It’s Wear it Well Wednesday… Ask Margaux! Up This Week: Bold Prints!

$

Loretta from Naples, Florida had a question for me this week that I have heard from many other ladies over the past year: “I love to wear bold prints, but I am self-conscious because I think they make me look larger that I am.”

Wearing a print does take courage, I know it, but it’s also extremely fun! When you put a gorgeous design on, everyone notices, and it really is a moment that sets you apart. Some days I do want to just blend into the crowd, and then other days I don’t…my fashion choices are decided by my mood.

Many designers don’t know how to do prints well, but if you are shopping with Bob Mackie, you are not only getting a print that is a one-of-a-kind work of art, but you are also getting a design that has been created by a true artist and a man who knows how to dress women, even a woman who is more full-figured.

Here is the secret to how to wear it well…all the tops that I am featuring below have a design that is bold and colorful and also enhances the figure:

On the ¾ Sleeve Scoop Neck Print Blouse with Shadow Sides, the wonderful movement from top to bottom works with your figure.

The Fantasy Leopard Print T-Shirt has great texture that goes from left shoulder down to the right hip creating a slimming effect.

The Boat Neck Malibu Print Caftan Top offers a gorgeous contemporary use of color in vertical movement with the added benefit of more color at the bottom. This technique is another great look for looking thinner.

The Jewel Neck Printed Top with Split Bell Sleeves is one of my favorites for showing off a mod and sexy print while still flattering your figure. Notice the way your eye moves up and down the design, and the sleeves add an extra touch of interest for anyone who is more conscious of their arms.

I could go on and on about the way Bob Mackie infuses dynamite eye-catching prints with slimming ready-to-wear silhouettes. There are many more choices from Bob Mackie on QVC.com. But, if you’re like Loretta and feel tentative about wearing something out of your comfort zone, try one of these looks and see what you think.

Bob will be back at QVC on Friday, May 17th from 5 – 7 PM and 9 – 10PM ET. I’ll be on with some of his Wearable Art on Saturday, May 18th from 5 – 7 AM ET.

See you then!

Don't Miss the Season Three Finale of LRS!

Don't forget—this week's season finale starts at 9pm ET!!!

I can’t believe that this Friday is the Season Finale of The Lisa Robertson Show. I swear it seems like just last week we were starting and now it’s almost over!  Although I’m sad to see the season come to an end, I think the break gives us time to make sure that what we have to offer you next season is even better!  Always trying to improve. :)

So this week is a "two-fer"! We’re starting at 9pm ET and have 2 hours together so it's two, two, two of everything!  Double the designers, double the handbags, double the beauty, double the G.I.L.I.(TM), double the jewelry...you get the idea! :)

We have some great "Looks" in this week's finale that reflect some of the trends we’ve been talking about in this season. The "Spring into Summer" Look, shows the neutral colorblocking we’ve touched on. It’s such a beautiful, fresh way to wear neutrals and this top by Mark Zunino is "right on.”

The "Golden Girl" Look shows that gold accessories and hardware are trending in a big way. It’s the color of luxury and status, and this season, it’s the color of fashion.  It’s always my favorite, so I’m a happy girl. :)

The "Coral Confidence" Look is showing one of the hot colors for the season (anything in shades of orange). I have to say, this G.I.L.I.(TM) dress turned out beautifully, I love it and will be wearing it this summer!

Our "Decidedly Neutral" Look is an example of the black and white trend. Yes, black and white is always in, but how you wear it is what makes it fresh. (And look at that BAG!!!)

Last but not least, our "Draw Them In" Look is one you won’t see on the show or on the QVC.com The Lisa Robertson Show page. It’s just for our "social" girls, meaning you’ll only see it on Facebook, here in the blog, and on our social platforms. Doesn’t that G.I.L.I.(TM) dress look great in blue? :)

Strivectin, Sanctuary, Mark of Style, Jennifer Hudson, Isaac Mizrahi, Bronzo Italia, Oro Nuovo, KJL…it just keeps going! I’m not sure we can fit all this in our TWO hours!

You may think I need to cut down on my caffeine intake after reading this, but we saved some of the best for last and I can't help but be a little "over the top".

Hope to see you at 9pm ET this Friday night!

—Lisa

P.S. Did I mention that it starts at 9pm ET?  Wouldn't want you to tune in at 10pm and find out you missed half of the show! Lol!  :)

Let's Talk About Today's Denim & Co. TSV!

Hi Ladies!

It’s Heather from the design team for Denim & Co. I am looking forward to a great new TSV today and chatting with you about any questions or comments you have.  I’ll be here all day to talk about the TSV or any product you see in today’s shows.

Today’s TSV is a great new crop that is perfect for spring or summer.  It has the customer favorite full elastic waist with side pocket design in the popular crop inseam length & straight leg shape.  There is a great new lattice design detail at the hem that is open & airy and can be dressed up or down.  The crop has a classic waist, so it falls at the natural waist, with a semi-fitted fit in the hip & a relaxed fit in the thigh.  Because of the lattice detail at the hem, we designed the leg to have a slightly relaxed fit for added comfort.  It comes in a great stretch twill fabric offered in some great colors.

You also might want to check out the matching knit top with the trellis design down the sleeve.   It is tunic length with the customer favorite V-neck & side slits.  It is in Denim & Co.’s standard cotton/spandex blend jersey knit and has a semi-fitted fit.

Which colors will you be picking up today?

Talk to you soon!

Backstage Pass Inside All Access Beauty

When Beauty Day comes around the Q, everyone around the studio knows it will be busy, it will be hectic – but it will also be fun! This Saturday the Q is having a 25 hour All Access Beauty Day – an event that is (to say the very least), a celebration of the best in the beauty biz!  The Q devotes a full day and then some to beauty because we know the products we offer are the very tools that can make a woman feel more confident by covering by fulfilling all of her beauty needs and desires – after all don’t we all want a little more confidence?! Working in the studio, especially on beauty shows, lets me get an inside scoop on the best tips of the beauty trade, while getting a firsthand look at what we do in the studio to make sure we give our loyal Q ladies the best shows possible. Since it’s All Access Beauty Day, I guess it’s only fitting that I give a little behind the scenes look at our prepping for the event.

(Sandra getting her face done pic)

(pic caption: Host Sandra Bennett getting her makeup done for on air.)

Let me start out with the hosts. Our hostess’ are beautiful, let’s face it.  In addition to their natural beauty, they have spent a lot of time learning about the products and how to utilize them to their best advantage. When any given host says they use a product – believe me, I’ve seen and carried their little “beauty bags or baskets” they take to each set when on air, and they are stuffed with lip gloss, nail polish, teeth whitening pens, the works!  They know how to put their best face forward!  In addition to that, hosts will have their makeup done by our beauty guests or makeup artists that come on air to show firsthand how the products can enhance our features. Since I work on a lot of beauty shows prepping the products and switching up the sets, I can tell you it’s amazing to learn all of the “insider” tips of the beauty trade.

Pic of Jane Treacy’s Bag)

(pic caption, Jane’s cute Snow White beauty bag is full of Q products and goodies she loves!

In the studio on All Access Beauty Day, we have to make sure we have all our guests needs met; including giving each beauty team an area or “green room” where they can prep the models and go over their demos or as we call them, “rundowns”.  25 hours of beauty means a lot of models, a lot of mirrors, and more makeup wipes than I can think to count!  Our beauty sets must be stocked with these items throughout the day. Another crucial part of our Beauty Day is to create our product displays so that you at home can see exactly what you are purchasing; it’s up to the hosts and guests that meet before going on air to describe and show you how each product works.

It cosmetic display pic

(pic caption: It Cosmetics display getting ready to go on air)

After producers, technical directors, camera operators, and a lighting team gives each set the final OK, the shows are ready to begin. It takes a lot of coordination to get everyone on each show in the right place at the right time. Models are whisked on and off set in a matter of seconds with a little help from our backstage crew – or a veteran model that knows how to watch the “red light” on top of our live cameras to help her sneak her way onto the set!

All in all, beauty day is an exciting day in the studio and we all pitch in to make sure everything runs smoothly! And I’d say the best part for me – and our other female studio crew, is learning about all of the products firsthand and then sharing all the great tips we learn along the way with you at home. After all—we are loyal Q shoppers too! I’ll share a quick tip I learned on the side of the set during Friday Night Beauty: “If you are a Laura Geller girl and you use her Spackle Primer, put it in the refrigerator or freezer to make it a cool and refreshing way to apply it before makeup.” Alright, I wish I could claim that tip, but that came from the ever glamorous host, Lisa Robertson! But I don’t think she will mind me sharing this tip with you ladies!!

Make sure you tune in for the All Access Beauty event that kicks off this Friday 5/10 at 11pm ET and all day Saturday 5/11. During the event you will get to see some of the behind the scenes action I described! PS – pay close attention for those tips.  I mean it, you will be amazed at what you can do with makeup with just a few little helpful hints!

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate and show appreciation for all that mom has done for us.  This year Mother's Day will be a little different for me.  And that's because I'm a new mom! It's the toughest job I've ever had but my little daughter Jericho makes it all worthwhile.  Jericho is now 4 months old (boy that went by fast!) and although she can't talk just yet I know that she loves her momma.

I just wanted to take a moment to shout out all the mom's on their special day (and share some photos of my little munchkin). Happy Mother's Day!

Mom To Mom

I remember so many times when our four kids were a bit younger and I couldn’t decide what to do. Here's one scenario: it was my day off, two were in school, one had morning preschool and one was at home, and she would finally go down for a morning nap. My dilemma? Do I take the hour to lie down myself and rest since I was so tired, or should I get things done which were staring me in the face, i.e. dishes, bills, laundry, school papers which needed to be filled out, etc!

I knew I would feel better about myself if I got the chores done, but then I would be tired all day and probably impatient with the kids and not a very pleasant mommy. It’s true that sometimes I would dive into the necessary chores and then just try to get through the day the best I could. (Remember those were the days when I worked on-air until late at night and got to bed about 2-3am).

But sometimes I did what the plaque in our powder room says, “Excuse this House”. There were many times when I would read that plaque and know that I needed to rest for a short time, rejuvenate my batteries, so that as Elizabeth woke up from her nap and Ryan came home from preschool at lunchtime and as Eric and Cory came home from school mid-afternoon that I would have the energy to give them my attention to help with homework, to make them a snack, to lay on the living room carpet and play with Thomas the Tank Engine or to just roll around on the floor with them and get down on their level. They LOVED that!

Even though the children are older now and two are in their own apartments, the house is still always in some level of disarray. Do I look back and wish I had always kept it cleaner during those years? Of course not! I’m glad I spent time with the kids!!! Keeping your home straightened up and clean is an ongoing process all the time anyway.

So, with this Mother’s Day 2013 this weekend, and you’re hoping to be shown some appreciation for all you do around the house, just stop what you are doing and spend time with the kids. The dishes can wait, the laundry will get done eventually out of necessity, etc. If they are younger, get on the floor with them. If they are teenagers, get them all sitting around the kitchen table and play a board game or card game. Take them all bowling or to a park and throw a Frisbee or ball. If they are teens, they may groan and roll their eyes, but tell them it’s ‘your’ day, and you get to decide what the family does together.  Ultimately, they will look back on it as a special memory, or if you’re lucky, they’ll ask to do it again sometime!

If you are a mom like me, we are blessed beyond anything we deserve! So even when the going gets hard and you wonder if you can do it all, think about the blessings the children have brought along the way and know they really do appreciate YOU!

I hope you enjoy the two photos of our four blessings I included. The first was taken about 13 years ago and the one above was taken just a few months ago. I can’t help but smile and melt every time I look at them! I hope to write a Mom to Mom blog once a month and include family photos. So, check back about the middle of each month to see what else the Roe’s are up to!

Counting our blessings,

Mary Beth Roe

Legends of Style: Isaac's Most Memorable QVC Moment

My most memorable moment on QVC was on one of my first nights on air with Lisa Robertson.

It was an IML! show, I think it was at 11 PM or so. I was really nervous about a ceramic watch that was premiering in that hour. I was nervous because it was an expensive piece that we had worked really hard on, though we had never shown a watch before. Lisa said the most wonderful thing to me. She said, "The woman out there is really smart. She knows. She's going to take one look at this watch and fall in love." And Lisa was right. It sold out in minutes. It was one of my first item sell-out experiences and I will always remember it.

New Designs for Mom!

Hello Friends,

With Mother’s Day only a few days away, I wanted to say HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all of the Mom’s out there.  It is the most important job that you will ever have.

I vividly remember the day that Gabby was born.  As a first time Mom, I had no idea what to expect.  Fast forward 10 years later and I have enjoyed a decade of laughter, tears, basketball games, football practices, spelling tests, school performances, family vacations, sleepless nights, endless love, endless worry, scrapes and bruises, smiles, and so much more.  One of the best sayings about Motherhood that I have ever heard was one that Judie told me many years ago:  “You are only as happy as your unhappiest child.”  And today (knock on wood), I feel very lucky that both Gabby and Jesse are healthy, happy, and thriving.  Though the focus of my blog is MOMs, I need to give my amazing husband, Brian, a shout out, because without him, I would not be a Mom.  Thank you, Brian, for giving me the greatest gift – family.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, Judie will be debuting many new pieces during her upcoming May shows on May 16th, 17th, and 18th.  Although her shows will be post-Mother’s Day, it will be the perfect time to treat yourself for Summer.  In the meantime, for all of you May babies out there, it’s your time to celebrate, as well.  Enjoy your birthday month with anything GREEN, as the May birthstone is Emerald.  Check out some of my favorite pieces!

Shown above:  Judith Ripka Sterling Birthstone Ring (J312930), Judith Ripka Sterling Birthstone Stud Earrings (J312926), and Judith Ripka Sterling Birthstone Enhancer (J312928)

And, with gold trending, please make sure to check out some of my favorites in this look as well!  If you have not started adding 14K gold clad to your collection, now is the time.  With Summer on the horizon, pops of color and sunshine on its way, yellow gold is a perfect complement.  A great way to make the transition is to start with the NEW stack rings (J282006) available in sterling, goldtone, and rosetone, which could quite possibly be my new favorite!  These rings will make their on-air debut during Judie's QVC visit on May 17th, so be sure to tune in.  Adding a piece to your wardrobe which incorporates all metals is a great way to seamlessly incorporate 14K gold clad into your sterling jewelry collection.

So, please tune in to the Judie's May shows on May 16th, 17th, and 18th.  Until then, wishing everyone a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

With my love,

Allison

If You Could Request Any Dish for Mother's Day, What Would It Be?

Hello, foodies…

Happy Mother’s Day weekend! Don’t tell my mom, but I just got done ordering her a big bouquet of Stargazer Lilies. They're her favorite flowers and it’s the least I can do to make her feel loved. Moms, you’re special people. You give and give some more and don’t ask for anything in return. Be sure to treat yourself this weekend. And hopefully hubby and the kids will surprise you with something nice.

If I were you, I’d request a special dinner from the fam. If hubby’s in charge, he can probably accommodate if it’s something grilled. Yes? And surely the kids can throw together a salad. So how about Zesty Grilled Scallops with a Mango & Arugula Salad? Yes? Here’s the recipe…we’re making it this Sunday. Print it out and hand it to hubby!

Zesty Grilled Scallops with a Mango & Arugula Salad

Zesty Grilled Scallops with a Mango & Arugula Salad

This recipe is prepared with the Guy Fieri 10” Preseasoned Cast Iron Square Grill Pan (K38480).

Go to David's Recipe Item Page for the full list of items that David has used in his recipes.

Ingredients:

Scallops:
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
2 tsp sesame oil
6 Tbsp coconut milk
2 Tbsp lime juice
2 Tbsp orange juice
2 Tbsp pineapple juice
1-1/2 tsp Thai fish sauce
2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
2 scallions, stem removed and chopped
3/4 tsp ginger, minced
1 Tbsp fresh basil, chopped
1 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
1/8 tsp crushed red pepper
1/2 tsp sugar
2 lbs sea scallops, muscles removed

Salad Dressing:
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup sweet red chili sauce
4 large fresh basil leaves
1/4 cup cilantro leaves
2 tsp lime juice
2 tsp coconut milk
2 tsp rice wine vinegar
2 tsp minced ginger
2 tsp Thai fish sauce
1 scallion, stem removed and diced into 1" pieces
1/4 tsp kosher salt

Salad:
1 mango, peeled and diced into 1/2" pieces
5 oz arugula, washed and dried
1 red pepper, julienned
1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
2 carrots, julienned
1/2 a seedless cucumber, diced
1 cup roasted and salted cashews, chopped

Directions:

To prepare the scallops, combine all of the marinade ingredients in a medium-size ceramic or glass bowl. (Do not use metal.) Add the scallops and marinate in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the salad dressing. Combine all the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and mix until blended. Pour the dressing into a leftover container and refrigerate until ready to use.

To prepare the salad, place the fruit and veggies in a large salad bowl. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and use tongs to evenly coat it.

To grill the scallops, preheat a grill (or grill pan) over medium-high heat. Remove the scallops from the marinade and grill approximately 3–4 minutes on each side. Serve immediately with the prepared mango salad.

Now, seafood can be a little tricky to grill…especially fish! So you might just want to have hubby take a tutorial before he gets started.

It's Time For Another Wishful Dish!

$

This one is right around Mother's Day, and I wanted to have a meal that made the whole family happy.  My Friday Night Meal this week is from Corky's, and will put a smile on everyone's face!  You may get a little messy, but that just means you are doing it right, and brings everyone closer.  You get 5 pounds of rib racks, and 2 full pounds of pulled pork.  That's a lot of barbecue!

Since The Wishful Dish airs on Mondays at 5pm, anything frozen will get there by Friday.  So, when you are tired of making it all come together for the week, I come to the rescue with the Friday Night Meal!  But instead of doing a side dish this week, I worked with Jimmy Stovall from Corky's, to see what types of recipes his mother used to make for him.  He shared with me his favorite dessert from his childhood, and so in honor of Mother's Day, here is Mrs. Stovall's recipe:

Sue's Chocolate Eclair Cake

1 box of graham crackers

2 small boxes of vanilla instant pudding

3 cups of milk

1 cup of powdered sugar

8 oz whipped topping

2 cans of milk chocolate frosting (preferably at room temperature)

Simply mix the pudding, milk and sugar together, then fold in the whipped topping.

Then, grease a 9x11" pan.

Layer the graham crackers in the bottom of the pan, and then spread 1/2 pudding mix on top.  Follow that with another layer of graham crackers, and another layer of pudding mix. Finish it by putting one last layer of graham crackers on top, and frost it with the milk chocolate frosting.

Cut into squares!! SO GOOD!!!!!

Here are a couple of tips:

Store it in the fridge, and it's almost better the second day.  If you don't like whipped topping, you can substitute real fresh whipped cream in it's place.

One of the best things about this is that you don't need to wait to enjoy it! The kids will love it, and a big thank you to Sue for supplying the recipe! Happy Mother's Day!

Also, I have been working with the food buyers to try and get one item in every show at a truly fantastic value.  This one is from Kansas City Steak Company, and the price will only be good until the end of the day tomorrow! 12 sirloins for under $50!  If you want to check it out, click here.

Gold, Gold, Gold...

Greetings from California,

I thought that since May is Gold Month here at QVC, I would offer some styling tips on how to get the most out of your jewelry.  Most of my collectors at John Hardy love the fact that many of our designs incorporate sterling silver and 18K gold; the combination offers them the ability to wear their pieces every day.  Yet, when I would introduce our solid 18K designs, they were more hesitant about incorporating the pieces into their wardrobe.  I wondered if the problem was the initial investment or if it was an aesthetic issue.  Working with my collectors, I found out that most often they wanted to invest in the 18K design, but were not sure if they would wear the piece enough to justify the purchase.  Well, that’s where I come in!

As a stylist, I have spent years learning and working with the most amazing editors and designers.  What I have learned is that mixing and matching your precious metals is one of the easiest and most stylish ways to create a new look and fill in the holes in your jewelry wardrobe.  I’m sure you noticed that during the past several years, everything from the hardware on your handbag to the accents on your glasses feature more and more gold tones.  Because of all of the gold accents found in designs today, I think it’s important for my clients to be comfortable incorporating gold into their personal styles, which I have created a program at John Hardy called ‘Graduate to Gold.’

As gold is such an investment, many of my collectors only had a couple of key pieces that were all gold.  What they told me was that they weren’t comfortable incorporating the all gold pieces into their daily wardrobe as they felt it didn’t ‘match’ the silver pieces they owned.  So, I would have them bring in their favorite gold designs, and together we would mix and match the pieces with our John Hardy two-tone designs.  I would help them get out of their comfort zone where everything was ‘Matchy Matchy’ and help them create an updated look that was pulled together, made a statement, and was an expression of their personality.  Remember that this works just as well for those of you who only wear silver but find that with all the gold accents in your wardrobe you would like to start incorporating some gold tones into your jewelry collection.

Depending on your personal taste, I have highlighted some new JAI John Hardy key designs that I think can help you to ‘Graduate to Gold.’  Some of the designs below have a larger 14K gold look and some simply have delicate 14K gold accents.  All of them are gorgeous on their own but also pair beautifully with any of your all-gold designs as well.

I hope you have an amazing Mother’s Day weekend.  Please take a moment to visit and ‘like’ our JAI Jewelry Facebook page, to get an inside look into the world of JAI John Hardy Jewelry.

Safe Travels,
