Fall Beauty Trends and Video!

As in fashion, trends in beauty change…rapidly. We’re entering a new season, and though timeless looks will always remain, I can’t wait to try out what’s new! I turned to friend and makeup artist Jessica Liebeskind for some tips on how to achieve the most wearable take on some of fall’s hottest beauty trends:

The new smokey eye:

First, Jessica prepped eyes with a neutral shadow from bareMinerals. I always make the mistake of applying my BB cream, foundation or under eye concealer on my lids as a primer. Jessica says NO! Start with dry lids before you do your smokey eye. You can, however, use an eyeshadow primer if you feel you must.

Next, and here’s why I’m loving this look, she pulled out her secret: there’s no liner involved! Rather, Jessica recommends using only shadow, and wrapping it completely around the entire eye. One thing you can’t forget when wearing a smokey eye, though, is mascara. We used Bobbi Brown’s. To get your mascara brush as close to your lash line as possible, gently lift your lid when applying. Feel free to be liberal with your application on the top lashes – you want to be bold! Be less generous on your lower lashes; there, color should only be used to tint, not add volume or definition. Finish the look with a popping pink blush for brightness and freshness, and apply a rich hue to lips, like bareMinerals Lip Quickie in Bordeaux.

*Extra tip: dark shadow can be messy! If flakes of shadow or mascara fall below your eyes, clean up with a touch of moisturizer and concealer.

The bold cat eye:

The best part about this trend is that it can be altered to suit the occasion; go for a sophisticated, slim line for a professional look, or opt for a bolder, smudged line for nighttime. For a super slender line, Jessica suggests a calligraphy pen liner. Laura Geller makes a fantastic one. Use the pen itself as a tool, using the length of the body of the pen to help guide you when drawing your line. Make sure to lift your line slightly at the end to keep it from falling flat. To take the look up a notch, use a gel liner, like Bobbi Brown’s, that can be easily smudged. Really pack the liner on – no need to be perfect! After you’ve drawn your line, use your fingertip to muss it up. The shadowy, uneven effect of this line is what makes it so sexy!

Finally, opt for amazing, volumizing mascara

*Extra tip: This is a time when you do want to use a primer. Dark shadow liner needs something to cling to; you don’t want it migrating down your face! Another trick for keeping your liner in place? Apply liquid over pencil.

Copper:

I saw copper eyes all over the fall runways during fashion week, so I know this look is BIG.

The key to making this trend a success is working with your skin tone, as copper tones can bring out redness, depending on your coloring. Another tip here is to never pick a copper that matches your skin exactly, as it will make your overall color flat. The good news? Choosing the right products means this look can work for anyone!

First, choose two shades of copper. For me, Jess used a champagne pink all over my lid and a chocolate, copper shimmer as liner. She emphasized that a dark mascara is important to offset the shimmery tones on my lids.

The perfect lip with this look? It’s not glossy. Instead, go for a…

Matte lip:

This season, the matte lip is creamy and conditioning, not flat. To knock this trend out of the park, you must start with hydrated lips. This is easy – just use a dab of moisturizer! Apply color evenly to lips, then multitask! Use your lip color on your cheeks as a cream blush to give them an extra boost.

Two things to remember: first, forego heavy eye makeup. Your lips should remain the focus. Second, resist the urge to apply powder to your lips. You may think it will enhance their matte look, but it will simply make them look cakey. You don’t want that!

This is the trend for the girl who doesn’t want to wear a lot of makeup, but who still wants to make a statement!

What trends will you be trying this fall? My opinion? Don’t be scared – try them all!
