The Love of My Life

You never know where or when you will meet the love of your life.

Forty years ago while shooting pool in the game room at college, I met the soon to be love of my life, Richard Graver. We laughed out loud together at parties, shared the same thoughts and values and enjoyed each other's company. Our love soon blossomed and we were engaged a year after college and married a year later.

On March 11th we will celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. How did the years fly by so quickly? Richard is my best friend, the love of my life, my confident, and the one I turn to for support and advice. We still laugh out loud and enjoy every moment together.

Our greatest joys and proudest accomplishments are our three wonderful children Michael, David, and Jaclyn. Both Rich and my children are the wind beneath my wings... They are my life line.

Happy Valentine's Day to the love of my life, Richard Graver. You mean the world to me.

xoxo,

Susan

Take A Tour of Roberta's Unique Gardens With Me!

Garden Season 2014 is in full swing!  That means the boys are back ...Roberta’s Unique Gardens Boys, that is!

Four generations and over 50 years!

Their greenhouses are only about an hour away from Indianapolis.  So, while I was home last May, I asked Eric if my family (all avid gardeners) and I could take a tour of Roberta’s.  He said, “Sure!  Come on down!” I took some pictures because I thought you might want to experience Roberta’s, too!

We (my mom, Dad, Sister Susie, Isabella & I) arrived mid-morning to a nice welcome from Eric and Mark, his Operations Manager.

First up - The seeds are where it all begins.

Isabella loved seeing all the plants, especially the “hen”!

These are “chicks” of the “hens & chicks” or sempervivum, which means “live forever”.

Close-up of the “hen” that Izzy is holding.

Look at the rich red snap dragon!  These come back every year as opposed to an annual that you find elsewhere.  And the flower actually snaps when you pop it!

Just one of the row of state-of-the-art greenhouses on the Roberta’s property.

I love this picture!  It shows the health & lush nature of their plants.  Believe it or not, this is the end of the season when nearly everything has shipped!

These are big, gorgeous roots that will become “Itoh Peonies”.  This is Kevin’s favorite plant we sell.  It’s a cross between your garden peony, tree peony and Tibetan peony.

Gratuitous shot!  Lol!  (Hens & Chicks that are growing a “cottony sweater”.)

We decided to jump into the semi that is waiting to bring you this year’s Roberta’s treasures!

After we left the grounds, we headed to Eric’s house to meet his family and have lunch.  And low and behold, who showed up?  Koort!

Needlesstosay, we had a great day at Roberta’s!!  I was completely impressed by the healthy, beautiful plants, the operation and the family atmosphere that exists after all these years.  Their mission has always been to bring you “Hard-To-Find, Easy-To-Grow” plants.  Four generations and fifty years later, Roberta’s is still going strong!   I’m sure their Mom, Roberta, would be proud to see her sons & grandsons taking such good care of her namesake!  A big thank you to Eric, his Team & his family for their Hoosier hospitality!

The Gluten Free Cookbook from America’s Test Kitchen is here!

For a year now, I have been eating gluten free. It was advised by my doctor and I always do what she says! Any time you have to re-learn one of your “fundamentals” it can be tough. I needed to re-learn how to eat for me. Where to start? Who can I ask? What on Earth can I eat? I learned a lot from Chef and blogger friends, researching on the internet, and trial-and-error. But it took a lot of time.

My good buddies at America’s Test Kitchen shared that they were working on a gluten free cookbook a little while back and I could not have been more excited.  I love their programs, their library of recipes, and I consider Julia Collin Davison an expert on kitchen, cooking, and baking knowledge. If THEY were writing a GF cookbook, it was going to be amazing.

Sure enough, it absolutely is. I have been lucky enough to gluten free cook using their recipes for the last couple of months and I am even more impressed than I thought I would be. You can count on ATK to be thorough, delicious and they always explain the “why” for what you’re doing. But here is the most important thing: THESE RECIPES ARE DELICIOUS. Everything I have tried (and I’ve made more than a dozen recipes from this book) so far are flavor-packed and crowd-pleasers! Thanks to their guidance I now make a FINE:

Gluten Free Blueberry Muffin (so packed with flavor, you miss NOTHING)…

Gluten Free Lasagna (better than ANY lasagna I have made in the past)…

And Gluten Free Raspberry Streusel Bars (I did not even know I could do it. They were gone in one day)!

Please know, you CAN do this. If you have been advised that you should try eating gluten free, it is not as hard as you may think. Save yourself the hassle I went through to learn about this way of eating and try this book.  It’ll help get you started and will help keep the variety in your eating routine as you get more familiar. Do you have a favorite gluten free recipe? I would love to hear about it! ~ @Mary QVC

Real Romance Begins at Home!

You know I’m all about any holiday that gives me an excuse to whip up a batch of something totally scrumptious. And Valentine’s Day is no exception. But you might be surprised what’s on my menu for the day…Scotch Hash!

What…You were expecting some kind of chocolate-covered decadence? Of course, I always celebrate the big day with something sweet, too. But here’s the scoop on why Scotch Hash ranks as the most romantic meal on record in my book.

When my mom was just a cute, little 12-going-on-13-year-old girl, she spent her summer at White Lake Covenanter Camp in Upstate New York. The first time she spotted one handsome, young 14-year-old boy named George across the crowded campground, she turned to her best friend, Diane, and said, “I’m going to marry that boy.”

Wedding Photo

(You can’t make this stuff up! Diane is still one of my mom’s best friends to this day, and she swears it’s true!)

You have to hand it to my mom. She knows exactly what she wants! And of course, my father, George, was just as smitten.  So, naturally, I grew up hearing stories about the childhood sweethearts that grew up to be best friends. Not just hearing the stories over and over, but seeing proof of their true love every day.

Tara's parents

Sometimes it was my parents humming or singing bits of the doo wop song “Little Star” by The Elegants. That was “their song” when they were first dating, and I will always think of it as their special little musical valentine.

But most often I saw evidence of their love at mealtime. I’ve said before that no matter how busy we were, my mom always made sure we sat down together for a meal. That’s what inspired me to create Temp-tations. In our home, dinnertime was always a special time, but some days, it was extra special. Like when my mom made my dad’s favorite dish…you guessed it, Scotch Hash.

My dad came from Scottish heritage, so he loved the classic dishes of Scotland. And while I was never a huge fan of steak and kidney pie while I was a kid, we all loved Scotch Hash…and I especially loved seeing the huge smile on my dad’s face whenever my mom brought his favorite meal to the table. The way to his heart definitely involved Scottish comfort food!

Food

There’s so much talk about romance this time of year. But for me, it’s not about champagne and roses and big fancy meals. It’s about celebrating with the people you love in the ways they love best.

That’s the most important thing I learned about love from my parents, growing up. And it’s a lesson I celebrate every Valentine’s Day. Even though my dad’s no longer with us, all it takes is one bite of warm, comforting Scotch Hash to remind me what true love is all about.

Here’s the recipe that kept my parents’ love going strong.

“Dad’s Favorite” Scotch Hash

Valentine's Day Love - Nester Style!

A very poor man lived with his wife. One day, his wife, who had very long hair asked him to buy her a comb for her hair to grow well and to be well-groomed. The man felt very sorry and said no. He explained that he did not even have enough money to fix the strap of his watch he had just broken. She did not insist on her request. The man went to work and passed by a watch shop, sold his damaged watch at a low price and went to buy a comb for his wife. He came home in the evening with the comb in his hand ready to give to his wife. He was surprised when he saw his wife with a very short hair cut. She had sold her hair and was holding a new watch band. Tears flowed simultaneously from their eyes, not for the futility of their actions, but for the reciprocity of their love. MORAL: To love is nothing, to be loved is something but to love and to be loved by the one you love, that is EVERYTHING. Never take love for granted.

BY: O. Henry

I am sure many of you are very familiar with the “Gift of the Magi” story by O. Henry.  I was recently looking on the internet and I came across this version and it made me remember something that happened to me and I wanted to share the story with you.

Years ago, when Chris and I were newly married, we would go to the Ocean City Maryland shore every year for vacation.  Chris had made a tradition of buying me a gold bracelet at the shore each and every year.  We were just starting out so Chris would save all year and set aside that money for that special gift – and it really meant a lot to me.  It was always a high point of our vacation to go “bracelet shopping”!

One year, after a lot of searching,  we had found the perfect bracelet and we were walking up to the register and getting ready to pay for it , when out of the blue.....my husband – who barely notices jewelry – was stopped in his tracks by a watch in the jewelry case. He said, “Oh Antonella… look, they have that watch I like.”  I was so shocked – I couldn’t answer (you know if I am at a loss for words – it was a BIG SHOCK!!  {#emotions_dlg.w00t}) We asked the owner if Chris could try it on. At that point, I saw something soooo familiar. You know what I'm talking about...that feeling you get when you find "that" piece of jewelry, the one that rocks your world. It's that face I always make....... Chris was making "The Face".  His eyes twinkled, a sweet smile spread across his face, his head tilted to the right, in admiration of the piece on his wrist. The watch was the exact same price as the bracelet I had already picked out - $150.  Chris never spends any money on himself, it's always for me and now for me and the kids. He is very selfless and would give the shirt, shoes and trousers off his back to a stranger. That's one of the many reasons I love him (oh, and his blue eyes and biceps melt me too. {#emotions_dlg.blush} Lol). Back to the story...  I said we would get the watch instead.  He said absolutely not – that he saved that money all year for my gift. We argued back and forth in front of the owner for quite a while. Finally, Chris handed the owner the watch and told him to put it away and ring up my bracelet. Grrrrr, I hate losing a fight.  As the owner and I walked up to the register, I looked over my shoulder and watched Chris gazing through the glass at the watch. I yelled back, “OK Chris – I am getting my bracelet, right?”  and sweet Chris replied “Definitely!”  I slid the bracelet to the owner and whispered  “You ring up that watch and put this bracelet away.” I pointed to the big red sign that read "All Sales Final" and very insistently said, "No matter what, you stick to that!"  He was so stunned that he just stood there.  Finally, he said all the people that come into his store were always “Me, Me, Me!” when their spouse was offering to buy them something.  In all his years, he had never seen someone turn it down and turn it around. He said he was so moved - that he gave us ½ price on the bracelet and we were able to buy the watch AND the bracelet.  We didn’t eat very much for the rest of the vacation because we were so broke – but it couldn’t have been more worth it!  I still have - and wear my bracelet to this day  - and here it is:

Chris wore that watch until he wore it out but here is what it looked like:

To borrow from the story above :  “To love is nothing, to be loved is something but to love and to be loved by the one you love, THAT is EVERYTHING.”

We are still each other’s Valentines to this day…. Have a wonderful St. Valentine’s Day!

Valentine's Day for Chocolate Lovers

When I think of Valentine’s Day, I immediately think of one thing: chocolate. I can’t help it! I am a chocolate lover, and I’ll take it in just about any incarnation. Today on Q In magazine, we discussed how to pair wine and chocolate like a pro for an extra sweet treat this Valentine’s Day, but what about some more unexpected ways to work chocolate into your diet? Here are some ideas I’m planning on making to treat myself, please share any recipes you have in the comments!

If you’ve never tried Mexican Mole sauce, now is the time! Make this simple recipe that incorporates chocolate and pour over chicken breasts, for voila! a chocolatey treat that can be served as a main:

Ingredients:

Ground black pepper

2 tablespoons of olive oil

2 tablespoons of mild chili powder

2 tablespoons of ground cumin

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

1½ ounces of unsweetened chocolate

4 cans of stewed tomatoes

Directions:

Combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil with chili powder, cumin and cinnamon in a pot over medium to low heat. Add black pepper to taste. Stir until blackened about 6 to 8 minutes. Reduce heat to low and stir in chocolate until melted. When chocolate is completely melted, add stewed tomatoes and bring to a boil. Cook for ten minutes then pour over a protein. I recommend chicken for a delicious treat!

Looking for a romantic beverage alternative to wine? Just pour a rich chocolate liqueur into your favorite martini or coffee drink or hot chocolate (for extra decadence!)

Don’t forget to pick out something for your loved ones, such as this glorious assortment of cakes and treats. Whatever form it comes in, I can’t get enough chocolate and there’s never a better excuse to indulge than Valentine’s Day!

Be Your Own Interior Decorator - Understanding the Rule of Three

$

You know the saying two’s company, three’s a crowd? That may be true in dating. But it couldn’t be more wrong when it comes to design. Pay attention the next time you page through a decorative catalog or walk through your favorite home store. Chances are, you’ll find three vases grouped on a coffee table, three shelves hanging on a wall, or three pictures displayed in some way. Why? The effect creates harmony and cohesion. It invites the eye to be drawn to a focal point, which is comfortable for the admirer and ultimately makes your décor feel comfortable.

This concept of cohesion also works with groups of five, seven, or any odd number, because you’ll always get that focal point. My DIY project today is a great example. I think we all could use extra storage jars for the garage, home office, kitchen, craft corner, or kids’ rooms….the list goes on. And you can make these canisters from your trash!

What you see there are empty cans—once filled with veggies, chips, and coffee—covered with colorful scrapbook paper. To really enforce a sense of cohesion, I chose all dotted paper. Then, I just cut it to fit, and covered the cans. I used a glue stick to secure the paper. You can use any kind of paper or even fabric. Just make sure the adhesive you use choose doesn’t bleed through the material.

See how we grouped them? There are five cans in the photo. Then, we used some other decorative accents to add interest to the scene. You may also notice the cans are not all the same shape and size. Varying heights and sizes add even more visual appeal and can make any even more memorable.

Now, go have some fun! Treat yourself to some new decorative pieces. Go back and rearrange some of the canvas wall art you created last month. And, take a good look at your existing décor…chances are, you have the pieces to give your home that “professional” touch.

Have a VERY Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! If you haven't gotten anything for your sweetie yet, check out my blog last week. And mark your calendars—there’s a You’re Home with Jill next Tuesday at 1pm ET. Look for a new blog coming this Monday.

From my home to yours,
—Jill

Dream BIG and don’t give up!

It’s so funny.   American Dreamers sounds like such a big title! When I hear it, I think…Thomas Edison, JFK, even Oprah! People whose dreams and accomplishments we can’t imagine life without.

I certainly never started out trying to become an American Dreamer. I was just a little girl hanging out underfoot in the kitchen while my mom bustled around trying to make great dinners for her busy family. But somewhere along the line, as I watched my mom work so hard, and I watched all those dishes pile up in the sink (and guess whose job it was to clean them…Mine!), maybe a seed was planted; dream seed.

Of course, it took a long time for that seed to blossom into temp-tations. It wasn’t until many, many years later, when I was visiting a handcrafted stoneware factory, that I started thinking about how much something like this would have helped my mom. Not only was it beautiful, but it was unbelievably practical and versatile.

Even then, it wasn’t like this Eureka moment or lightning bolt of inspiration. More like this pesky little idea that simply would not go away. Until one day, I actually sat down on the floor of my kitchen with my mom, Gail, and we pulled out all the different dishes we used for prepping, cooking, serving and storing.

Seeing that mountain of kitchenware – so like the mountain that piled up in the sink when I was little – that’s what finally convinced me I was onto something. If I could offer every home cook the chance to spend more time with family and less time dealing with dirty dishes…well, who wouldn’t love that?

Having the idea was one thing just the beginning for me. Turning it into something real…that was much harder than I ever dreamed it would be.

I was blessed with a lot of support along the way – both personally and professionally. But it wasn’t always easy. As a designer, I put so much of myself into every pattern. So it’s hard not to feel personally attached. Early on, I needed to accept that if a piece isn’t well received, it’s not a personal reflection on me. That was a tough, but important lesson.

Building a business is a huge undertaking that requires a lot of sacrifice.  In the beginning that meant a lot of time away from my family and my friends. And relationships in my life definitely suffered because of that. On the positive side, that effort helped me find a whole new family – my temp-tationistas!

In many ways, I am the classic example of no work/life balance. But I also have something bigger driving me.  I can’t explain the drive, the pull of this brand – it’s infectious not only to the collectors but for me as a designer.  Which is really great, because no matter how much I put in, I always feel like I’m getting even more back.  That’s what keeps me going.

The biggest lesson I have learned along my journey is that the only true measure of failure is to quit. You need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going. Because tomorrow is another day, with plenty of opportunities to shine. And if you give up, you’ll never have the chance to find that out.

So, does temp-tations make me an American Dreamer? I’d say it’s the path that brought me here that does.   Because no dream starts out with the perfect model. They start with the pesky little idea that just won’t leave you alone. Having the courage and determination to pursue them. That’s what makes the difference.

The Big Move from Australia to the USA

$

This April, it will be 2 years since I have lived here in the United States.  The decision to move here was one that was not made easily.  I was leaving a job that I loved (as head of the Orthaheel and Scholl Footwear business in Australia and New Zealand); I was leaving my family, my close friends and my relationship at the time.   And I was moving to another country, on the other side of the world, where I didn’t know a soul.  It would be fair to say that it was a decision that put me well outside my comfort zone.

I’ve been lucky enough to have known and worked with many of the team at Vionic Group for a number of years – in fact I am proud to say that some of my dearest friends are the people who I work with (Steve Mabb and I have worked together and have been great mates since 1998).  From a work point of view, that made the decision to come over a lot easier.  The culture at Vionic Group is one of support, and corporately and personally, they did everything within their power to make the transition as easy as possible, and make me feel welcomed.

There were many challenges in getting settled into the East Coast.   Everything from finding a place to live or setting up a bank account to knowing the best place to get a pizza or where the nearest drycleaners are.  Moving to any new place can present these types of challenges, but doing it in a new country takes it to a whole new level.  This is where I was so thankful to my new family – the people who I am lucky to work with everyday.  As soon as I walked through the doors at QVC, I was made to feel welcome in an instant.

The other guests, the studio team, the hosts, the buyers, the models, and the sales team – everyone was genuinely concerned with how I was settling in and all offered any assistance they could to help me out whenever it was needed.  I must say that I have also been lucky enough to have met some great people outside of the QVC building, who have also gone above and beyond to make me feel welcome; people who I am very proud to call my friends.

It is hard being away from my family in Australia. Although I lived in another state, I still knew they were only a 2 hour flight away.  What I miss the most is missing out on some of the special occasions.  Whilst I always get home for the big events (I was in Australia in early November to celebrate my Mum and Dad’s 50th wedding anniversary),  I miss out on the little things – birthdays of my nieces and nephews (there are 12 of them), catching up with my 2 big brothers for a boys weekend, sitting down with my dad to watch the mighty Wallabies (that’s the Australian rugby team) play, or just having lunch with mum and listening to all the stories of what the grandkids have been up to.  Whilst these are certainly things that I miss, I must say that being so far away has shown me that it’s more about the quality time you get to spend with the people you love.  Things like Skyping or even just being in email/text message contact means that I’m kept in the loop and still have that all important connection. Seeing pictures of the birthday parties and any other fun times that they’re all having back there makes me feel included.  I also still enjoy the occasional care package of Vegemite being sent my way.

Living here in the USA has been a great experience, and one that I can only hope continues. There are many more things that I want to see and do here. I have my bucket list and I’ll hopefully get a chance to tick some more adventures off it over the next 12 months. I see myself as being very lucky, because now I have a whole new family. The best example I can give on how caring people have been can be best explained over the recent holidays. Everyone I knew was so genuinely concerned as to where I was going to be for Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year. So many people invited me over for lunch or dinner.  I can honestly say that it was the most humbling feeling I have felt. However, it’s this kind of openness, these kinds of gestures that make me love living here so much.  There has not been a day since I have been here where I have had a negative experience with anyone.  There has not been one day in the last 2 years that I have ever regretted taking up the opportunity to work here in the USA.   If you asked me 5 years ago where I’d be today, I can tell you that living in the states wouldn’t have been on the radar.  However, if you ask me now where I’d like to be in 5 years, it would be a very different answer.  Australia will always be my home, but I am thankful everyday for the people I have met here, because I’ve been made to feel at home here in the USA too.

Fortunate to be Living the American Dream

$

I am so fortunate to be living an “American Dream”.  I am surrounded by people I love and my work gives me great joy and satisfaction.

Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was preparing for this career from my early years as a child.  I realize now that I gained strengths through both my good and difficult experiences. Those old clichés about “If it doesn’t kill you, it can make you stronger” and “there is no such thing as a failure just a learning experience”, are so true.  I know that my experiences can also provide guidance and instill hope in other “dreamers”.

Upon graduation from college with a double major in Art and Psychology, my intention was to become an Art Therapist. Funny how life takes a turn...Audrey Graver (my soon to be mother-in-law), suggested I might enjoy the fashion industry where I could apply my artistic talent, joy of people and passion for fashion. I thought it might be a good idea. So, I went to the heart of the garment center... 1407 Broadway, NY, NY. Perhaps a bit unconventional, I asked the elevator operator if he had heard of any jobs available in the building.  Lo and behold, he directed me to a new company that was looking for help. I started at the ground level. Answering phones and being a  “schlepper” were two of my major responsibilities. Nevertheless, I was so happy to be in an environment where I could learn.  I immediately fell in love with the fast pace and contagious energy of the business. This was my introduction to the fashion industry!

A few months later, during a big storm, I was delivering a garment to another company. Appearing at their office with packages in hand, and looking like a drowned rat, I engaged in a delightful conversation. To my great surprise, I was asked to join this fast growing pant manufacturer. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!  I stayed with this company for many years and took every advantage to learn as much as I could. I worked with buyers/merchandisers of major department and specialty stores and especially loved designing and merchandising.

After quite a few years and embolden with my new knowledge, I dreamt about designing, marketing, and producing my own line of fashion under my name, Susan Graver Style.  The idea of owning my own business seemed perfect for me. I had the support of my buyers. I could design my own line from my own point of view. But there was also an ulterior motive... My son Michael was one year old and I fantasized about the prospect of not answering to a boss and coming and going as I pleased. I took the leap of faith.

Yes, there are both pros and cons of being in your own business. But they are not all exactly as I fantasized. When you are in your own business, you are on the job 24/7. And yes, you don’t have a boss to answer to but as your own boss you might be your own harshest critic. You also have a world of customers, buyers, staff, lenders, etc. depending on you. I remember being in the hospital bed with a color chart the day David, my second son was born, to choose the color palate for my upcoming collection.  I was back to the office 3 weeks later, barely physically or mentally ready. Then my third child, Jaclyn came along. We say, "that was the straw that broke the camel's back”. With 3 children now, and running my own business, I was ready to throw in the towel. I was totally stressed and pulled in every direction.

With my husband Richard by my side, we figured ways to manage the business and the children. Rather than give up, I remember telling myself that my family was all that matters... If my designs are not produced on time, it's not the end of the world. With my new relaxed attitude, my stress was reduced and it all came together!  I even met my deadlines. My business continued to grow and my fashions were seen in major department stores.

Twenty-five years ago a new and unknown retailer walked into my showroom, QVC. Before I knew what was happening, I was invited to QVC Studios to make a guest appearance. I thought I'd be on for 5 minutes, but was actually on air for an hour... Totally unprepared, it was one of the biggest hours at QVC!   Shortly thereafter, Audrey and I were asked to design exclusively for QVC.  I was so proud to be the first designer to have a weekly show and design exclusively for QVC.

Initially, I was spellbound by the allure of the fashion industry and the artistic outlet it provided me.  However, in reality, the greatest satisfaction I have derived from this journey is the connection I have made with women. Through QVC ‘s brilliant vision, the magic of television, the internet and social media, I have had the opportunity to connect with my customers in a way never have thought possible in prior generations.   My “customers” feel more like “friends” and I am so grateful for them. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being part of your lives.

It's funny how we never know where our paths will lead us.

My Family, My Inspiration

My parents came to this country because they wanted their yet unborn children to grow up in the greatest country in the world. They came with no knowledge of English, no money and no prospects. They did so for the future of their family. They taught me to believe in myself and like them, to pursue my dreams, no matter the obstacles.  My mother was a couturiere and as a small child I sat at her side while she made dresses. She taught me the importance of style and artistry. While she worked, I played with her jewelry, making a necklace into a belt, stacking her bracelets and combining earring tops and bottoms in different ways.  She would critique my work and suggest alternate ways of creating the designs.  I always knew I would be a jewelry designer and it was my parents’ courage that gave me the confidence and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve that goal.

Like you would expect, the journey was very tough. Long design nights and plenty of rejection. But the example of my parents and their belief in themselves provided the passion and inspiration that drove me.   I also remember the highlights such as opening my own Madison Avenue boutique and designing the pin that first lady Hillary Clinton wore to her husband’s inauguration. These incredible milestones made any difficulties pale by comparison. I can still remember walking down Madison Avenue and seeing someone in my jewelry for the first time. I can almost feel the excitement and exhilaration even now!

As many women know, caring for a family while starting a career can be challenging.  Somehow everything got done, but with three young boys, every day was packed. I often think about the technological conveniences we take for granted today such as cell phones, email and texting. That certainly would have made my balancing act a little easier!  Jewelry design was, and still is my passion. It is the only thing I have ever wanted to do. Stopping, giving up, or doing something else was simply never an option.

My mother inspired me and still does. She was a couturiere with a strong sense of family and self, and she had a creative flair that I believe I was lucky enough to inherit. From the very beginning she could see that I was captivated by the treasures in her jewelry box and she encouraged me to express my individuality through jewelry design.

I am so grateful for the unwavering support of my family. My husband encouraged me to focus on success, and to consider no other possible outcome. My sons supported me even before they quite understood what I was doing. I remember them as children, all sitting on my bed, helping pack up deliveries!  Their love and support re-energized me every day.

Hi My Loves! Makeup has always been my dream and I wanted to share with you QVC Mallynistas just how important it is to dream and go after your dreams each and every day!

How did your brand come to be?

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved makeup. I even sometimes say I was born wearing makeup! I was a celebrity makeup artist for years, traveling everywhere with some of the biggest A-list celebrities. I found myself making and mixing products to meet the demands of my clients and the looks that I wanted to create. At that time, I knew I wanted to eventually develop my own product line!

What was it like starting out in the very beginning of your journey?

Of course, any new journey you embark on is going to bring challenges, but I always find that having a positive energy and surrounding myself with people who have positive attitudes is the best key to achieving your accomplishments. I always knew that I wanted to launch my product line on QVC as I felt it was the only channel that would really let me speak directly to my consumers, my "Mallynistas."

What and who inspired your dream?

My parents were both doctors and I originally went to school to study medicine, but my passion and love for makeup was always there. My mom was a huge inspiration in my life, she was fashion forward and so beautiful. When I told my father I wanted to become a makeup artist, he was (and still is) so supportive in helping my dreams come true, which I am so grateful for!

Did you have someone special who helped you get to where you are?

Yes! My husband Phil has been someone very special in my life who has helped me get to where I am today. People always ask me what it's like to work together and be married and I always say, for us, it just works! We help each other every step along the way and I am so blessed to have him and our three beautiful children to inspire me every day.

What is your best advice for someone who wants to be as famous as you someday?

Surround yourself with people whose only mission in life is to see you succeed, and who know enough not to get between you and the camera.

How does it feel to be the biggest star of Muppets Most Wanted?

I wouldn’t say I was the biggest star, but I certainly am the most admired, talented, famous and beloved star of Muppets Most Wanted, opening in theatres nationwide on March 21, 2014

What’s the best part of being a famous movie star?

Having a publicist who answers most of these questions for me.  Oh, and of course, moi’s fans. I adore you all!

Secret to being a fashion icon?

Don’t worry about inner beauty, concentrate on the outside—that’s what people look at first.

Can’t-leave-home-without beauty product?

A mirror. Without that, what’s the point of all the other stuff, n’est ce pas?!

If you could trade lives with ANOTHER ACTOR who would it be?

Barbra Streisand. I’ve always wanted to do a Farewell Tour and she seems to do them every couple of years. Sounds like fun!

Celebrity crush?

Besides Kermie? I tend to gravitate towards people who are comfortable sharing the spotlight with moi—but not the check for dinner

Describe your perfect date night

A frog. A box of chocolate. A blackout.

Favorite quote

I think it was the legendary Coco Chanel who said: “I don’t care what you think about me, I don’t think about you at all.”  It’s very similar to my own motto: “I don’t care what you think about me, as long as you think about me and go see my new movie Muppets Most Wanted, opening in theatres nationwide on March 21, 2014”

Beauty icon

Audrey Hepburn and Katherine Hepburn. Something about those Hepburns; when it comes to beauty, they really cook.

Tell us—do blondes really have more fun?

Real, dyed or extensions?   In any case, the answer is “yes” – unless it happens to be a day I’ve decided to go ginger.

What’s your latest iTunes download?/music?

In this order: Muppet soundtracks, romantic ballads, and “Songs to Woo Frogs By”: The Box Set

Favorite movie?

I would say Muppets Most Wanted but that sounds too self-serving. But it is fabulous and you must see it.  Otherwise, I adore romantic comedies where the pig gets the frog .

Red Carpet mantra

My go-to mantra is: Hey, buddy! Get out of my key light.

I never leave home without my _____

My sense of style and breath mints.

Three words to describe me are:

Talented, beautiful, humble

Super power you wish you possessed

I am a super power. I don’t need one.

Proudest moment

Giving Tina Fey career advice. It was moi who told her to stick to comedy and forget catering. (Though I must say, she does make a fabulous tuna casserole.).

Guilty pleasures:

If it’s a pleasure, I don’t feel guilty about it.

Woman I admire most

Any woman who goes after her dream and never gives up. And I’m not just talking about famous people; I mean every woman who makes the effort no matter what others tell her. I know what that’s like. Hard to believe now, but when I got started some people thought I wouldn’t succeed.  To which I say “HA!”

How I came to be

I started sewing in order to make puppets. I had a huge puppet theatre in the garage and it was the center of my world. Then I began obsessively thinking about clothes because I was raised in a home with two pretty sisters and a fashion-obsessed mother who thought a lot about clothes. It was one of the main subjects in the home.

What it was like starting out in the very beginning of my journey

At the very beginning it was not scary. I never thought of what there was to lose because it wasn't about achievement as much as it was about loving the work. I did everything. I painted the studio, built the cutting tables, I sketched and draped and made patterns and sewed. I even serviced the sewing machines! I never stopped working ever. I liked it better than everything else.

Struggles along the way

My struggles were mainly focused on figuring out production and distribution. I really only cared about creating an ORIGINAL look; a distinctive American brand.

Did I ever feel like giving up?

I never felt like giving up because what I did kept changing and morphing. I never had a minute to think about failure!

Who inspired my dream?

I think my dream was inspired by the reportage of YSL when I was a kid looking at the pages of WWD.  Those magical collections.  The Russian peasant collection.  The Chinese collection, etc.   Also Geoffrey Beene was a big favorite of mine.

Someone special that helped me get to where I am

A woman named Ellie Fishman who was the foremost childrens wear designer in the country. She worked across the hall from my Dad's childrens wear showroom. She met with me when I was 13 and looked at my sketches and gave me advice including the priceless advice to go to Parsons.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness – the Story of one of your faces of IT Cosmetics Jacqueline”

That’s the American Dream, what makes this country amazing.  “Pursuit of Happiness” is the phrase I love the most – it looks different for every person and how you pursue your happiness can involve some risk.  Dreams are not always right there within our grasp.  We have to reach for them, strive for them, and take that leap of faith.  I’ve shared my story with all of you over the past four years but for this blog, I’ve asked another face of IT Cosmetics you are familiar with (you see her on air at QVC alongside me) Jacqueline to share her story, as I hope it inspires you to dream your dream!  She’s been beside me and part of IT Cosmetics from the very beginning.  And when it comes to “The Pursuit of Happiness”, Jacqueline definitely took a personal leap of faith…when she joined IT Cosmetics, because she believed in taking a chance with me to start a company that aims to change the lives of every woman who tries our products, to not only solve beauty problems in a new and innovative way, but to give back, to make a difference, and to commit to not launching a product unless we believe it is truly life changing. This was a big, bold dream we were about to embark upon!  Starting a company, or taking a career risk to join a new one is truly risky, but that is one of the best parts of living in the USA, we can dare to dream! I have, and Jacqueline has…and I hope you enjoy her story. XOXO Jamie

I started working for IT Cosmetics in January of 2009, 5 years ago.  It was a really exciting time professionally and personally.  I was employee #3 at a start-up company I believed in and I was pregnant with my first child.  Looking back, it sounds crazy – instead of joining a team that was established with a clear foothold in the cosmetics world, I jumped on board with a brand that was in its infancy, because I truly believed in IT. But honestly it was a bit scary to dream so big and take a risk on something I believed in that couldn’t necessarily offer me long-term security at the time, especially since I was pregnant!

My beautiful son Julian was born in July of 2009, around the same time as Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer came into the beauty world.  It was poetic timing- a product made to cover the darkest of under eye circles and me discovering just how little babies actually sleep at night!  Bye Bye Under Eye changed my life at the same time my sweet son did. It’s wonderfully terrifying being a new mom.  Here was this tiny person who had become my world…and I was working so hard at a company that wasn’t making a profit yet!  While sometimes my head questioned if I was making the best decision as a mother with someone to care for, my heart and my husband supported what I was doing.  We knew that IT Cosmetics was more than a start-up…it was a company that was going to change the lives of women everywhere!

The biggest, hardest decision my family and I made was to move from Los Angeles to the East Coast where IT Cosmetics was relocating in order to grow.  On New Year’s Eve of 2010, my husband Eric and I toasted the upcoming 2011 with Julian asleep on my lap as we flew on the redeye from our home, our family, our friends, and moved to New York.  Everything we owned was in a moving truck and we were starting a new life with IT Cosmetics, closer to QVC in West Chester, PA.  It was so hard to leave California, the only home Eric had ever known, but we knew it was the right move for us.  We were pursuing our happiness! We were taking a risk and dreaming big!            (Photograph: Jacqueline, Julian, Eric)

Five years ago, I hoped that the reward of the great risk I was taking at IT Cosmetics would be worth it.  And it absolutely has been!  I am part of something bigger than myself, part of something special.  IT Cosmetics isn’t just makeup, it isn’t just a cosmetic line.  Inspiring confidence and self-love by solving woman’s beauty problems is my passion and fuels me every day. I now start my mornings off by seeing my beautiful inspiring son, and then spend my days inspired by all of the things we’re doing at IT Cosmetics and most importantly by all of you! Hearing from you, from our IT Girls online through Facebook, InstaGram, and Twitter– it’s amazing to share in your stories!  And I am so honored to share our products with you live on QVC, I am so passionate about them because I know first hand how they've changed my life and the lives of all of the women I know. I am also so passionate about the integrity of IT, what an honor I get to be part of this! I took a risk, but am truly living the American dream. I hope my story in some small way inspires you as well!

Take risks.  Chase your dreams.  Enjoy the ride!

IT is the American Dream!

XOXO

The Early Days…

I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. I was raised by two of the hardest working parents I’ve ever known, and both of them were the children of parents who survived World War II and immigrated to Australia. My mother is a dentist working in rural areas of Australia on people who can’t afford health care. My father has been an entrepreneur in the making from the age of 13. He worked from the bottom-up to support a family of 7 and I grew up really admiring how hard he worked for all of us. He is the strongest and most inspirational person in my life and has given me the strength I need to survive, understand business and believe that anything is possible.

Me and my Dad, my biggest inspiration

Not your average upbringing…

When I wasn’t in school or in one of the many co-curricular activities including painting, life drawing, ceramics and beading to name a few, I was traveling at age of 8 with my father who worked all over Asia and taught me the cultures in different countries while teaching me the many ins and outs of the importing business. By age 13 I had saved up enough money from the ice cream store I was working at on weekends, to buy the Adobe Suite, a computer aided design-program, which designers use to do everything from graphic design to prints and more. I taught myself how to use the program and started to design creative packaging ideas for the products my dad was selling. I was addicted and loved helping to grow the family business and the challenge of creating. From age 15 I spent all my spare time from school working as the in-house graphic designer for Gift Imports while traveling to Asia 4-6 times a year as an assistant buyer for my fathers business.

While I had the business education from my father, my grandparents included two jewelers and a seamstress, so I guess it’s safe to say that the fashion and accessory industry is in the blood!

I have always been hands on. This image was taken at the Magic Tradeshow in Las Vegas where I was sponsored by American Express to design and make a bag to a live audience at the show.

Me with my girls – My sisters Jade, Katie and Tammi and my mother Linda. My family are what drives me the most.

Nothing comes easy…

After graduating high school I was accepted into the Royal Melbourne Institute for Technology where I studied Industrial Design. I majored in design ergonomics and engineering. This included many forms of design and technologies really focusing on products that were not only aesthetically pleasing but products that addressed issues in the world that were in need of creative solutions.

Towards the end of my course, I still felt that I hadn't found my true love, what I really wanted to do in life. At that time, the TV phenomenon ‘Project Runway’ had aired in Australia and I was determined to study at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. I spent the next 5 months establishing a connection with the school so that I could apply. After a grueling application process I couldn't believe it, I was accepted. It was a dream come true and I had two weeks to pack up my life and move to New York City. The hardest part was leaving my family and moving to a new Country on the other side of the world where I didn’t know a single soul, but I knew this was my chance, my one time opportunity to make something of myself, give it my all to make it in the big city, the land of opportunity and make my family proud.

Pushing through the hardest of times…

I landed in the big city, 20 years old, my life in my suitcase and in the middle of winter I moved right into a tiny room in the financial district with two other girls that I had met that day. It was the coldest and loneliest I had ever been. I didn’t let that stop me, the heartbeat of the city was viral, I knew that this was make-or-break and I had to fight for what I wanted.

The first few weeks were the hardest. Parson’s unlike most other colleges is one of the most competitive and cut -throat forms of design training in the world. You are up against some of the most talented and competitive individuals on earth. Every day that I pushed through the many sleepless nights made me stronger. Unlike some of my peers, as an international student, my place was not guaranteed and I had to keep up a 3.8 GPA in order to stay at Parsons. I knew that I had to make the most of every second I had in New York City as I needed to secure a top job upon graduation in order to be able to afford to stay in America.

Building the Strength to survive…

I knew that I had to find a way to stand out. I was determined to become the strongest in my field. I fell in love with the fashion industry and found that the combination of my fashion design and product design expertise made accessories design passion and my strength. I spent every second I wasn’t studying interning, apprenticing and competing in jewelry, handbag and shoe design. Over those three years I interned and designed for brands such as Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, Alexander McQueen, Sass & Bide, Jill Stuart and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week to name a few. I also apprenticed for a couple of years at the House of Couture being trained by some of the best in the industry. I was a three-time finalist and two-time winner of The Independent Handbag Designer Awards and was sponsored by American Express, Swarovski and the Singapore Government to showcase my designs at various fashion shows and events.

Me with my Swarovski award winning bag from the 2012 InStyle Independent Handbag Designer Awards.

These experiences were life changing for me and I will forever be grateful to the teachers and mentors who believed in me guided me along the way. There was one lady in particular who saw something in me and mentored me throughout my journey and who helped me push through the hardest of times, Helene. She was in charge of recruiting talent for Liz Claiborne and we met when I came in to intern for Isaac Mizrahi couture shoes. She helped me to realize that the people in life you should cherish most are those who are there for you and stand by you during the hardest of times.

Helene, my mentor and life long friend

Started at the bottom and now I’m here…

Upon graduating I was recruited by companies such as Vince Camuto and Li & Fung, where I met Sean, my business partner and now husband-to-be. Sean believed in my vision and passion to create an accessory brand that focused on designing and making leather handbags, footwear and accessories that were both fashionable, functional and high quality without being over-priced. Sean’s incredibly strong work ethic immediately appealed to me, and together we made the bold move to break away and start our own business. I took on the role of creative director, while Sean administered all business and finance sectors of the brand.

I began by designing my first collection on the floor of our New York City apartment. Needless to say, it was quite the mess! We met various financial investors to help us to make our dream come to life, we had finally found the perfect partner and in November 2012, the Aimee Kestenberg Collection was born.

My Family & Inspirations (Judith Ripka's Story)
