41486).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:
Cupcakes:

  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp orange extract
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp sparkling wine or ginger ale
  • 2 tsp finely grated orange zest

Frosting:

  • 2 cups vanilla frosting
  • 1 tsp finely grated orange zest
  • 1/8 tsp orange extract
  • 1 Tbsp sparkling wine or ginger ale
  • Edible glitter or coarse, white sparkling sugar for decorating

Preparation:

  1. To prepare the cupcakes, preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium-size bowl. Set aside. Fit a stand mixer with the whip attachment. Whip the eggs and sugar on medium speed until they're light, creamy, and pale yellow. Reduce the speed to medium-low and add the vanilla, oil, orange extract, wine, and orange zest, mixing until combined. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until just combined and smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl if necessary.
  3. Pour the cupcake batter into the lined muffin pans, filling each cup 3/4 full. Bake on the bottom rack of the oven for 16–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cupcake comes out clean. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool completely.
  4. To prepare the frosting, place the vanilla icing in a mixing bowl and fold in the orange zest, orange extract, and wine. Spoon the frosting into a decorating bag with a large star tip. Pipe the icing onto the cupcakes and sprinkle with glitter.

Foodies, the lovely Carolyn Gracie is with you once again this Wednesday night for In the Kitchen with David at 8pm ET. I’ll see you in 2015!!!

Keep it flavorful!
